Or ones to stay away from? My mom's after many years died and I'm getting her a new one. She's in a small, carpeted, two bedroom apartment. And she'd need something not heavy to cart around.

When my mom started having trouble using her Kirby, we bought her an Oreck. Now she can't even use that, but we do, and it's really nice and light weight.

I love our Miele canister vac. We got a HEPA super filter one due to cat hair. It was pricey, though I got a floor model in a place I was temping, so got a discount. They can be tunes up and last a long time.

We recently picked up a Rumba. Can't get any lighter than that, and it works pretty well on multiple surfaces.

I agree--I got the entry level one, the Olympus, and I LOVE it. It's just so well designed and solid. Even the bags are high quality.

Dyson, Dyson, Dyson..
Did I say that I think the best vacuum cleaners are the Dyson range?!!!

Our next one will be a miele. It has an attachment for upholstery that is driven by air rather than a belt.

Our Shark started on fire the second time we used it. Might have been a fluke, but we steer clear of that brand now. LOL Our Bissell is nice but on the heavy side. We did buy a Bissell stick vac for quick jobs, and it is very nice. Lightweight and part of it comes off and is a dust buster, too.

Please keep the recommendations and testimonials coming. I am also in the market for a new vacuum, as I am just tired to death of the 18-year old heavy clunker of a Kirby. I want something more lightweight and I swear, I would clean upholstery and cobwebs more often if I had onboard attachments. New vacuum also must be able to suck the carpet right off the floor, as we have an adorable but seriously-shedding variety of "baby" in the house.

Miele here, it's lasted about 15 years and no problems yet and we pick up a lot of dog hair with it. I am allergic to many things and this vacuum is good for that.

Thank you Weston! Can't believe I forgot all about checking Consumer Reports. Will definitely head to the library next week to look at this issue of the magazine.
