View Full Version : Ridiculous in decision about sofa in TV room

We have a small TV room that is ready for furniture. I want it to have an upholstered piece of furniture that can sleep one person. No daybed. Those are not comfortable for watching tv.
It doesn’t have to be a sofa bed that pulls out from a sofa. It could be an actual sofa that is 65-70” inches long. I myself do not mind sleeping on the sofa.
I would like something stylish, but that seems impossible in sleeper sofas. So maybe I should get a regular sofa with some style and just assume that myself or whoever is going to stay overnight on it won’t hate sleeping on it.
In this purchase, I’m also picky about color so not every sofa on the market will fit my color scheme. I’m not going to buy an expensive sofa because this is a small room, small sofa needed, nothing fancy so it needs to be under $3000.
I am stupidly stuck on this purchase, and I don’t know why. Usually I spend a lot of time researching upholstered pieces, and then I go forward and buy them, and never look back.
do you all have any thoughts about this dilemma.?

I agree that traditional sleeper sofas are usually very uncomfortable.
We used to have a sofa that had very comfortable cushions, and loose back cushions, so they could be removed. When they were removed, the sofa was wide to sleep on and it was very comfortable. My dog especially loved it, but it was suitable for humans, trust me.
Here is a sofa my daughter bought for a spare room she has on a floor that separates her from the rest of the family (3 y.o. son and her dh). She fixed this room up as her "resting room" for when she needs peace and quiet to recover from chemo. The sofa she chose was this one, and it's really comfortable, although I'm guessing it's not your style. But it is versatile and cheap and very easy to turn into a bed.

I appreciate you saying sleeping on a sofa, one that has removable pillows isn’t bad. That is sort of how I am leaning. I sleep on the sofa at our condo when DH stay there because the bed is a single bed. I even sleep on the sofa with a 65 pound dog and it’s still not bad.

What about a futon?
I dont think DH finds futons comfortable for tv watching and I think they are unattractive. But thanks!
I’ve been dithering over something MCM or a huge stately Chesterfield for my TV room for about 2 years now. I feel your pain.

I like Chesterfields and think they’re handsome, but anything with button tufting is a no in our house because cat hair accumulates around the buttons. Been there done that, won’t ever do that again.

The maybe-reasonable supplier I have looked at (Rising Tide, https://therisingtide.com/collections/master-chesterfield-collection-sofas-headboards ) offers both button-tufted seats and more pillow-style, though the arms and back of both are tufted. Does the fur only collect on the seating surface, mostly?
I never would have thought of that issue! My Bloodhound sheds a Pomeranian-sized mound of undercoat a day, it seems.

I think that's actually quite cute, although limited color options and the sides just beg to be destroyed by cat claws!

I also like this one a lot and need the same sort of sofa in my living room so that if the power fails, we can sleep in there in front of the woodstove.
But four years here and still getting by on two wooden rocking chairs, so doubtful I will actually do something about this.
I've never understood how to sleep on a Chesterfield because of those arms--it would have to be longer than your body, right?

What is MCM? (man cave madness?)
I have stated before, that I was not a big couch person after having to move my furniture myself. That makes a difference in what you look for, as ones I could generally move myself are junk.
Also, as I have learned, I like to be able to adapt a room to different needs, after seeing how the family takes up space at holidays, etc. (and room layout plays a part on multiple levels).
There are some tables made by a company called Meco Stakmore, that I thought would be either good entry (weird space) or couch console tables, that could be used as a dining room table for family dinners.
I expect to have at least space for one lift chair (between myself and my father now) and there are quite a few chairs that can turn into beds, but the ones I am/would be leaning towards if I beat this cancer are Vonanda sofa bed plus. As ottoman's, they could be used like bench seating for the table/thanksgiving dinners, or I could turn them in the room to face the tv (basically the room is meant for conversation with the way the old couch from Steve is, or chair for watching tv).
Sorry, I am no help, I just am too used to being my own mover.

TMS: MCM is Mid Century Modern.

with my last piece of button back furniture, it was the back of the unit that accumulated the cat here. If the fabric is leather, it might not be so attractive to collecting cat hair, and it also depends on how light and floaty the pet here is.
I do not have curtains or drapes in my home due to floating cat hair. I found cat hair to be more of a problem than Dog hair.
Now I am going to see Man Cave Madness everytime I see Midcentury Modern!

For the moment I have abandoned buying this piece of furniture. It’s just too complicated. I don’t know why I’m having so much trouble but I am having trouble so let’s stop for a while.
This week I bought an old rug instead. I didn’t have to think too hard about that, just measuring, looked through eBay for a couple of days and Bam bought the rug from Turkey.

I’m currently hung up on the logistics of getting the old sofa out, and the new sofa in, which will require cutting down a few trees and rebuilding a trail. With some luck I’ll get this done this holiday weekend.

This somehow reminds me of the sofa situation from Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency.
