View Full Version : DeSantis: making childhood diseases come back in Florida

Hooray! No vaccines needed for children anymore
measles are around. Maybe the small outbreak in Texas where three children died has set the bar. Certainly it will quickly be surpassed.
polio, eradicated since the vaccine that I remember standing in a long line as a child in the 50’s will make a comeback. Parents were so ecstatic about it. but I believe there could be a lab somewhere with it. Since China and Russia are not fond of us it seems it could be disasterous
mumps. Let’s see how many deaf kids we can get.
and Rubella. Can infect pregnant women whose babies can be born with a syndrome.
and lastly Whooping cough. If you ever heard a child with it you never ever want any other child to suffer so.
no worries. The Free state of Florida (unless you are a pregnant women) does not want to force parents to vaccinate their kids.
yippee.
I think we should ban Floridians with young children from flying to other states, kind of like not allowing people to bring plants on internaitonal flights.
I can only shake my head in despair.
It's sort of ironic that his reasoning is that people should have a choice about what they put in their body, yet he's against abortion. I can be glad I don't live in Florida.
I wonder if Texas will be next?

DS decided to homeschool his 8 yo this year. I didn’t think it was a good idea but with the vaccine misinformation, uptick of Covid and other viruses I think it may be a wise decision. We need to get these rabid conspiracy theorists out of office.

I wonder how many physicians will restrict their practices to children who have been immunized. There are currently physicians who do that so I would guess that number will grow in Florida.
The requirement for immunization in Florida was for children in public schools and daycare, so if people didn’t participate in those institutions, they didn’t have to immunize their children. Also, there are religious exemptions. There are probably exemptions for children with fragile systems who should not receive immunizations. .
Relaxation of the rigid immunization schedule may allow parents who definitely want their children immunized, but who are akepitcal of so many immunizations in a concentrated time, to spread out those medical treatments. I say this because I remember reading one account from a thoughtful parent on the Mr. money mustache site of getting too heated conversations with her pediatrician about wanting to spread out immunizations over a longer time period.
I know that when my pets are shot up with all of those Immunizations, it often makes them sick.
I watched part of the RFK Jr. grilling yesterday. He was saying "anyone can get a covid booster". That's seems to be not true or just a lie. As I get the current guide lines if you are under 65 you need to have some sort of health condition that makes you vulnerable and a doctors prescription. My state and other blue states have made an exception for that and there seems to be a coalition of blue states making their own guidelines. It would seem like the corollary would also be true, that there are ways to avoid vaccination in places were it might be required. RFK Jr. needs to go.
I watched part of the RFK Jr. grilling yesterday. He was saying "anyone can get a covid booster". That's seems to be not true or just a lie. I believe he actually said "just about anyone can get a covid booster" although it was hard to tell since every Democrat spent their time attacking him and not allowing him to complete a sentence in response. Lots of talk-over makes for poor audio.

If you trust PBS, this is their fact check with quotes. The dems were rather aggressive. I suspect it was intentional to see if he would fumble something and it was a bit of a show. Speaking of which, Jim Jordan has dropped out of my news articles for some time now.

I was not talking about RFK. We live in Florida and DeSantis is the governor.
dh is very immunocompromised. Otherwise, he recovered from multiple hospital stays 47 hospital days last year with 17 of those in ICU. We don’t go into crowds. We would never go on a plane or cruise. If we go to the symphony for instance, we sit in the back eow on the end to avoid as many people as possible. And go in at the last minute. He is going next week to his MD to discuss if he needs to do anything about the vaccine situation. He is someone who worked very hard to be able to walk and participate is most of life and his sports activities from a condition he did not cause.
babies are very susceptible to these diseases. Many must go to daycare. If they cannot go due to illness someone has to stay home with them.
as far as the new national guidelines go with Covid we will have to see what they say. Over 65 they said will qualify (for now) but it will be interesting to see if an MD note is still needed.
as far as RFK is concerned he has admitted he has never treated patients with these diseases.
and here is a tape saying he is not an MD and people should not be taking medical advice from him

Lord help us.

Yes, I know you were not talking about RFK, but Rogar was and that's who my reply was directed to.
I'm sorry to hear that your husband is immunocompromised, that must be very stressful for you both.

I hadn't noticed a lack of Jim Jordan in the news but your bringing him up in an unexpected location made me wonder if there might be a fan club or something similar for those of you interested in a daily dose of the coach. Google served up a Facebook page that might fill the void for you. https://www.facebook.com/groups/2350773077/

I appreciate the update. I'd not thought of him for a long time until you mentioned how rude the dems were in the RFK Jr. inquisition. That was sort of his modus operandi.
Admittedly off topic since we were discussing the poor integrity of RFK, Jr. A thing they also picked on is his support of Trump for the Nobel Prize for Operation Warp Speed, and then intimating that the vaccine was ineffective against upper respiratory infections. And he brought up how the vaccine has cause fatal heart problems. It too bad he doesn't have a good perspective or scientific knowledge to identify and focus on the real causes of chronic diseases.

this made me laugh. Rfkj’s family is horrified by his actions tho I do not give them much in the way of respect either.

Thank you Alan. It is very hard to be a caregiver and I felt exhausted and worn out. He fought very hard to walk and get around, and even drives now. But I do believe it has made me more compassionate to those who suffer.
you need 95% immunized for herd immunity. Florida is already down to 90. We have people from all over the world on planes, lots of cruises going in and out so I imagine the potential for outbreaks is quite large here.
per the current (Unwoke) cdc website, there were 285 cases of measles in 2024. In 2025 so far it is 1431. About 12% end up in hospital and three have died.
this has the potential to be really big because immunizations are certain to go down now.

interesting article from Floridas surgeon general. My favorite is when he talks about you have sovereignty over your own body. Hmmmm.
Hmmmm is right, such blatant hypocrisy. Besides, children never have had sovereignty over their bodies - I remember my mother making me wash my face and brush my teeth against my will (and ironically, I am now returning the favor).
I too, am sorry for your DH's health struggles, Flowers. It is hard enough with my mother, and it really must be next-level tough when it is your lifelong partner.
