and I am so upset. She has been ill for about 5 days and back and forth to the vets. Antibiotics and anti nausea shots and more. Now the vet found a touch of jaundice, he says just a little bit.

So she is in overnight at the hospital and I feel so very very sad. She is only 3 years old and a real love. I trust the vet, but I feel guilty and responsible that she got so sick so fast.

We took her in the second day she was sick, but she just kept getting worse. I just feel so horribly horrible at the idea that she is suffering.

I hope they are able to help her quickly. We went through a very sad illness with our 5-year old cat last year; I still miss her. I didn't know until we went through it with her how quickly fatty liver disease can set in for cats - nausea/vomiting or not eating for just a few days can be quite serious. Hope your kitty's soon in the clear.

you know it will be a long night. I am letting the worst case scenario thoughts run away with me. How do you stay calm at a time like this? I just feel so bad for her.

kally that's too bad, I wonder what caused her to take sick so quickly? It is a great thing that you got her into the vet early.

I got her into the vet early, but the treatments weren;t working and she just got sicker and sicker. I feel she might not make it. I am so upset and I feel responsible and guilty for what she was suffering.

how have you other pet owners handled it when your pet was seriously ill. I am sick with worry.

Kally -
Remember you're doing the very best you know how with the knowledge you have. The vet's office is the best place for her to get better at this time. She won't be lonely because there are others there who are also not feeling well.
You've had her for a long enough time for her to know you are home to her. Being away for that time will not negate that and when she is better she will be soooo happy to be back home again :)

My 15 yo American cat had failing kidneys and new vet here in Japan took her for 5 days (gulp!) and when she returned she was in great condition and had learned 5 new meows!

Be sure to take care of yourself so you will be healthy when she returns. If you are really having a difficult time sleeping, I have on rare occasions taken a half a benedryl to help take the edge off so I can get some rest.

Keep us updated.

Sorry to hear about your cat. It is so hard. Went through that with my cat but he was 15 and had diabetes. Was horrible but must be much more difficult with such a young cat. You just don't expect illness like that when they are so young. Hoping tomorrow brings good news.

Kally... just one hour at a time is how I handled it. It was very difficult because the vets that she saw all talked as though she would definitely recover, even the last time we took her to emergency care when she was experiencing neurological effects of fatty liver disease. She died about 3 hours after that. It was a horrible 2 weeks and far more interventional medicine than I've ever been through with a pet. I felt guilty the entire time, not knowing if I was making the right decisions. I knew she was in pain, but the vets kept talking like she had a good chance of recovery. Live and learn.

Kally, I hope your kitty is feeling better. Has the vet given you any idea of what might be wrong?

I'm so sorry to hear about your kitty - sending good vibes to you both.

It is so hard when a pet is ill...I have had pets become sick and I am always fraught with worry, because they are like my furry children. Try not to blame yourself, it sounds like you have handled everything in the best possible way. It may very well likely be something completely treatable.

My cat went missing a few weeks ago. We put out fliers, checked the shelter, went to all the vets in town...nothing. I was sick with worry. Then one of my neighbors told me some dogs had killed cats in the neighborhood right around the same time he went missing. I was beside myself with grief and also with guilt. Then...13 days later the little rascal showed back up at the front door! So the worrying was all for nothing!

Best of luck to you and your precious kitty.

Kally, you have done your best for her, and it certainly isn't your fault the previous treatments didn't work. Here's a prayer that she will soon get better. Let us know.

I will go and see her today if I am allowed. I told the vet she wasn't eating or drinking, but when he saw her he felt she wasn't dehydrated and gave her a couple of shots. The the other night she came out of hiding and sat on the couch and let us pet her. She slept with me that night and purred.

But the whole idea of jaundice terrifies me. I am glad he said it was just a little touch, as if he caught it early. Her eyes weren't yellow or anythng.

Thanks for all your kind comments. It is insane how much we love them isn't it. I will let you know. Possily, in all my postings, even about my own health, I have never needed my friends here more - and I thank you.

There are many of us out here who have lived thru it with many pets. I think over 39 years, we have had 11 cats with 3 still with us. It is important to know the faint signs your own cat has to let you know things are not right. It is never easy to decide when to end a suffering life, and no matter how many times it has to be done, it is still an agonizing decision.

We just did it yesterday for a 19+ year old cat with cancer. We kept him going on painkiller (bupronex is a wonderful cat drug) and any thing he wanted to eat for a couple of months. But when he stopped eating and just was not right, my husband (his human) made the final decision. Maybe he could have made it a few more weeks but at what cost to the quality of his life? We will never know.

My husband had to decide with his mother to turn off life support on his father last year and both decisions were so very difficult.

sweetana - thanks for writing. It was the loveliest gift you could give your old cat - to go in peace. Good pet mommy and daddy.

I think we've all been through this Kally, and we know how painful it is. How old is your kitty? If you feel like she's not improving or even getting worse, I would just bring her home and love her for the time that she has left. I'm so sorry you have to go through this. (((hugs)))

I dropped by the vet's this morning. They will keep her another overnight. They said she ate something and she seemed cheerier. I will check back this afternoon. Thanks for all your good thoughts.

If she was 15 this would be hard, but is so much worse because she is still a baby. (to me)

Just wanted to see that repeated.

Best wishes to you, kally, and your darling cat. Please know that so many of us have been there before, and we get it. Also, re. the guilt, try to remember that cats are very good at hiding symptoms of illness, so sometimes there's just no way to tell that they need a vet's care until things have progressed. So, ease up on yourself, please. You are doing what's right for her now and that's what matters.

Sorry to hear about your furbaby, kally. We went through some serious medical stuff with my little five-year-old (Charlie) in December. It was so awful; I, too, felt guilty and was sick with worry. He was on the fence for about three days but did pull through.

Be kind to yourself. You have done everything right.

Praying for your kitty!

Oh, Kally, I sure hope she gets better and home soon! We too have had our share of cat tragedies, and we love our fur-babies very much. Eating is very encouraging. Sending best wishes from our kitties (and humans!) to you and yours.

I just gave her a cuddle at the vets. She is eating and her liver stats are getting good. One more night there and probably she can come home tomorrow. She acted like our own baby, kissing, cuddling, head butting and tail up, up and up.
Thanks for bearing with me over this horrible ordeal.

That's really good news Kally! Did the vet say what may have caused it?
Hopefully she'll be home soon!

he is not sure, but likely an infection that she got from killing a bird. She kills birds sometimes and never had this problem, but I guess it only takes on. That caused the fever and the not eating caused the jaundice I think. That is what we are guessing so far.

Happy Report that our baby has returned from what looked like the brink of death. She is hounding us to go outside, but maybe later tomorrow. We are a LOT poorer, but she got great care and medicine and she is only 3. I told her I would be seriously pissed off if she played in traffic.

What a horrible adventure for us and even worse for her. But it is all worth it to see our baby girl safe at home.

Yay!! Congrats... We love our furpeople!

I know this is a hot topic, and you've likely thought of it... it is possible to make her an indoor cat... I've done so with previously outside cats. Just a notion.

So glad she is home and seems to have forgotten much of this ordeal, to the point that she wants to go out and try it all over again! Maybe it is time to make her an indoor cat. Less exposure to possibility of illness and injury would seem to be a good thing.

I was just getting ready to ask the same thing. So much safer. I have two boys totally inside, they are both 8 now. My two previous cats (at separate times) were 17 and 15 when they passed - good long lives usually if you can keep them from danger.

I just don't see turning an outdoor cat into an indoor one. i guess we will take our chances. They are both happy outdoors and indoors, but thanks for the concern.

Just a note to say that all 11 of the cats we have had over 35 years have always been 100% inside cats. We dont have to worry about fleas, heartworm, traffic, diseased mice, etc. One is a former feral kitten born in our backyard.

We have an outside cat that was thrown out by neighbors who has lived in our backyard for many many years. His is not as great a life due to strays he fights with to keep them outside of his yard (he is neutered by the way), the wild animals like racoons, and the heat and cold. Thankfully our other neighbor is not bothered by him sleeping on her deck.

My rescued stray cat became an indoor cat and learned to love it. And no more late or sleepless nights for me, worrying where she is, dreading finding her dead in the gutter, or just taking off. While kitty is recovering is a good time to give it a try.

Just to add, my cat lived to nineteen!

Glad to hear she's doing well.
