View Full Version : Crying Baby/Nursing Issue--Update

Just wanted to give a quick update to those of you who so graciously encouraged me when I was dealing with a colicky baby that couldn't quite seem to get the hang of nursing.

I did push through with the breastfeeding. I intended to supplement with formula some of the time, but my daughter hated it. She screamed and screamed and wouldn't take it. I don't think formula is a bad thing at all, but it just wasn't working for us. She wanted to nurse, so I kept nursing. She was still crying constantly and nursing every hour--pulling and twisting and biting. Oh, and she didn't sleep. At all. Ever. (well, that is how it seemed, anyway).

Then, when she turned four months old, she just stopped. It was so weird. It was like all of a sudden, something clicked and she just figured out how to nurse. And the crying stopped. She is so happy now--she is a like a completely different baby!!!

Oh, she still eats often--maybe every 2 and a half hours or so. She still cries sometimes and gets fussy, and wakes up to eat maybe twice a night. But it is nowhere near as bad as it used to be. I'm not sure what changed, but it makes me so happy that she is happy.

Anyway, thanks to those of you who commented on that thread. That was a very, very difficult time for me. I was so exhausted and overwhelmed. I appreciated the advice, the kind words, and, most of all, the encouragement. I was very comforted by the "I've been there, and it gets better" comments. :-)

Awesome.

I suspect, but don't know, that this was a "cranial osteo" issue. That is, during birth, a lot of pressure is put on the head (this is whether there is C-section or vaginal birth). This can get a head "out of joint" and cause a lot of pain -- that certain holding positions can make more difficult. Feeding -- breast or bottle -- can be painful, and bottle feeding even moreso than breast (depending, sometimes vice-versa).

Sometimes, this sorts itself in several months as the baby turns her head and rolls and such in her sleep, and other times, osteopathy and cranio-sacral therapy can really help.

Sounds like this might have been part of the equation, because once it is sorted, everyone goes "it's like a totally different baby." :) I'm so glad that it worked itself out -- no matter what it might have been.
