View Full Version : Rag Rolling Hair

As I posted in an earlier thread, I am letting my hair grow out including bangs at the moment. I have VERY straight hair, so while this process is going on I thought I would experiment with a few things that are not permanent. Last night I tried something that I have heard my mother talk about - curling hair on rags! I looked this up on the web and apparently it is back in vogue and there were all kinds of info and videos on how to do it. So, jumping to the end results: This morning I have a 'fro! LOL! I think I will try again soon though and hopefully get the hang of bigger curls. In the meantime this isn't so bad, not kinky tight, so I have pulled it back with combs and it's okay. Has anyone else experimented with this?
Oh this so brings back memories of doing up my younger (7 yerss younger) sister hair on Sat. night so she would cute at Sun morning church,
Mom was always busy and tried from working so hard and this became my job and it was such fun to be the big sister.
Fast forward to my own daughter and loved doing hers too. If memory serves me bigger pieces of hair and longer hair made for bigger curls.

My grandmother used to do this to my hair when I was little - it made me feel so special.
I was little so I don't remember a lot about it though.
Although I've never experimented with it (my daughters the same), I am familiar with it. Love the tight curls it produces, and it's so frugal!
Yep, my GFs and I used to do it back in the day (the straight, middle-parted hair day) and I used rags on my DD's hair in the 90s too. It works, it's cheap. AND easy to sleep on the rags overnight, not like those torturous curlers used to be. And yes, the more hair you wrap with a rag, the larger the curl. The less, the curlier.

I did this the last time I had long hair. My hair is already curly but this is a good way to make sure the curls go the direction I want them to go. Now that my hair has grown out again I'll have to give it a try again. I've got a t-shirt that was headed to the rag box so I'll just cut some strips for this.

This is day 3 of the rag rolling experiment. My vote is: I like it. The first day it was too curly, second day a lot better, and today I have it pulled up with little curly wisps kind of escaping around my face. Lots of choices for someone with super straight hair! The next time I know to make bigger swatches and not roll so tightly and I think I will have the bigger, looser curls. And, unlike a perm, after shampooing tonight I will be straight again - if I choose!
That sounds like an interesting technique; I have no idea how you would do it? Is there a good site on-line? Even though I have curly hair, in the winter when there is a lack of humidity it grows out rather flat from the crown. I'm trying a clipping technique after I shower and put on curly hair goo (it helps hold the curl and keeps the halo of frizzies down). I zig-zag the part and clip each little section up a little bit to try and give it more volume at the top of the head. Then I have big loose curls that start forming just above my ears and then flow down. As my hair gets longer and in the summer when its humid, it gets pretty wild! I can't wait for the humidity (I know a lot of people would hate me for saying THAT)!
But I would like to try the rag technique as it sounds like it would be a little more controlled like a "do" instead of the hippie woolies look!
Woo-hoo, Sad Eyed Lady!
Thanks for the great links, Float On. Lots of info.
SiouzQ. If you do give it a go, post a follow-up. :)

Just google it and you will find directions plus some videos that actually show it being done. There are some on youtube I believe. Good luck and let us know how it goes for you.
Yes, I have had success with this too. For me, it is KEY to let the hair be mostly (80%) dry before I roll it up, or it is still wet when I unroll in the AM.
My hair is naturally curly, but this technique could create big loopy curls and not the tight spirals I usually have. It is always fun to have another "look" available.

I did a little loose rag rolling for a few hours this morning.

I am going to try this on my DD. Even the foam curlers we have are pretty uncomfortable because of the plastic pieces & braiding isn't working that well on her hair, since it isn't really long enough.
I did this in high school! Loved it. I could sleep on the rags & have curls for school the next day...
