We are in DESPERATE need of a new mattress and found the TP to be very comfortable when we slept on the one at our son's home. In checking Sunday's paper it shows a few styles with varying prices. Would the best way to find the one we want ... to go to the store and try them out or is there criteria we should look for. Thought I'd ask those that know!

Go to a store that has a few of them and try them out (lay on them for more than just a couple minutes - let your back relax). I found a few to be too soft and others too firm. If you liked the one at your son's place, ask him which mattress he has and then try it again at the store. Even though I don't like pillow top beds, I actually ended up w/ one since I liked the combination of softness and firmness.

Once you have selected the one that works best for you, you can either get it from the store or straight from TempurPedic. If you get it from TP, they usually have something like a 90-day try at home thing where you can change your mind (this is not an option if you get it from the store, at least it wasn't in my case).

These mattresses are very pricey but worth it to me - it's helped my back pain a lot. And since I opted for the moveable base, it helps my feet too when I need to put them up!

Not sure where you live but one thing you might want to consider is that these mattresses are HOT! We ordered two custom cuts for one of our guest rooms and they are wonderful, except in Summertime. For some reason it seems that they absorb the heat or something. In the Spring, Fall, or Winter not an issue. Just something to think about. Of course, I am talking 100+/- not your normal summers>8)

Peace

we got one directly from TP for the 90 night guarantee. We got one of the low profile bases and a king that was not the bottom model, but one of the plain models. I love it. Never slept better. Especially if you have a restless co-sleeper.
The only warning I have is it is warm in the summer and we don't use air conditioning, but I live in the North East. I just lie on top of it with a light sheet, but sometimes DH finds it too warms and retreats to a guest bed. In the winter it is heavenly and very warm with quilts piled on top.

when they moved it up the stairs it was like a giant noodle. We got deep pocket sheets (not from TP) and they never come undone. for pillows I just got some at the local department store.

I have a cheap knock-off from IKEA - 2.75" memory foam topper and foam underneath that. It's probably not as good as the "real thing", but it was about 20% of the cost, so . . . not a hard decision, LOL! I love it anyway. Firm, but with just enough give that it's comfortable.

Thanks for this alternative suggestion, SoSimple. I really think I need a new mattress (regular, ongoing neck and back pain), but definitely cannot afford one. I will take a look at the IKEA options.

My futon was getting a little hard and I picked up a 1" memory foam topper off Amazon. I have liked very much, and have looked at the total memory foam matresses. There's no way I can afford a posturpedic, but there are some memory foam matresses on Amazon for a fraction of the real thing and they seem to get good reviews. I've wondered if your paying for brand hype and the knock offs would be as good?

While looking at TP mattresses at a furniture store, the salesman, knowing I couldn't afford one, suggested buying a knockoff from Sam's Club. I'm happy with it, but it is a bit warm and a bit tricky finding sheets with deep enough pockets (hooray for JC Penney). I am finding that there is a bit of a pit developing in the center even though I try to sleep away from there. Dunno if that happens with a much more expensive TP mattress, but mine isn't even a year old yet and I'm rolling into the middle in my sleep.

Ditto the IKEA version. Got ours on craigslist, from someone who had just bought it & needed to sell after a few nights on it. It was virtually new, and a super price. The timing was pure luck for me... hauling it was an adventure. We dismantled our cotton futon, and a friend used the batting for garden mulch!

Yea I know people who have gone back to regular mattresses because they are HOT. It doesn't have to be over 100, basically just anywhere that gets *a* summer, they'll amplify the heat.

Thanks for the great responses. Lots to think about. We currently have a pillowtop. It has been great sleeping but now it is creaking and groaning and does have places molded where we sleep. It was expensive and really didn't last long. Next week I think we will go shopping and check out what's available. Based on the discussion here ... the heat factor is a concern.
