In my search for books on frugality I came across Linda Gray's Self-Sufficiency: Herbs and Spices. It tells in plain language how to grow everyday things like bay leaves, oregano, basil... in a garden, on the porch or in the house, and what they're useful for once grown, plus natural ways to protect them from pests. Once I get moved I intend to set up some kind of roling platform or rack and grow some nice herbs. They cost so much at the store, it'll be well worth a little indoor gardening.

Reader99: In our perennial herb garden, we grow oregano, chives, tarragon and sage. They are as easy to grow as dandelions. We grow basil, rosemary and parsley in our annual tomato/vegetable patch and have had good luck with them as well, although the basil sometimes isn't as vigorous as we would like. I think growing your own herbs is a worthwhile endeavor. Happy Gardening!

I started my gardening adventures many many years ago with herbs, as I had almost no space, and you could get a lot of usuable product in a small space with herbs. In addition to the freshness of home grown, I like that I can just pick what I actually need. Supermarket bundles always have more than I can use before they decay.
