View Full Version : Simple SLF poll: Do you support Trump these days?
This is just a simple poll of the SLF community:
Do you support President Trump these days?

That is too simplistic a question for me to give an answer because I like some of the things Trump has done. I hate some of the things Trump has done.
So you tell me Bae, do I support him?

Maybe you would pick the third option, undecided?
Nope, nope, nope.
And I didn’t vote for him either!

But to be literal, I am not indifferent or undecided. So those answers don’t work for me either.

Well, the first one to pop into my mind is Executive Order 14168, a well written and comprehensive piece of government policy. I like it.
And thanks for asking because that caused me to revisit it and I see something I need to address with RFKjr. So
I am off to write a letter about FDA non-compliance with EO 14168.

Iris, I am wondering what you want/expect on non compliance? In part I am wondering about Time frame (it would be a different story of course one day verses months), as well as all the times I have seen sex listed/responded to as "yes please", and am wondering as years ago, I remember a company application that had M F H, and who I knew that was given the form, didn't know the term/medical diagnosis Hermaphrodite.
This made me laugh remembering that.

The specific case of non-compliance I am concerned about is the intake questions of the Red Cross for blood donation. The Red Cross asks my “gender” not my sex.
There are health related reasons for accuracy in identifying the sex of the donor. Not the damn “gender,” the sex. From the “gender is fluid” crowd the Red Cross doesn’t get accurate formation (and some of them will lie about their natal sex, too.) There are studies suggesting males with certain health problems have increased problems with blood transfusions from females.
The Red Cross tells me it is the FDA that has determined these intake questions. RFKJ heads up the FDA. if they’re not already being taking this into consideration, they need to in order to comply with the executive order 14168.
I would encourage you all to ignore Iris’s opinion on the blood supply.
I see units of human blood products nearly every day. I am familiar with their ordering, storage, and use. I am familiar with the labeling on the units. The label does not specify sex, the bar code (ISBT 128 is the official spec) doesn’t even contain a field. There is a donor ID, but that’s used for traceability, and is anonymized from the user-end. (There is a protocol for how to use the donor number for all sorts of useful things, a moment of clever searching would point you at endless processes and procedures.)
My understanding, though I’ve only worked the donor van a dozen times, is that gender is indeed asked/observed on intake of a donor, and that screening is used generally to protect the *donor* from anemia and other donation-related things. And has next to nothing with what happens to the blood once we have it in the bag.
As to the current overall state of medical research, boy Howdy I’d encourage you to ask a professional, or to really do your own informeded investigation from examining peer-reviewed sources, and to ignore what you hear on the Internet.

the Red Cross didn’t tell me anything about how blood is marked through its journey in the donation process.
I did say “studies suggest…” and you can find those as well as I can.
Yes there are different levels for males and females in hemoglobin levels required when donating. You say they are other sex related issues, OK. I myself was unable to donate blood this week because my hemoglobin level was too low. It is borderline all too often.
So let me ask you, if there are sex related issues for blood donors, then why don’t they ask the sex of donors on the form.?“Gender” in today’s world is not a synonym for biological sex. And I didn’t know one was allowed to “observe “ a patient’s sex in today’s environment and conclude the patient’s sex is different from the patient’s stated gender. Are you sure about that? it certainly has not been OK to do in most professional, educational, community, and social settings.
My accountant might have a different take, but it seems like he up the standard deduction for seniors.

One of the beautiful things Trump did in his first term was greatly increase the standard deduction. that simplified tax preparation so much. It was a beautiful thing.

okay---i tell you what----i'm too busy working on my projects to support anybody, unless it would be my petts. Yup. One thing that Trump guy hasn't done is instigate another "cash-for-clunkers" disaster, like what's his face. What a waste that was.
I read executive order14168 and it seemed rather Orwellian to me.
I have to admit there is ONE executive order that I support. It’s ending check payments (exception for few narrow exceptions). This includes fed check payments as well as payments TO the feds.
I have a personal hatred of checks, plus experience at work of having to pay additional duties outside the usual procedure. You have to check a check, find out which CBP port address it goes to, and then overnight it. When CBP issues a bill for additional duties, you have to sent the check via snail mail. I’m looking forward to being able to use Pay.gov for this.
I really dislike what he did to the rose garden.

I figured I was on the whole not a Trump supporter but had to put numbers on concepts to determine final score. Keep in mind I did not vote for Trump all three times, and if the lying Biden White House hadn’t tried to push an ancient human far past his prime into another term, I would’ve held my nose and voted for Trump’s Democratic opponent.
percentages below describe how important these concepts are to me
Favorable Trump actions
5% imposes trans language of reality in government
10% policy position, no men in women’s prisons, rape centers, sports, protect women and girls
5% UsAID demolition, challenges to other fat government departments
10% border has far fewer illegal crossings, discourages illegal immigration
10% world policy: stealth bombers to Iran’s nuke site, Ukraine funded, Israel support, brokers major peace talks
—————-
40%
Unfavorable Trump actions
20% abhorrent personal character, enjoys division and chaos ( although sometimes funny!)
10% tariffs, instability effect on economy & markets,
40% serious challenge to 1st Amendment/free speech, problems in intellectual honesty in government data
————
70% Sent from my iPad
yes this adds up to 110% so sue me. It is based on my “feelings” and feelings are not facts.

haha, thanks. I could adjust First amendment/free speech down to 30% I suppose, and that would still peg it as the single most important issue in my bag of feelings.

I passed the 25 gallon mark in blood donations this week. I donated all through the pandemic, and when I was younger often did platelets or double red. Now, I can only do red. Such an easy thing to do plus you have a pile of tshirts to wear to the gym, get gift cards etc and get a cookie! Actually I started in nursing school and all through my life have made it a priority. There is a critical need. I can’t believe it is an issue to report your gender at birth. It’s all about saving lives.
every four seconds someone dies of starvation action in the world. US aid may not have been perfect but they did try to address this problem. Maybe taking some time to study what food programs were working and improve them and save them could have saved a life. Domestically, Cutting school lunch and snap programs could have a devastating effect on children
also the doge firings did not take need, performance, skill etc. into account and left departments and families in chaos. Reading Tradds accounts and listening to one of my relatives who works in DC shows the effects on ordinary people who are trying to work hard and do the right thing.
the censorship and punishment of enemies is unacceptable and tyrannical.
So as I go through my late 70’s I look around and think, what is the purpose of all this? Why are we alive? What purpose is our life? I have had many friends pass and I may have another one year or fifteen years. Who knows. But I will always know that the virtues of generosity, kindness, sharing, understanding and loving have become more important as the years fly by.
some of the actions I see in our government today are just plain mean and cruel and I cannot support them.

Yes, abruptly changing meaning of words in English language is a sign of power takeover. Subvert the language. Define out of existence concepts you don't like. No one knows that better than the far left.
There are numerous articles about trans ideology stomping on women’s reality and rights in language, but this is the first one that came up in my Google search. Julie Bindle is an old school lesbian in England who works for women’s rights in this crazy world where “trans women are women. “
No they are not, but now we have a tug-of-war over meaning of the word “woman.” Congratulations progressives!
https://juliebindel.substack.com/p/the-misogyny-of-trans-ideology?utm_source=post-banner&utm_medium=web&utm_campaign=posts-open-in-app&triedRedirect=true
I don’t know if anyone is able to access the Substack article, but some exerpts:
“…Confusing, dehumanising and counter productive. That’s what I would call the latest assault on language suggested by a women’s cancer charity in recent days. Having gone through decades of stigma and shame about naming our genitals accurately as opposed to using stupid euphemisms, we are now advised that because some transwomen or transmen might find the term ‘vagina‘ offensive, upsetting, or exclusionary, we use ‘bonus hole’ or ‘front hole’…”
Add these terms to “ Chest feeding” and “ birthing person” and I ask you, who exactly is subverting our language? It isn’t the Trump camp.

I hate the fkng T-shirts they always trying to push on me while I’m giving blood. T-shirts. Socks. The only useful thing they dangled in front of me for a while was free movie passes, but neither DH nor I could get the weblinks to work and it wasn’t worth our time to complain. Because obviously we don’t give blood for the purpose of gathering the stupid perks. I just find them Annoying as hell and it seems I have to have a friendly argument every time at the Red Cross about taking this junk.
25 gallons! Major respect and thanks.
I do not support Trump’s agenda, insofar as he appears to have one. He has appropriated some of the worst ideas traditionally associated with the Left (protectionism, anti-vax, industrial policy, censorship and racial essentialism) and combined them with a crude populist nationalism.

I worked across he street from a Red Cross donation center. You can give platelets weekly and I went almost every other week for a number of years. The employer used to let us leave with pay for several hours a month to do blood donations, meals on wheels, food drive deliveries to food banks and so on. Until a big company took over, did layoffs and stopped it. Profits over people. The story that repeats itself over and over.

so true. As an independent I have voted for the best candidate regardless of party most of my life. Now I feel like it is the lesser of two evils.
I only see lawsuits, wild spending sprees on a whim, erosion of the safety nets, rising health and food costs and more childhood illnesses and deaths coming.

Yeah, DH pointed out the the rise in the stock market recently, but frankly, that's a great metric if you have money in the stock market. What most people care about is the rise in the prices of everyday things. When I see the prices of houses--my own included, which I bought for $164,000 in 2018 and is now worth $300k. That's great for me if I want to sell, , but I don't know how the average younger person wanting to buy, especially when wages aren't keeping pace. My food bill is up from pre-COVID times by 40%.
And compounding that, as flowers said, are the cuts in services and safety nets. I have been doing market research over the past week with everyday people about how social determinant of health have impacted their own health and they all spoke about lack of affordability and how that jeopardizes their health. They spoke about the difficulty in getting Medicaid now, and my Latine focus group also talked about how fear of ICE is preventing them from seeking medical care.
No argument about the stock market, although it's rise is a house of cards in my estimation, based on historically overpriced stock a nd economists predictions of a slow down or worse due to tariffs and other trump policies. I think it is either a bubble or due for a big correction. So far I've been wrong about the market, though. Precious metals, which many have considered a hedge against inflation and economic insecurity have been hitting all time highs. Last I checked, gold was up about 40% for the year.
My liberal mainstream news has been highlighting the rising cost of groceries and inflation and unemployment creeping up, and slow economic growth. As long as the price of gas stays low, the price of eggs and bread stay stable, some will be happy as those are primary indicators of the economy for many.

I’ve nearly doubled my net worth since Trump was elected. I suppose this is a “feature” of Trump being in office.
And locally, there are now so many lovely yachts being sold at discount prices by people who are seemingly suddenly very eager to sell, whereas just a few years ago you couldn’t find anything on the market. Lots of those expensive Sprinter-van conversions too, for maybe 40% less than last year.
I have a property here on the beach with two homes on the land. My Mother just moved out of one, and my Dad moved out of the other last week (into the one my Mom vacated). When word got out that people were “moving”, I was swamped with unsolicited offers to buy the property, clearly from people with cash in hand. Weird. About 50% lowball offers, 30% market-price offers, 20% well above market. One fellow even offered me a life-estate deal for my father, when hearing he was staying, and I wasn’t selling.
Great time to make money. If you already have money.

62% of Americans have money in the stock market so It’s a good environment for most Americans.
I haven’t been tracking my net worth since I only do that once a year, but it would be nice if I see on our annual day of reckoning that my net worth hasn’t dropped from last year given the money we’ve given away.

No es posible. There is no way that I could support either Donald Trump nor the Republican Party of today. I have to live with myself and realistically, I could not live with myself were I to be a traitor or to go rogue and support the GOP. In my case, this will not happen in this lifetime BUT I will say one positive thing for today's GOP - they are working overtime to end up with a country that splits up and I very much approve of that much - so for what it's worth I have to give the GOP credit for something - hastening this country's split up. So Thank You GOP for that much. I hope to watch this sorry saga in comfort from low cost, no need to live in terror of health care Ecuador. Rob
Came back to add - consider me an Olympic medal free Greg Louganis, a former Olympian who recently sold his Olympic medals and his house in LA to flee the United States for Panama. He is such a positive role model for today's youth - I wish he could give speeches to high school students regarding leaving the US to have some kind of shot at life and with less capitalistic terror/fear. Panama really IS a better deal in certain key ways and Panama is not the only better deal out there - but it's one that Louganis could soon speak of and encourage others to flee also. Rob

As I've mentioned, my daughter has "fled", and will only be returning to the USA to visit friends and relatives. A fair number of her classmates/age-mates from the US have chosen the same path. It is not a good time to be an academic in the USA. There is some brain-drain in progress, and the US won't be the better for it.
It is highly likely I will follow her in some fashion. I'd rather live closer to her, and be closer to Cambridge and Oxford myself for some of the work I'm doing.
The UK has its own problems. There's really no "ideal" place to "flee" out there, you just have to figure out what your goals are, and what matters to you.

Ecuador does check the boxes of several issues that are of great importance to me much better than the United States does and life is short and luckily, very luckily, I was raised to have zilch loyalty to any one country - WW2 proved doing such is not wise long term. I believe I am extremely fortunate in this one way - I was raised to have no loyalty and to be realistic. Not all are gifted with such, but some few do learn this on their own. But getting back to your point - Ecuador (or any other country to include Austria) is not perfect. It's a much better match for what's important to me and it's a much better deal economically for both my husband and myself, plus SO does not have to learn a new language which he would had we pursued Austria. But I agree with you for once - no one country on this planet is going to work for all or be perfect for all. Rob

Hmmm, why don’t you fill in those blanks.
But your mention of Ecuador reminds me, how are you coming along in your immigration plans plans to flee? Weren’t you going to visit there this summer?
What about dual citizenship with Mexico, is that a possibility?
We are looking into weird legal loopholes with an ancestry situation for my husband; if it works, I would be so happy.
I think yearly, somewhere around 5000 Americans actually renounce their citizenship for good. A considerably greater number simply choose to live abroad.
Be very wary of the tax consequences of living abroad, unexpected things can bite you. (For instance, if you get a mortgage denominated in British pounds, and pay it back, and the exchange rate has varied over that time, you have set yourself up for a world of hurt in reporting/not reporting the "income" from the foreign exchange rate arbitrage. You can even get bit if you didn't make any "profit" on the exchange. Cash is king.)

So then---that guy Tyler will get to plead GUILTY for shooting Charlie, and get a life term, too. I know they are in different states, but right next to each other. Meanwhile Mr T says they deserve to be EXECUTED, like they would be in Zurra and places like that. But yeah---Fanaticrats, no matter what they say, always demand "justice" for the perceived underdog, plus oppose anything Mr T says, so yeah---as soon as a couple o' bleeding-heart Demmmacrats take over, after 20-30 years or less, those murderers will be free men. As I've recently posted, the company I worked for sold itself to a new company out of California and this new company on some days makes waiting tables seem like an option (no worries, I know much better than to go back to f and b).....right now I am stacking all the cash I can in the credit union and will likely - if things continue at this rate - leave next Summer. I will keep you'all updated and I hope to post photos here. So looking forward to this trip! SO doesn't know this but the one splurge I will make (we have even agreed to waive Christmas between us - but not our relatives) is premium economy tickets to and from. I am also trying very hard to not fly back through Miami, which I have heard from neighbors is an absolute nightmare for all, or Atlanta, where I have heard that travelers coming from Ecuador and Colombia are singled out for harassment by US CBP. I'm trying for Charlotte or maybe Dallas - but I will probably have to fly a US based airline to accomplish the above. LOL LOL LOL what irony, no? Rob

We are looking into weird legal loopholes with an ancestry situation for my husband; if it works, I would be so happy. Tybee, hi! I would counsel moving quick if you are trying to reestablish in another country. I know that some EU countries are making it harder to reestablish this way (under familial ancestry). Italy would be an example. We have thought of Mexico but both of us are looking for an adventure and I specifically am looking for passport B, something easier to accomplish in Ecuador than Mexico. Also I do appreciate that Ecuador uses the US dollar - this just seems to make things easier on an everyday level. I am not against Mexico, though, to be clear - Mexico is going places under Claudia Scheinbaum while the US continues to sink - it's an attractive long term option, especially given that it is rising AND has socialized medicine while the US continues to sink. Eventually the two will meet and Mexico will be the undisputed better deal due to human life being worth socialized medicine there. So, no I am not against Mexico. It's just that from a passport B perspective, Ecuador is easier AND I can come up with enough money to pull it off if I sell off my portion of the house and my Cousin has already said she would be willing to buy me out as she has no desire to go back to Minneapolis or start over elsewhere.
So I hope this explains why Mexico is not number one on the table? And I wish you the best with any application(s) you may make for ancestry citizenship! Rob
Thank you! I will keep you posted if we get anywhere with it. Glad to hear you are working towards exploring more about Ecuador. Just so darn far from grandchildren for us.

Hi, IL. to answer your question, it's looking like next Summer for an exploratory (is that the right word?) visit to Quito and Cuenca. Rob
I’m confused by what you’re saying. You say you would be likely to “leave next summer.”
do you mean leave the country for good? Or simply leave to visit Ecuador?
edited to add: as I read carefully, you were talking about a vacation trip to Ecuador next summer. So that doesn’t even get “fleeing this country “onto your calendar.

Please, someone who thinks this is a good thing and makes sense explain it to me. okay---i kind of agree with you. but yeah----if they build the darn paths, the fEEEEEEBleBikes will come, and the trails will be just as dangerous to actually Bike on, as the highways. See? People who are too WEAK and Feeble to pedal a REAL bike, will be flying blind nearly 30 mph, down a "bike trail"! Can't have that. Nope. In Holland, the cops now have test stands, to check EBikes(which evidently have become a plague like locusts) to see if they've been altered to increase their top speed, because it has become a problem. See? Yup.

Let me clarify - I would be leaving my employer for good - that's why I am stacking cash right now. After I leave my employer I could take whatever time I need to visit Ecuador for an exploratory visit. Should Ecuador not suit, Mexico is a good back up plan B and is perfectly acceptable - it's just that Ecuador gives a better chance of Passport B. Rob

Since this thread seems to be the one where organic discussions of fleeing the United States happens for the most part, I’ll talk about my new business idea for Nigerian scammers. They may already be doing it because they’re a very smart bunch.
Based on more than one Interview financial podcaster Caleb Hammer had with completely clueless young people who want to flee the United States, I believe there is scam money to be made in dangling “Skip out on America” programs in front of these folks.
The scam would be masquerading as a company that will guide you through easy ways to emigrate to the “better “ countries Rob lionizes. You know, those Meccas where the government provides many free goods and services and Nazi politicians don’t send goons after your brown skinned neighbors.
So, my scammer would sell these clueless people promises to get them permanent resident visas and easy Employment in high paying jobs and practically free apartment all for the low price of $14,996 ( luxury package) or $7,999 for the standard package. 20% off if you sign on today! Easy monthly payments accepted.
It is very easy to set up a website for a faux company and supply false documentation for all of these promised items all the while collecting the victim’s Social Security numbers and bank accounts and etc., for a double scam.
Really if you would listen to a couple of these interviews, you have to wonder where these young folks are getting their ideas about how welcoming other countries are to people like themselves that have zero money, that have in fact, debt.
I will admit that youth is on their side because some countries certainly welcome youthful applicants but those youthful applicants have to have some money or skills that are in demand.

I think most of them have very little clue what is involved, and how to succeed. It's a bit tricky to do correctly even if you have resources and are a "desirable immigrant".
(Now, it's fairly easy to just bop around the world, never staying in any one place long enough to exceed your tourist visa, but...)
(I still kick myself for not having jumped on a job offer in Iceland a few years ago that came with all the visa stuff dealt with.)

I received a “we are considering your application seriously “ letter for an interview in… was it Vienna? I’m not even sure why I applied for such a crazy faraway job in a country in which I had no interest. I remember the salary was crazy high, but later I learned that the cost of living there is crazy high. I didn’t go and I know thru the grapevine they had many applicants.
This was during a strange period where technical services library managers were apparently in short supply because I got similar letters from very large public library systems that were beyond my level of experience of the time.
And there were two occasions where a path existed for a job in
scotland (my dream country) directly in the specialized library field I was in. The first time I missed the opportunity and didn’t really know about it until the project was practically completed. The second time I was too comfortable in St. Louis to contemplate it seriously.

Rogar, I just opened my computer and laughed when I saw who they awarded it to, for the same reason you said. He'll probably make some comment today about how the "rigged" Nobel committee handed the peace prize to a terrorist.. With Pope Leo being chosen, an American Catholic with a moral stance for immigrants, I wonder if this is some global middle finger.

I agree that tighter border control was necessary, but my question always is to DH when he raises the same point: did the ends justify the means? Trump always believes it does. I disagree. DH says I "hate" Trump. Dismissing my concerns like that is an easy way to minimize the truth about the impact of Trump's policies and executive actions he's taken to achieve them. I don't "hate" him "just because." I hate how he does things. I think there will be consequences to acting recklessly, illegally, and what I consider immorally in the name of "getting things done."

I think simply being “tough on the border “ naturally reduces the illegal crossing quite a bit because those wishing to come here through illegal means are discouraged by the tough talk. That’s just talk and is cheap to carry out. I’m sure there are all kinds of border control efforts going on, though, that are not cheap or free.
deporting those already in this country doesn’t affect illegal crossings, at least not initially. I suppose it’s possible that those who are deported make attempts to come back into this country. But deportation actions are, to me, separate from just stopping the huge flow of what numbers come over our border.
this all assumes we can trust the numbers, and that is… an assumption.

I agree about that. I think when people see how Trump acts they just naturally want to stay out of his way, but again, that has consequences. Instability, uncertainty, overall bad vibes leading to things like excessive violence.

Very specifically if you are able to focus, do you dislike the reduction in the number of people entering this country illegally from our southern border?
If so, if you dislike it, why? If you answer “yes” to this I assume you like huge numbers of people crossing into our border illegally.,

I don’t think the means justified the end. I live near the border. The propaganda on how bad it was/is ludicrous. At one time, yes, but not in quite a while. The current show of force is unjustified.
ETA…. As Bae would say… “It will be interesting” to see how we fare in the near future. There are many jobs we Americans do not want or are willing to do that were done by immigrants or migrants…. specifically picking crops (to name only one instance). People are now afraid to cross the border (or not allowed to do so) by the current regime. I don’t believe it bodes well for our country.

Yes, I am worried about agricultural crops not getting picked. I’ve never understood why a lot more H2 visas ca’t be given out to so many of these illegal workers but whatever, the government is often ineffective.
When you say “At one time, yes” I assume you mean the illegal crossings were bad but not for “quite a while.” You mean since January 2025 it has been better?
DH worked for many years with Mexican men who came into the United States on those visas under temporary worker status in the Green industry. They were here for eight months or so and then went back home to Mexico. They were happy to do that for the most part. There was at least one guy who was ambitious, learned English, and was able to get a commercial drivers license because he could pass the tests. So I don’t know if he was actually here legally year-round, or not, but he had a wife in Mexico and an also girlfriend in the United States.

I saw a video today of a child being kidnapped by ice while walking home from school. She is about the age of my granddaughter. The agents kidnap her and put her in a car while an onlooker screams and asks the child for her name.
Apparently this is a technique ICE is using as they then call the parents to pick up the child and then arrest the parents. Allegedly, they call this the Freaky Friday program. This was in Chicago.
Where my children live in a city in Maine, children of immigrants are afraid to go to school.
Where my children live in a city in Maine, children of immigrants are afraid to go to school.
My partner is an elementary school teacher in the Skagit Valley in Washington. The public school she teaches at is a cool dual-language school - the kids receive half their day’s instruction in Spanish, the other half in English. The immersive program begins in Kindergarten.
ICE has been hassling the school and the families, and many of the Hispanic families are disengaging. The Skagit Valley has had a significant Hispanic population since WWI, and most of those families have been living there for a century.
Shameful.

What is now happening..
- Thousands of federal workers who provide critical services across the country are being fired by the current regime. This has NEVER been done during a shutdown! The purpose of decimating our government?
- Democratic troop pay bill during the shutdown blocked by the GOP!
- Speaker Johnson keeps House lawmakers away, canceling another week’s session as shutdown drags….. extends recess to Oct 19. Epstein files anyone?
- Johnson told to say shutdown is 100% Democrats fault when GOP has the house, senate and supreme court. Unbelievable!
- Shut down websites for dozens of Inspectors General (IGs) that publish hotline numbers where whistleblowers can submit complaints of waste, fraud, and abuse and make reports detailing corruption available to the public. Wonder why?
- Johnson tells lawmakers to skip townhall meetings with constituents.
Unbelievable to me that people still vote for republicans after all these shenanigans!

Don't you have a Canadian parent or grandparent? It is now possible to get dual Canadian citizenship through that path and might be something to look at.
My mother’s family came from Ontario to Michigan in the early 1930s. Illegally! Just crossed the Ambassador Bridge. The last four kids were born in the US and my mother was the youngest. My mother’s father ran off in 1943, when she was less than a year old. Grandmother never went back to Canada as she was afraid she wouldn’t be allowed back into the US. She died in 1960. My mother was in her senior year of high school and moved in with a cousin and her husband.
I’m single and my entire support system is here.
I did just read about the Canadian citizenship through grandparents thing. Didn’t know that was so new.

Agreed. At least my mother’s relatives came from Canada. My dad’s father’s mother was from Quebec. I’m more Canadian than anything else.
But I’m under no illusions about Canada. It’s expensive, high taxes, and a severe shortage of housing from friends that live there.

I wonder how the Canadian retirement system pays out to Americans who enter Canada via citizen by descent program. if the Americans have never paid into it, do they get to fully participate in pensions from the Canadian government? I say that because if one isn’t working, one could choose less populated places where housing isn’t as expensive.

There was a recent call on Dave Ramsay show from a young guy in America with a young family who was in love with the idea of buying a hunting lodge in Canada. He went to Canada once a year to hunt and fish.
Of course he had no money. Dave gave him all kinds of advice about securing financing, testing the waters by working there for a while, etc., etc. but they didn’t even touch on the issue of legal immigration.
This guy‘s fantasy was a complete pipe dream.

If you have contributed to both systems, you can collect from both systems. Obviously, if you only contributed to social security, you would not get a Canadian pension.
I wanted to make folks aware of the grandparent thing because it is new and many people might be unaware and might find it useful, especially people with children to be concerned about.
Several of my son's friends are going elsewhere, and Canada would be a valuable citizenship if you could get it, especially if you are trying to stay in contact with family in the US. Especially since you don't have to relinquish US citizenship.
Having had your grandmother never naturalize is actually terrific if you want to obtain citizenship. Often, descent citizenship is lost if the person naturalizes, but not always, and it is really tricky from what we have found. It depends on the law in existence at the time, and then you have the laws in existence when your parents married, and when you were born, for example.

Luckily, I know both my mother's parent's names, and even her mother's maiden name. That would certainly make searching easier. Guess I should get an Ancestry account and do some searching.
It sounds like it would be very easy to do. PM if you want me to do it, I have an Ancestry account. Sometimes the library has them too.
Then, you can fill out an online form with one of the lawfirms that does these cases, and then can let you know for free how hard it would be. Honestly, it sounds kind of straightforward.

I just googled my grandmother's name. Immediately turned up a Family Search profile on a brother of my mother's who I knew well (the family was large and some stayed in Canada). Found grandmother's maiden name, grandfather's middle name, where uncle was born. A town where some relatives lived into the 90s. I found out they came to Detroit in 1928, if that's true, a few years off from what I was told. All I need is my mother's birth certificate (from Detroit) and see what I can do to find documentation on grandparents (wedding info in a church register?).
Going to PM you! Thanks for the info.

Honey, I don’t trust the gubment much even in the best of times. Or rather I should say “trust but verify” and when there is no way for me to verify, I just have to accept numbers given within the context of what I know and hope those numbers are internally consistent.
What I know is that much reporting shows drastic drops in illegal crossings at the southern border, your own observation not withstanding.
Thanks to Tybee for getting me on the ancestry kick! It's amazing how easily you can find stuff! She found my material grandmother's birth record in Ontario (1901). I found grandparent's marriage license from 1921 in Ontario. 1930 and 1940 US census show my grandparents living in Detroit. Turns out they immigrated in 1921, same year they were married. 1930 census indicates my grandmother was NOT a naturalized US citizen, which is vital for the Canadian citizenship thing.
This has become a challenge of sorts. I have to order my mother's birth certificate by mail from the state of MI.

The polling I heard within the past two or three days from CBS and CNN shows Trump approval numbers holding steady. Both news organizations are befuddled by that. One of the CBS Talking Heads said his numbers are the same that propelled him into the White House, so he could win the White House today.
I heard a brief Trump clip. Trump said in a throwaway line, typical to his style, that the Nobel peace prize winner was dedicating it to him. I laughed to myself about it and thought “Sure Jan.”
And then Shazam! I learned that’s the truth, and that the winner of the prize really was dedicating it to Donald Trump and another guy. Mea Culpa, DJT.
I listened to Jared Kushner’s speech from Tel Aviv yesterday. That guy spoke extemporaneously without notes and man. He’s impressive in his down to earth honesty. He just seems trustworthy. Ivanka spoke after him and as always she’s polished and sophisticated, but she spoke from notes. These are impressive young people.
Can you imagine Hunter Biden making a peace deal in the Middle East? Ha ha, ha ha ha… Ha ha ha…Hell even Daddy Joe couldnt pull that off with all of his decades of political experience.
Think the peace in Gaza will last longer than Liz Truss' lettuce?

there will be no “ lasting peace” in that part of the world. I look at that hotspot the same way I look at criminals in my old neighborhood. It is a relief when they are gone for a while, jailed. All of the bleeding heart liberals wring their hands crying “prison doesn’t solve the problem of poverty and violence “ and I say well you know what, it solves a problem in my immediate neighborhood for a while. It gives us relief from the chaos and unlawfulness caused by these perps. For a while. And I will take that.
Give the people of Israel and Gaza some peace.

okay---the main thing with demmacratz is their hearts always bleed for the wrong individuals. Especially the ones descrbed in the propaganda videos. But yeah---if we can get covid or whatever under control, it's about time to develop a vaccine for TDS. Yup. Hope that helps you kids.
