:0!:0!So during yesterday's move to a new server I was freaking out!:0!:0!

Tee hee. :laff:

Can I put in a gentle request for a warning next time? Or did I just miss it?

I was kind of shocked too because we've always had a warning in the past. Late last evening I decided to type in simplelivingforum.net on the browser instead of clicking on my saved links and it worked.

I don't think it was really a server move. I contacted rozie about it and my understanding is that is was some kind of technical snafu. I assume it was not planned. Perhaps a web administrator will comment.

In the past Wampler didn't warn this community during the first big shutdown of the last web site. It was down for days and he seemed surprised when participants were annoyed by that and vocal about it. After that experience there was always a warning.

I have to admit, my first thought yesterday was that as we approached the end of our first year, maybe someone forgot to pay the bill for the second.

It's much more likely though, that there was a problem on the host's server which caused all the sites on that server to be unavailable. My only disappointment is that with over a dozen administrators, there's not much administering, or communication, going on. It's like there's no sense of ownership.

As a volunteer mod I'm not privy to the technical side (by choice) so my reaction was pretty much in line with fidgiegirl's. Glad to see the kinks got ironed out and we're together again today.

Alan's post does offer the opportunity to segue to an important topic. There are real costs associated with the operation of these forums that are borne by the New Road Map Foundation. Whew, I freaked out too. Then I just figured I missed a warning. But it did help me to realize how much I do depend on this community...where's that "donate" button again?

Yeah, I kind of freaked out myself........and echo Gregg's comment about all of us who are able to hit that donate button and make sure our forum stays healthy and in the black. I don't know what this glitch was, not being in the Administrative loop anymore myself, but am glad to get on today and see things are back to normal.

So.......the DONATE button is orange, is located just above and on the left side of page, just above the forums/threads.......maybe we get so used to seeing it that it just disappears from our mind, but it's there.......

Yeah, I know, LC....was just making a joke....I actually greatly appreciate the easy availability of the button and it has prompted me to remember to donate. Thanks, though...hard to see people laughing via email!

I was caught by surprise as well -- and was very glad to see things back to normal.

Off to make my annual donation!

My heart palpitated for a while, too, particularly because I am aware (as are the rest of us) that we aren't exactly meeting the financial requirements to maintain and secure a viable future for ourselves (under the shield of our new home, NRMF) at the rate we are going. More support is definitely needed.

This combined with the "where are they now thread" have lit a fire under me to get more involved (donating right are I post). These boards have meant a lot to me for many years and despite not speaking up very often I would be very sad to see them go!

It indeed would be very strange to suddenly lose you all! When I first saw the notice about the server, I tried to think of anyone I even had email addresses for. I think I have 2. I guess that's the chance we take with cyber friends/acquaintances. Its weird to think that all of a sudden we could lose them all. I think I need a xanax.

I have, some, 60 plus email addresses (contacts) of members on record (just in case). My way of thinking is, if (for some reason) we lost this home, I could go to work contacting all those on file, and hopefully, be able to successfully contact at least (at best), a healthy 75%, and, with any luck, the ones I successfully reached would also have a comprehensive list of contacts to add. Between all of us, I like to think a wonderful group could once again be resurrected. That's my story.

I was pretty distressed too, and point well taken. I'm off to make a donation!

Perhaps one of the people in the know might provide an update on how we're doing financially? I made a donation within the past week or so, but I'm more than willing to cough up a bit more if necessary.

The NRM board is meeting at the end of this week. I'll ask Rozie for a financial update and post it when I can (unless she does it first).

Thanks! If I remember from earlier in the year, we just made our expenses.

I am glad too to see things up and running like normal. Was quite a bit of a surprise to to see the message about the server. Good that we are still around....I will be making my donation in February when my taxes come back, hope we are doing ok financially. Rob

Sorry, Tradd - I cleaned out some messages and you should be able to message me now. But it might be easier/quicker if you wrote directly to Helen or Rozie as they will have more direct access to the NRM side of things and should be able to direct your donation to the correct place.

Hmm, I assumed that the donate now button on the forums sent the money directly to this part of the organization. I assumed I was donating to keep the boards up and running. Tradd, maybe when you find out how to make sure, you could post and let us know? thanks...

Thanks, Ilhamo, I sent a PM to Rozie after seeing her new post about donations.

I missed all the shut down hubbub (guess that's what happens when you are off line for almost a week) but I am happy to see things are still running . Also very glad to see that Rozie posted an actual snail mail address on another thread where we can send donations for us internet-challenged cave-people. Thanks!
