... Has a heater in the motor that turns the ice out, so it can operate at freezing temps. What a $$ waste!

I think I read somewhere that breaking water lines, the ones going to ice makers, are one of the biggest household insurance payouts.

I say, outlaw the stupid things. Who needs 'em.

We are not good enough consumers to buy refrigerators that have them One time our friend wanted to come over here and put in a water line as a surprise for DH. He was recommending some sort of attachment device that you retrofit a 'fridge with. I thought that was just weird. I mean, that is a little TOO much in our business. I politely declined. He's a bit of a maniac anyway.

I'm with ya. Stoopid. That and garbage disposals. Cannot wait to pull that sucker, and re-plumb the pipes back against the wall, so I can install a decently deep... no, obscenely deep kitchen sink, into which I can place my biggest stock pot, skillet & bread bowl.

Well... thanks for the therapy moment!

Our village's water system's top 3 water overage causes are:

- running toilets
- broken hose bibs
- broken lines to refrigerators and washing machines

We went out of our way to get a fridge without an ice maker, since we had heard they were the #1 reason for service/repair of fridges. I'm not too talented in the kitchen, but I can make ice cubes with the best of 'em!

I've never had an auto ice maker but I do like my garbage disposal (which I also never had until 3 years ago).

We just replaced our refrigerator with one that does not have an ice maker. Its utility usage was below the lowest amount on the Energy Star rating. $44 a year (and it is a big french door one). When we took out the old one, it was noted that the water pipe was broken. Good thing we had turned it off years ago.

I love the fact that the door also has an alarm when it is open for a minute. A benefit we did not even think of.

We have a fridge with in-door water dispenser and ice-maker. We didn't choose this model, but Sears delivered it by mistake, so we kept it when they offered us the choice (it's also bigger than the one we paid for).

We enjoyed the convenience of cold water and ice dispenser for about a year, but then the water line broke and there was a great deal of leakage before we realized it. We decided not to fix it, so now, we just have a nice, big fridge, with no water or ice dispenser. I wouldn't spend the money on one, that's for sure.

I agree, the door alarm is a nice feature, and also one I would have never thought to pay money for. I do really love the freezer on bottom, 2 upper doors style and would definitely choose that again.

Years ago we got a refrigerator with an ice maker and the water line broke. We had just installed Pergo flooring in the living room next to the kitchen. It was destroyed. Our insurance cancelled us. We got rid of the refrigerator and will never have another one with an ice maker or any water going to it.

Our new one is an LG. Where we bought it said it was the best seller, Consumer Reports noted it was great (first thing we checked), and the seller had 169 on order.

As I said, I love it. note: Magnets will not stick to it so it will be "cleaner" on look over time.
