View Full Version : computer type question
Well, this might not be strictly a computer question. When I take pictures and load them in my computer, at the bottom of the screen it gives all sorts of stats (most of which i don't know 'nuttin about) there is a place to put in tags. Why would I want to do that? Is it for/if I post my pictures on an internet photo site someone could find my image through these tags? I guess what I'm asking is, are these tags somehow 'embedded' into/on the photo? Am I making any sense?
The stats you see are taken from your camera and are embedded onto the pictures. Applying tags make them easier to find on your computer.
Let's say you you tag them as 'Birthday Party', you can then conduct a search to find all photos on your computer with that tag. Here's a video explaining how to do it.

I don't think those tags are indexed on internet sites, just the file name.
OH, ok, thanks Alan. :thankyou:
A similair computer photo question. When I want to put a photo in a thread here I first need to create an album here, then upload a photo in the album from my computer and then use the BB code to put it in a thread. When I delete the photo from the album (or delete the album) the photo in the thread get deleted also. Alan explained to me already why this is but if I used a photo sharing site to store my photos can I then put them in a thread directly and by-pass having to put them in an album? How do the photo sharing sites work and where do you get them? Is there a fee or are they free? I don't really like putting thread-specific photos in the albums here.
Eta: trying to figure out a way to post pics directly from my computer to threads without using albums but won't work. try again.
OK I just accidentally deleted them. Oh well, no way so will need a photo sharing site. Suggestions?
Spartana. There are three main selections (options) related to SL Album picture storage.
Public albums, which can be viewed by anyone.
Private albums, which can only be viewed by site staff (moderators, administrators) and your Friends and Contacts.
Profile albums, which is viewable only by you. However, you can use the images to customize your public profile.
My album is set on "Profile", yet I can utilize any pictures I like (in my album), at any time, in any thread topic. All you have to do is select which photo you'd like to post in a thread (from your SL Album), and left-click on it, then copy the BB Code found at the very bottom.
Next, after typing in whatever information within the body of the reply or entry you are posting, select this icon http://www.simplelivingforum.net/images/editor/insertimage.png. Using the BB Code you selected (right-clicked, saved), enter (apply) the BB Code into that icon box. Done. Click on "Submit Reply". Picture will now be posted within the context of your typed entry.
.....if I used a photo sharing site to store my photos can I then put them in a thread directly and by-pass having to put them in an album?
Yes you can. Putting them into an album here is just putting them into an accessible site on the internet. You do the same thing by putting them on a photo sharing site. When you want to post one or more into a post here, just click on the icon Mrs M so graciously posted and enter the path to the photo into the box. Should be something like www.yourphotosharingsite.com/accountname/photoname.jpg (http://www.yourphotosharingsite.com/accountname/photoname.jpg)
How do the photo sharing sites work and where do you get them? Is there a fee
or are they free?
I really can't help you with that as I don't use any of those services. I have the luxury of my own webserver which resides in my basement. When I post a photo, I simply point the bbcode to my own server and hope I don't lose electricity, my router, my cable modem or my dynamic IP address when someone is trying to view it.
I have heard good things about Flickr and Picasa Web Albums. www.flickr.com (http://www.flickr.com) and www.picasa.google.com (http://www.picasa.google.com)
I suspect both have free accounts available.
Thanks for the info Mrs. M and Alan. When I get back on my own computer I'll try first doing the private profile for any photos I put online here and see how that works. Sounds easier for me then using a photo sharing site because I generally just e-mail individual photos to friends rather then have a bunch at one place for them to look at.

Alan, I really appreciate how helpful you are with tech stuff. You're always the first to jump in with smart & understandable explanations. This must be one of your superpowers! Anyway, thanks.
OK I just created a new "Private" album and wondered if anyone else could see it as it still shows up when I look at it.

Nope, I don't see it.
Nope, I don't see it.
Well it does have a semi-naked man on the it so I figured you wouldn't look to close for it....or would you ;-)!
Can't see a thing, Spartana. If you want even more privacy/control over picture exposure, choose the Profile Album setting.
