View Full Version : I haven't done that/had that in a long time.
Let's have a little fun!
Last night I was watching one of my favourite television series, A Touch of Frost, and there Inspector Frost was, eating a bat of cotton candy! Something I haven't done in years!!!
How about you? Is there anything you remember that you haven't done/had in years? (A long time).
I haven't worn white gloves, socks with ruffles, pop-it beads, or a size 9 in a very long time!!
Lobster! Used to be that we would have it for a special occation once every year or so. Now it's either too expensive or our wallets are tighter, not sure which. It's probably been 20 years.
The second thing that came to mind was a long distance bus or train trip. Used to travel that way occationally and it was a fun culltural experience.
Sugar loaded cereal. But I decided that I'm going to buy it whenever I want to now. Bring on the Sugar Corn Pops!
A caramel apple. I went to an art fair yesterday and I had decided beforehand that if I saw someone selling caramel apples, I would get one. Unfortunately, I didn't find one. <sigh> I guess I could make my own, but for some reason it is something I associate with outdoor festivals.

I haven't had little powdered sugar donuts for a long time. We usually have little powdered sugar donuts once a year when we go camping but have forgotten to do so the past few years.
I haven't laughed so hard my back hurts for years and years and years. I have a cold with chest congestion so recently I've coughed so much my stomach hurts. I'd like to go forever without that happening.

In Scotland we all grew up with McCowan's toffees - all sorts of flavours, from liquorice to banana split - and 'Penny Dainties' - a gobstopper of a toffee which cost a penny (old LSD money, pre-decimal). The company recently ceased trading.. A part of most Scottish children's childhood... GONE!
The products were all produced with a picture of a 'Heilan' coo' (highland cow) on the wrapping.. http://www.scottishsweets.com/Products.asp?CategoryName=McCowans
Fun posts everybody!
Valley. Re: white gloves, as a young girl I remember how I always stared at the older women at church who wore white gloves. So princess like. Re: size 9, I think I bypassed that size altogether when I was maturing. :laff: I went from an average/little larger than average size, right up to a double digit size overnight. Smaller sizes, pooh! :)
Rogar. You know, I've never experienced sitting down to a lobster dinner. After reading your post I'm going to work on changing that!
Marianne. Re: sugar laden cereals, my younger ones are always asking for such and although I allow it to a degree, I avoid making it a habit. Nice part is, if mom is craving a little sugar at the time we're out shopping, I can always pick up a box and justify it as being "for the kids"! :laff:
Daisy. Your post made me think about candy apples! Gosh, I love candy apples!!! Haven't had a candy apple in decades...
Goldensmom. Donuts are one of my best friends! Re: laughing, when I get a real good laugh on, my stomach tends to be the first thing that reacts to such laughter! Severe tightness, pulling, tensing! P.S. Sending get well wishes your way.
Ishbel. I went in a checked out the store. Wow! So sad it is seeing the demise of any longstanding/familiar business, especially when it dates back to ones childhood.

Not just my childhood, but probably my Mum's, too!
McCowans toffee. Haven't looked for it for a long time - and now it's gone..... just another thing that you think will last forever.
Ishbel. If my mind serves me correctly, as a young child I remember seeing chocolate/toffee boxes graced with the Highland Cow. A refection of retailers (at the time) who took pride in providing consumers with something extra special.

Speaking of toffee, I yearn for and mourn the demise of Collard and Brower Licorice Toffee.

Callard and Bowsers Liquorice toffee was wonderful, Goldensmom. McCowans wasn't too bad, either. It was a black toffee with a sandwich of white toffee in the middle. It turned children's mouths a satisfying black colour that lasted for hours, much to the dismay of mothers. It was always banned in our house on Sundays in case we went to church with black teeth.
Another great Scottish toffee maker was Keiller's of Dundee (the family also makes famous marmalade) - I loved their butterscotch fingers as a child, and luckily have a family recipe which tastes very similar, and I make it about twice a year, always once at Christmas for foodie baskets for friends!

Thank you. I will check out Keiller's. Now I'm on a quest.
Ishbel and Goldensmom. You guys know all the good names! :)
I haven't bobbed for apples, since I was a child......before I knew about bacteria!
Ignorance was such bliss! :~)
I used to buy 2 kinds of Popsicles when I was young (l950's).....blueberry and banana. They were soooo good. And "push ups". No, it wasn't a bra, it was a round cardboard tube with orange sherbet in it and you would push it up above the cardboard as you ate it. Yum.
And those big wads of Bazooka bubble gum that we'd get off the ice cream truck when it came around. (which would get stuck in your hair if you forgot to spit it out at night.) :0!
It has been many years since I wore penny loafers. or saddle shoes.
I don't know if you can still get those cinnamon squares on a stick, yummy! Black cows! cow-hi
When was the last time anyone rode across the pasture in the back of grandpas pickup to the creek to swim? :moon:
I remember lying in the back of the car (under the back glass) to sleep (or make faces) on long trips. :~)

I remember lying in the back of the car (under the back glass) to sleep (or make faces) on long trips.
I remember doing that. Riding in the way back of a station wagon with a friend was so much fun! Before seatbelts. :) Now, I can't imagine feeling comfortable in a car without a seatbelt on.
So many things that come to mind for this thread are edible. I also remember the push-ups that CathyA mentioned. I actually miss those. They had a particular flavor that was much different from sherbet from a carton. Carnation malts, in a paper cup, eaten with a small, flat wooden spoon at UCLA basketball games or Dodger baseball games. Fun Dips from the ice cream man. Disgusting candy, I mean, we knew that even then, but it was fun!
It's been quite a long time since I trick-or-treated. Wow, I used to love that. Although, half the fun of it as a kid was being able to roam the neighborhood, sans parents, for hours. That is definitely a thing of the past. Hmm, maybe I need to find some kids to chaperone this year :-)~

It's been a long time since I've held a frog, toad, salamander or caterpiller, or even seen one. When I was a kid my life pretty much revolved around hunting for those things, and it seemed like it wasn't that hard to find them. But I haven't seen a caterpiller or toad in ages, probably because I'm not out there looking for them all the time.
I haven't had a cold in years (like since I was a child) and got one a few weeks ago. The cold gave me hankering for some Rice Krispy Treats (which I haven't had in years) so I made up a batch and ate them all up!
CathyA. Wonderful things!!! Push-ups, yes! I totally remember those!!!!! They were one of my favourite frozen treats. Would have never remembered them had you not mentioned them. And Bazooka Bubble Gum! We'd chew it till our jaws ached!
Sissy. Great stuff!!! Oh yes, of yes, I too remember riding on the back sill (under rear window) of aunties and uncles car. No rules/laws back then.
Treehugger. Super duper!!! Re: riding without seat belts, etc, I also remember riding in uncle and aunts VW Bug, right in the very back, in the rumble area! I haven't done that in 40 years!!!
Kathy WI. I handled caterpillars occasionally as a kid, but nothing else! Been so many years...
Jania. Reaching out to gently rub your shoulder in hopes of acquiring a little of your good fortune related to never getting sick. Oh, I want some of that so bad!
Speaking of no seat belts.........I remember my mom always reaching out to hold me back when she drove and I was sitting next to her (from flying into the windshield). When My kids were little, for a second, I thought "why don't I do that??".....then I remembered the seatbelts they were wearing.
I think seatbelts came around l961.
I also remember big old cars back then. some of them had such beautiful steering wheels. And remember that rope in across the front seat in the back. I guess you were supposed to hold onto that in a head-on crash. haha
I remember catching lightening bugs in the dark and tearing their lights off and wearing them like a ring. (I'M SO SORRY LITTLE BUGS!!!).
We used to go to the drive in, and my parents would take a canning jar for us to pee in. hahahahaha I don't do that any more. lol!
Remember when pills came in little boxes?
I guess I'm turning this into a "remember when" thing. I hope that's okay.

Farina! Back when I was a teen and in braces, the appointments when they were tightened made my teeth ache and something soft like Farina was the perfect meal.
Last year I started eating it again (just had some tonight too) and gosh I really missed it. I add lots of sugar and cinnamon, and have to make some valleys for the milk to flow through. My great aunt used to make it for me but she was a lousy cook and hers was a solid mass. My mom made hers creamier and I thought it was wrong--shouldn't I have to break it off in chunks with my spoon?
CathyA. One thing about my thread topics... I always welcome and am open to any/all entries! :) Adding a twist to thread topics creates interest, and that's a good thing, and as far as I'm concerned, "remember when" works well with this thread! Ties in perfectly.
Re: drive-ins, I haven't been to a drive-in since the early 80's! It would be interesting to do a little research in relation to how many (if any) drive-ins still exist. As kids mom would toss a couple of comforters/pillows into the back of the car in addition to a few snacks/drinks, and off we'd go. None of us kids ever managed to stay-up right to the end. We always arrived home fast asleep!
Pony mom. I've never had Farina Cereal, ever. I imagine it's very similar to cream of wheat? Well, that just jogged my memory as to something else I haven't had in decades, that being- Sunny Boy Cereal! Gosh that was a hardy breakfast cereal, and tasty too. If I remember correctly, we used to add a little white sugar to it before eating. Maybe even a little milk, too.
Mrs-M there is a drive-in in my small city. I took my kids last summer.
I haven't had liver and onions for a long, long time. Come to think of it, even when I was a kid, the dog got most of it.:|(
I haven't worn saddle shoes since I was eight, and won't again, unless someone shoves them on my dead feet. >:(
I haven't caught crawdads since I was a kid, or skinny-dipped, or spent a whole weekend reading all 10 of my library books. I may do that one again, though.
Fawn. Wow! There are still drive-ins today. I had a sneaking suspicion there would be one or two still alive and hiding, so this is happy news. How lucky you are! I'd still go if we had one. (DH thinks I'm crazy). Oh well, different strokes for different folks...
I haven't had liver and onions in decades! Makes my mouth water just thinking about it!!! I can smell it now, that subtle hint of black pepper mixed with the sweet smell of onions. A heavenly combination it is...

We have a drive-in in the next town over. It's a Flea Market on the weekends (days) and a drive-in at night. I've never been to this one (but I remember seeing Zorro movies in a drive-in as a kid), but then we never go to the movie theater, either.
Kara
I'm surprised (to say the least) at how many drive-ins are still in operation, at least in the US. I would have never guessed... Now I'm interested in doing a little research (related to Canada) in hopes of finding any that are still operating.
The part I loved most about drive-ins when I was a teen, was mingling with everybody. You never knew who you were going to bump/run into! Had anyone asked me what the movies were about that I went to, I would have had to answer, "I don't know", because we all spent more time standing around outside talking with one another than we did watching.
