View Full Version : Do you have aches that are like a barometer?
I have a muscle on my shoulder that can predict a change in weather before I hear it on the evening news! :laff:
My arthritis in my fingers use to do it too, but I have not experienced any pain of late - but that is for another thread.
Do you experience this barometer effect?!
Oh, yes. And there's a good reason for it. Back in 2003 I got a back injury at work and was off for nine months on Workers' Comp. For roughly the first six months I went to physical therapy three times a week and during a long, wet, cold spell in the winter I asked my P.T. why my back felt so much better when I've heard that kind of weather should have made me ache. He said the aches and pains come from changes in barometric pressure that occur when the weather changes, not from any particular type of weather.
I haven't had any problems with my back for a while, but I did develop tendonitis from daily use of a computer in a very non-ergonomic environment, and it flares up whenever there's an abrupt change in the weather. That condition has much improved now that I'm retired and can arrange my workspace more comfortably, but I do still get achy when the weather changes.

A sinus headache will predict a weather change for me. Interestingly, when my brother was 9, he used to say 'it's going to rain' and shortly thereafter it would rain. He said this several times and was right each time. When asked how he knew he said his knees hurt.
Not yet! :) But to help make you feel better, Greg44, I still feel old (older) more days than not. Seems the days of me feeling young and vibrant run few and far between lately. Guess what I'm saying is, my day is a coming! :laff:
My right collar bone - broke it when a horse fell over backwards on top of me on a slick hillside of rocks back in '77 - always tells me when stormy or really bone chilling cold weather is coming.
My knees that I ruined by being a cave guide and walking 4 miles of stairs a day from '87-'90 - still tell me when rain is coming.
I get headaches when a front is coming.
I also have days (usually rainy) when my fibromyalgia really flares up and I am so fatigued too. I was getting PT after I had knee surgery a few years back and I had done my exercises religiously. But it was raining out and I could barely move at the appointment. The physical therapist got a bit miffed with me, like I just wasn't trying hard enough. It really irked me.
My knee surgeon, on the other hand, was very familiar with the effects of weather fronts. He said that after he had had open heart surgery and was recovered, he was playing golf. A front moved in quickly and he began to feel chest pains/pressure. He thought he might be having a heart attack. But as soon as the front moved on, all his pressure went away.
I think we are much more affected by air pressure/fronts that we appreciate. After all, we are children of the universe. :)
Agh, yes!! Bursitis in my left hip is a good indicator that the weather is going to change.
Wasn't this stuff called "rheumatism" in the old days?

My joints ache with barometric pressure changes too. The changes in an airplane cabin do it to me as well. Sometimes before a storm I'll start sneezing a lot, maybe due to mold/tree pollen being blown around.

Yes, I have a meteorologist in my sinuses!
I also find myself eating a lot more when it starts getting colder out.
When there is a barometric change coming, many times I get a headache.

Yes!! I get pain with each seasonal change, and with changes in the weather as well. Today is cold, windy and rainy. It is really not a good day. And it isn't just in one place, it's all over.

I have Lupus/RA and when the weather is changing I ache all over, becoming much stiffer than usual, plus I get terrible pressure in my sinuses which usually results in a terrible headache. On those kind of days I don't even want to get out of bed.... :help:
