So, I finally caved in and got a cell phone. I feel so weak. ;)

Oh, not really. I got a Tracphone phone (pay as you go) but already it is a PITA to haul around. Mama Mia, I don't want my life complicated. At home, and at work, it resides in my backpack.

Here are my routines when away from home:

If I go out with DH I don't take anything with me since my escort has his money, his cell phone, his keys.

If I am running around gardening I take only car keys and when I get to my gardening destination there is always a place to put keys.

When I am shopping, alone (without DH) I take car keys and billfold. I can stick car keys in my waistband (I seldom have pockets) and carry the billfold, leaving one hand free.

In order to truly utilize the phone for emergencies as intended, I do need to take it with me more often. But where to put the bloody thing when I am away from home?

Probably solutions are:
*A device to hold cell phone around my neck
* More clothes with pockets
*Some kind of around my waist elastic thingie

Throw out suggestions, please.

This may be TMI, but when my bff has no pockets or will be gardening or active such that the phone might fall from the pocket, she tucks it in her bra. She said she not only never misses a call, but also gets a thrill when the phone rings. ;)

I have to 2nd that! My phone rides in my bra quite often. By the time I've got my credit card size wallet in one pocket and keys in the other the phone has to go somewhere else.

Seldom wear a bra BUT I do wear tanks with bra shelves--sometimes. This is an answer for sometimes.

But when gardening, ummm, no constricting clothing, please.

I just replaced my old cell with a smaller one, and keep it in my pants pocket. For some reason, I never had the old one on me so I missed lots of calls.

I never know where my cell phone is. I put it in my purse when I go out, and then it languishes there for days until I need the purse again. If I take it out, it stays wherever it first lands until I need it--which could be weeks. I feel your pain.

I'd suggest more clothes with pockets. Of course, it's a pet peeve of mine that men can find bathing suits with pockets, and it's incredibly difficult to find men's trousers without pockets, but pockets in women's clothing are not only completely optional, but very hard to find, except in jeans. Drives me nuts.

You could also look for a cell phone holder that has an attached key ring. That way, the keys and cell phone would always be together. You could tuck the cell phone part inside your waistband and let the keys hang outside.

If you will only be using the cell phone for emergencies away from home, can you store it in your car somewhere safe? To make this really work, I'd suggest getting a car cell phone charger, so you wouldn't have to take the phone inside for charging and then forget it the next time you leave.

I too have a tracfone that I only use when I am out so am not attached to it constantly as so many seem to be. I usually have a tote bag with me so I just throw it in there.

You can get cell phone holders with belt clips. I would leave it at home when gardening though since even the belt clips might be challenged by gardening.

Why not just leave it in the car, glove compartment or such?

Last year for my close girlfriends, I made everyone cell phone purses. They are about as big an an index card and have 2 pockets.http://www.quiltsmart.com/khxc/index.php?app=ccp0&ns=prodshow&ref=fun_cellbag

I use mine for holding my ipod touch when travelling, great on the hotel treadmill and I can throw my hotel room key in there too.

The cold/heat a cell phone is exposed to in a car is BAD for the battery.

I wondered about that. And here in FL, the damp. My cell is with me at all times. If the realtor calls to say someone wants to see my condo, I want to be able to immediately say Yes! show it! If a friend needs something I want to be able to respond from wherever I am. When I'm shopping I like to be able to dial the toll free # on the label and find out if the "natural flavor" is MSG or not. If I need help, there's the phone. I really don't know how I managed when I used to have to go home to use a phone - seems so awkward now. I'm so glad to be rid of the landline with its incessant telemarketers and limited range of use.

I had to buy a new fannypack as I need spots for my keys, CC's, wallet, pen, cellphone, small knife, lipgloss, area for receipts, spare batteries for my hearing aids, etc. These fannypacks with extra pockets and a cellphone sleeve are few and far between these days, it seems. It sits on my shoulder like a purse or around my waist when I need my hands free.

I ended going to a discount store and found one that had been marked down to $5 and then the cash register said $3 and I am so pleased with the fannypack and my cellphone is always handy to be used as a calculator or phone.

What about the cell-phone holders that clip on to a belt or waistband?

It wouldn't work for a dress without pockets unless you clipped it at your neck.

There are nice waist packs that look more like small purses at Megellans, some made by Packsafe so the part around your waist is cable that can't be cut by a pickpocket type thief. These are large enough for a phone, small wallet and a small bit more. I got one for the times I don't have pockets and don't want to have my backpack with me here in Honduras. It is small enough that most stores and places that make you check large purses and packages don't make me check it, which is the key for me down here.

pocket and if no pockets the bra. You can feel it if it is on "vibrate." Not always so in the pockets.

Woo Hoo! That is what I am looking for...vibrating bras!;)

Some of us don't have enough 'bra' to hold a cell phone without it being the largest 'lump' up there. sigh.

FYI - (for goddess-sakes don't put your cell phone near your ta-tas!)
eta: or any other tender parts!
Good Housekeeping (not exactly a radical) says the latest long-term (10 year use) data shows cell phone increase cancer risk: http://www.thedailygreen.com/environmental-news/latest/cell-phone-radiation-47100901

The FTC says radiation blockers are a scam: http://ftc.gov/opa/2011/06/cellphone.shtm

See the phones with lowest radiation output: http://www.ewg.org/cellphone-radiation

Use your speakerphone, don't carry your cell phone near your body!

razz and others: I don't know WHY I didn't think of a basic fanny pack. doh. That's probably the ticket.

You need "The CellBand". "The CellBand" is a wrist sports band converted to hold small devices. They make two models. One holds all kinds of small devices, and another that just holds smart phones. They are cheap $6.99 and $7.99. Also, you can buy at wholesale from $1.50-2.00 depending on how much you want. Just put "CellBand" in the goggle search field.

Well, here's a update from the OP, me:

I don't carry this cell phone around because it's just too much trouble. I can't even remember to charge it, but I'm going to try to do better at that.

But The Cellband sounds like a winner.
