View Full Version : What to do with an old down comforter?
I have an old down comforter that is ready to be either retired or repurposed -- the down is crammed into the corners, the middle is bare. I thought I might pull out the down and either sew it into a pillow or add it to another old down comforter to fill it out. Anyone have any experience doing something like that? Any suggestions for other ways to repurpose?
I've thought about dividing one using a double needle and very short stitch into rectangles the right size to line a dog or cat bed and then cutting them apart. The idea of making pillows appeals to me as well.
I second Jane's, pillow making idea! Stuffing an older existing comforter to pad-it-up sounds great, too! That's the fun part about re-purposing and having a general sense of know-how to create things/stuff. Anything goes!
You could also make a great pair of down-filled slippers, or a winter hat, or a pair of down-mitts.
I'd let the pets have it. Old down is all broken up into unfluffy bits and if you stuff a bunch of it into a pillow it is hard and uncomfortable. (BTDT) Plus it probably has collected dust mites.
