View Full Version : Good news/bad news.....(DJT/Portland, OR)

I have good news and bad news. DJT is sending troops into Portland, OR, authorized to use "full force."

Good news - Troops are coming to Portland.
Bad news - Troops are coming to Portland.

Bad news - I know Portlanders, I lived there for five years. They will not tolerate this BS for long. I can totally see an uprising of some kind coming and I do believe this might mean bloodshed and deaths - entirely the blame of DJT and more reason to imprison him in hard labor in El Salvador for the remainder of his life. At any rate, this was the wrong US city to pull this, but let this Administration find that out themselves.

Good news - I believe if there is indeed an uprising, the fall out may split this country up faster and given that such is the very best we could hope for going forward, I say bring it on! How cool that my adopted hometown may lead to justice for millions of US citizens. As always, I am proud of my affiliation with Portland, OR, I just wish it was closer to the border and I wish it were less expensive. What's your take? Rob

I'm curious how many troops he is sending to the very small area of downtown PDX that has occasional unrest. I foresee lots of standing around. If it rains, even more.

If it rains, even more. This is something that has worked against Portland in the media, I believe, and what do you think given that you live in the area? The area in question is but a very small few block area of downtown Portland. It is not the entire city frothing and on edge as the media and the GOP in general would have the public believe. I worry because I know Portlanders - they will not tolerate this BS for long and if an uprising were to occur, I can see it taking place in Portland more than in most other US cities. This invasion goes against everything Portland stands for and I do believe Oregon would be best served joining up with California and Washington and seeing if Canada would be willing to take them OR create for real the long discussed notion of Cascadia. Oregon is far too good to be part of the current United States of America and what it's about and what it stands for. I hope in my lifetime Oregon can break free of the United States, it is such a wonderful place and deserves to be part of something better than what the US is becoming/has become.

And stay safe! Who knows what is going to take place in Oregon, now? All we need is one rabid MAGA to pull the trigger on someone innocent and my wish for the US to split may very well start at this point. I personally would avoid downtown like a plague until we know how this is going to play out. Rob

I suspect part of the point of this kabuki show is to draw a reaction from Portlanders, so the administration can point and say “see, see, left wing terror groups!”

Probably the best response is to simply ignore them, or bring them some Voodoo doughnuts.

Great idea! Send the Unipiper to greet them!

I'm guessing that's part of it. I think the overall plan is to highlight the effect progressive politics has had on safety and security in progressive areas. It also gives the DOJ further opportunities to track the planning and logistics sponsors which plan, organize and fund efforts such as this:

It's my understanding that the federal ICE facilities have been under nearly daily assault by protestors for the past 4 months or so and local politics has prevented city resources from intervening to the point that even local noise ordinances are not enforced as they may interfere with protest efforts.

I see where some politicians are warning, "don't take the bait". I imagine Trump's brain has not moved beyond the riots five or so years ago in addition to wanting some sort of conflict. I wonder if there are protests he will charge them as terrorists, since that is what antifa seems to be now. I can imagine that some day Trump's masked men will escalate a situation and innocent people will be hurt. And he will say, I told you so.

The Oregonian has described any recent protests as low key involving a small number of people and some have been arrested by local authorities. They were described as basically throwing sticks and rocks at police. At least they aren't throwing sandwiches! Quote for the Oregon Governor.

“We have the situation under control with the ICE facility in Portland. … There’s not a problem at the federal facility, and when there is a situation that requires police enforcement, it is happening and we are holding people accountable,” she said.

And this story makes me think you don't need the DOJ to investigate why people are protesting:

Slightly aside, but local TV has had ads wanting people to apply with ICE. They claim up to a $50,000 signing bonus plus salary. Local news has said the bonus and salary could be pulling local law enforcement away because they can't compete. That's sort of a catch 22. I suppose they also recruit former high school football players.

Rob, I'm not interested in another Civil War or Blue/Red version of the Hatfields and the McCoys. I am not a fan of many aspects of this culture nor of the politics of the day, but we have managed to get through our differences over 250 years and I believe we can get through this without any kind of ideological or geopolitical divorce.

okay----i support the efforts of our great leader, Mr Bad Orange Man and his henchman to deal with the weirdos in Portland and other diseased urban areas, irregardless of cost or loss. Yup. I'm sick and tired of it. Also, he should deal with the proliferation of EEEEEEEEEEBikes, as well. Jah. Hail to the Commander in Chief. Yup.

Wow! Henchmen is the appropriate word. Should send them to your house and see how you’d feel! Sounds like you are hailing the hitler wannabe too!

The naked bike race in St. Louis is “a disappointment “according to DH because the people you want to see naked aren’t really naked. The people you don’t want to see naked are pretty naked.

On a brighter side, this put a small smile on my face. Portland may have it's wokeness, but it's unique. I hope they don't get arrested for antifa terrorists!

The organization, an offshoot of the World Naked Bike Ride group, made the announcement in an Instagram post (https://www.instagram.com/reel/DPRoaR8D3mv/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link&igsh=MzRlODBiNWFlZA==) on Wednesday, writing, “Emergency World Naked Bike Ride coming up in response to the militarization of our city. Plans are being worked on.”

Count me as another who is not hoping for a civil war.Hi Rugarosa! I'd like to just state here that I am not hoping for a Civil War, either, and I don't understand why folks would think that based on what I have posted. My take is that things have gotten to the point that conflict of some kind is inevitable and I am not one to flinch or look away from ugly reality - life has taught me to embrace such and be guided by it. Meaning - things getting progressively more unstable - plans in place. To me, and I do understand that not everyone is going to share my take here, this is what adults do when the world go absolutely nuts. Once again, I don't want a Civil War - my take is that some kind of conflict is now inevitable. Recognizing this is not the same as wishing for it, no? And no snark meant, I'm just amazed that anyone would think I WANT war. No, I don't - I grew up with stories of how awful the aftermath of WW2 was in Austria. Do you know that my Mother did not drink a Coca Cola until she was 14 - the same year she ate beef for the first time. I'm not looking for a repeat. Rob

Hi Rob! I have never seen you as a warmonger by any means, but you have said repeatedly that you look forward to the USA splitting up, and I cannot imagine how that could ever happen in a peaceful fashion.
