we have a big 17 lb boy called Billy. He always wants to be where we are. He lies on the kitchen floor when I am cooking and cleaning. I just counted 18 times this morning that I stepped over him.

Amazing he doesn't get his legs broken. But this is his mission in life, to be underfoot. How about yours?

LOL. The first thing I did this morning was accidentally step on my cat's tail.

Regarding cats & their various schemes...

In my house, I am more likely to step over my dogs (2 large greyhounds) than my cats. The cats (probably because of the dogs) don't sleep on the floor much. Greyhounds prefer the softest suface available, though, so they are usually on their beds, our bed, or the couch, instead of the plain old hard floor.

Rarely. Purple Kitty just isn't a get-in-the-way cat. She also likes to be up higher, so you will often find her sleeping on a chair or the sofa. She also isn't a glutton for attention. Not to say she doesn't have some regard for us, but she isn't dependent on humans for attention.

My cat is an outside only cat that only in the coldest of coldest of cold weather will she venture indoors. To come within stepping distance of her would take some real work. But we're making progress, the other day she actually let me hold her (and I counted 32 seconds). I've had her for 5 years now so at this rate I could maybe trip over her in another 4 years.

Your cats are laughing at how well they have you so trained to simply step over them rather than expecting them to move =)
Do you also find yourself sitting in that other chair in the living room rather than disturb them sleeping on the sofa? Yup. A true cat household :)
Scritches to your cats, I really miss mine.

A true cat household :) Of course - can't sit there, the cats are asleep in that chair. Not to mention the positions I have to get in to sleep sometimes so I don't disturb them at night!

Kally, too many times to count X 2. We have two boys and they are underfoot when awake. Yes, we do step over them - when we're not stumbling over them after quick dashes in front of us because they think we are going to do something wonderful and don't want to miss out!

Our cats and one of our dogs seem to feel that they have outgrown the "step over" stage and are actively trying to trip me. One cat and one dog both will sit still as I approach, then will turn perpendicularly across my path at the last second. They try to disguise these assassination attempts by looking interested in where I am going, but I know what they are up to. The new kitty hasn't learned this trick yet, but she likes to zoom from the side and run between my feet as I walk. Sometimes I trip and sometimes she ends up flying across the floor, so obviously her technique needs a little work. Our other dog just follows me around looking innocent, but I think it's highly possible that she's the one who tells the others when to strike... It's a good thing they are all so darned cute! :)

You all had me chuckling at work today! I must disguise my laughter since I should be working on financials or something equally as dry.

I am part of a dog household, but many similarities exist. I have to sleep in contorted positions. If one should attempt to relocate a dog in the night, she will make these disgruntled noises - it's comical.

I think my dogs are out to get me, too.

The worst is when you mention a completely innocent word, and find a stampede of dogs have arrived at your feet. Last night, it was "treat", and the day before I said "cookie". Husby is a big softy, and says I can't ignore them hearing a word out of context and must give them a cookie or a treat. I swear, if trained properly, these dogs would be a huge benefit to home security with their hearing ability.

I have to say that the only chair Purple Kitty sleeps in that I sometimes use is the computer chair, and sometimes a kitchen chair. She will sleep at the very end of the couch, and rarely sleeps with me, unless it is very cold and she wants to lay on my warm mattress cover. So, it is not often that we even have to move her. She always has food and water available, so there are no "kitty stampedes" to the kitchen, and she really doesn't care to eat people food, even though I have tried to spoil her that way. I'm not always sure she is a cat, but I don't know what else she would be.
On another note, I did once have a dog that learned to spell. First she grasped the concept of the word "out", and got very excited when she heard it. Then we spelled it o-u-t until she figured that out, then t-u-o, then u-o-t. Finally we gave up. I also had a dog who could open the fridge door, so I had to put velcro straps on it because he didn't close it. We finally bought a side-by-side, and he couldn't open that.

No cats anymore but I sat on them more often than stepped over them. They were usually up on something and routinely wherever I was about to sit. Nowadays I step over and trip over my dogs regularly.
