View Full Version : okay where do you splurge?
Dh and i love to travel; camping, road trips, etc.
this year we decided to delve into our hard earned large savings and made plans to go to Hawaii; just the island of Kauai; its a big deal; the most we have ever spent on; but its a trip of a life time
where do you splurge; whats your passion that is worth the hard work you put into saving?
Cadbury Mini Eggs! OK, this isn't a big splurge but I do love these and get excited when they finally arrive.

LOL, both of the above! But it will be a while before we can do more than a long weekend here and there... we don't have much discretionary income, and our only debt is our home. Not much to cut out... except the Cadbury mini-eggs? We like the dark chocolate ones, and they're hard to find, so we don't spend a lot! ;) And we splurge by having chickens - the feed costs more than eggs, and we give away all the extra eggs we get. I know we could sell them, but Karma's important, and we like to share where we can. And I know we could feed them cheaper, but DH is in charge of chickens on his good days, and he simply WILL feed the mice, rats, birds, etc - if one has a feeder, it must be FILLED, after all.... grrr. *need to get SMALLER feeder!
Fruit, fruit, fruit. I love good fruit so we pick and freeze local berries and other local fruits, can homemade applesauce and splurge during the off season on those that are not available locally.
Splurge on Teaching Company courses and the simulcast HD Metopera plus live theatre. I can be fairly thrifty elsewhere but those are important and worth saving for.
BIG Cadbury Eggs!! The bigger the more yummy "egg white" you get!
My big splurge is also travel but I stick to low budget, but longer term, type travel. generally very long road trips with my dog(s), with a mix of tent camping, budget motels or off season vacation house rentals for longer stays. Hope to do the "grundgy backpacker around the world" thing someday too - stay at hostels, etc.. Did that before and loved travelling that way. I recently sold my house so I could travel full time.

Good coffee and chocolate. Eating out, especially interesting local places. Apple devices (you will get my iPad away from me when you rip it from my cold, dead fingers).

Seafood, concert tickets, and weekends in Portland.
Definitely food related things. Knowing healthy food is at the top of my list, helps me rest easy knowing I'm doing the best I can to hopefully make things even better.

Travelling.
This year, we have planned time on a Greek island, France, Italy and Portugal, and Cornwall - and, probably, a few weekends in London, Bath and Leamington Spa.

Good cheese, nuts, olive oil and white balsamic vinegar all bought at Greek import store between our house and our DDs. Cheaper than Trader Joe's and keeping it local.
Diamonds. I splurge on diamonds. I also, on rare occasion, splurge on a gorgeous piece of handmade or antique furniture. I derive many years of pleasure from both and figure they don't cost so much if I get to enjoy them for the rest of my days.

Soap at the farmer's market made locally. It is great for my itchy dry skin and for $5, a bar is quite pricey but yet an affordable splurge that says once in a while, I'm worth it.....Rob
:) the replies gave me the smile; isn't it funny i forgot the other splurges because i guess i don't splurge on anything but travel; but it never hit me until now; though i am cognitively challenged:)
dh splurges on healthy food for us; yes i am lucky; and food for himself;
i was going through our coin holder which had a bunch of pennies and i remarked to dh maybe we should turn these in for extra money for Hawaii:D
I like magazine and newspaper subscriptions. 2 newspapers weekly and 4 magazines monthly. It just feels so luxurious to have them come to me. I recycle them all and will probably phase them out as online stuff becomes equally compelling, but meantime I am like my mother, we just love a little sit down with tea and a maggie.

Well, I'll admit it, we are Trader Joe's geeks!
Just broke the bank there yesterday but hey it's the last time we'll be around a TJs for at least a year now that we're leaving California on Tuesday. TJs isn't in TX or Colorado yet, where we spend most of our time. You guys who have them near you are SO lucky!

HumboldtGurl: We have a TJ's a mile away from us that opened about two years ago and we've really been enjoying it. DH was given a few gift cards totalling $200, so we've supplemented our grocery budget with a lot of fun items from TJ's over the past couple of months.
