View Full Version : Muzak
I wondered last night what twisted type of person puts together store Muzak sets. I ran into Walgreen's for something and Gene Autry's "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer" was playing. It was immediately followed by Jethro Tull's "Bungle in the Jungle."
C'mon, man! That's just not right!
Some stores have really good Muzak, my local Safeway for example. Others not so much and I can't wait to get the heck out of there. I can't remember when all this Muzak started. It must be a real science, somehow, to decide what to play.

My supermarket plays "real" music instead of Muzak, and its interesting to hear the different selections depending on day of the week and time of day. Sometimes its stuff that might appeal to my mother, other times general pop music, and once in a while I'll hear something a little more off the beaten path that doesn't appeal to all. Sometimes I go in there and hear 80's disco/pop and think "gee all the people my age must shop during this time period" :laff:
Found this interesting article on Muzak: http://serendip.brynmawr.edu/exchange/node/2055

I hate, Hate, HATE muzak!
It drives my family wild when I start to walk into a shop, hear the dreaded muzak... and immediately turn on my heel and walk out!
I know if I had to work in a place with piped music (of any type) I'd end up doing something serious to someone/something!
Call me stupid, really, it's OK, but this is the first time I've ever heard of "muzak". Anyhow, I love muzak! It has to be good though, but muzak (when it's the right stuff) relaxes me and calms me. Not too loud, and I prefer classic elevator selections over all.

boss mare, I would hate muzak at the dentist- it's already worse than having teeth pulled, lol. My dental office plays a great selection of classic rock, swing, jazz, and big band. Nice, engaging yet relaxing. Except at Christmas, when all bets are off. It's all owned and programmed by the head dentist. OTOH, they have BIG flat-screens mounted at almost ceiling height in EVERY. SINGLE. CUBICLE. And they are all tuned to "all tooth TV", showing perfectly good teeth bleached to dazzling whiteness, really bad teeth being capped to death, receding gums, root canals - gaaaahhhh! It's almost WORSE than MUZAK! Thank goodness I need glasses - I take them off and it all turns to pink and white mush, lol.
Ah, MrsM, on MUZAK we will have to disagree! Especially the elevator music. Kiss and Ozzy Osborne should NEVER be played in 'lite' versions, lol.

I'll take muzak ANYTIME over Fox News, which is often blaring in businesses, restaurants, doctors' offices, etc. I've been thinking of one of those Iphone remotes that you can have in your pocket to achieve blessed silence with no one knowing that you've created it. Almost a good enough reason to get an Iphone...... ;-)
