DH and I have been invited to one... Someone we know, their father died What is the difference between this and a memorial? Do we bring flowers? This person is not a close close friend but a friend nonetheless. DH got a kick being around thier father and thought he was a hoot

Difference between the two? No difference. Celebrations of life and memorials are gatherings that are remembrances on a causal scale. Dress code is relaxed, and flowers need not be considered.

Take your memories of the individual whose life is being celebrated and share them with the members of the family. There will be photos and physical memorials of their life - any awards, spcial interests, etc - on display.
It actually can be quite illuminating and enjoyable to see the impact that one quiet person can have on a community over a lifetime.
