View Full Version : Type & dash, type & dash, type & dash...
I had a laugh at myself late this afternoon while engrossing myself in the, another horrible high school shooting in Ohio, thread. One of those multitasking moments where I was occupied here, occupied with last minute kitchen stuff (supper, etc), and occupied with family affairs, all at the same time. A fine balancing act of sorts in order to pull it all together to make all work harmoniously with one another.
When my youngest two were babies, I regularly performed type & dash visits to the forum, and even now there are times that arise where I know I'm needed somewhere else in the house, yet given the opportunity, I'll push the envelope and dare myself to catch one more minute finishing up a reply to someone's thread topic, or just taking that one last snoop before sitting down for dinner with the family. Sometimes I get away with it, other times I'm caught red-handed! :laff:
Anyhow, thought it would be fun to mention, and in turn, hear from anyone else who practices my type & dash methodology.
I type and dash several times a day!
I can't count those type-and-dash moments that happen every day. And I don't have children or a spouse, just a rather demanding and regal cat and house that I suspect now owns ME.
Multi-tasking doesn't work according to all reports. I just wish I could find some steps to take to be more mindful and focused. One thing at a time, ya know?
Not much dashing required on my end these days, but always a lot of windows open (mental dashing?).
Yeah, I dash and type.....one of the things that I have to STOP doing is to put something on the stove to heat up and then just "check" email or the forum. I have burned pots dry on two occasions. I tried to make a rule for myself that I cannot leave the kitchen with a pot on the stove, but honestly, the kitchen is only 12 by 7, the rest of the house is pretty nearby....how bad can it be? Well, pretty bad when I get "sucked in" to the screen.
No dashing for children or cats, but I do feel like I dash around a far bit for someone who is mostly in this house alone, at least during the workday (between clients).

I type/read and dash, too, but usually to another window on my computer. Working at home, I need some "watercooler" time, which is currently provided by these SL forums, Facebook and sometimes personal e-mail. Yes, it's a challenge to get myself moving, but I also intersperse cooking and housework here and there.
I keep my iPad handy in the kitchen or workshop, it is perfect for type-and-dash, not-so-good for extensive replies. (He says while waiting to flip the pancakes...)

I'm more of a type and mosey/saunter poster.

That's more me! Love the "mental dash" idea.

I work around these moments by setting the kitchen timer for say, ten minutes in the future. Pulls me back to earth.
I do not type and dash...if I want computer time, I have to get up at 5am or there is always a kid on it.
But I do set the timer and go lay on the couch for a few minutes.
Iris Lily. Episodes of typing and dashing (in my life), are becoming more and more frequent these days. Sometimes I even forget that I was logged-in, and have to dash back to log-out.
Jemima. So true about homes owning us. DH and I say it to one another all the time, "won't it be great when everythig is all done", yet I think we both know (deep down inside), that a day's work is never done...
Me too, Gregg! Lots of windows opened. Now, if only I could come up with a system to close them.
Leslieann. I've given up on the idea of, "OK, I'm going to start the rice and check-up on the community for a moment". No, no more. Like yourself, I too have learned the hard way.
Bastelmutti. If the size (and plans) of our home called for it, I'd have a computer in the kitchen. Would be so great for looking up recipes, etc. Plus, I could watch-over stuff on the stove.
Bae. We're sort of a non-modern, non-electronic gizmo family, aside from my husband who has a work-issued iphone (for business), but just from the sounds of the convenience you enjoy having such a gadget, I can definitely see myself getting used to such a thing, too.
Goldensmom. Believe it or not, I'm getting there, too. Right behind you I am! I'm slowing (tremendously) the older I get, and to be perfectly honest, I'm quite enjoying it.
Fidgiegirl. You strike me as being a "mental dash" type person. :)
Fawn. I envy those like yourself who have the discipline to gauge yourself (and your time) on a restricted and controlled level. I just can't do it, but the good Lord knows how hard I've tried.
No typing and dashing for me because I don't have internet access at home so only go online at the library - which is located in the big park I run in every morning. It has a cafe in it and, after my run, grab my laptop out of the car, grab a coffee and crossiant or muffin from the cafe over looking the duck pond and fountains, and relax a bit while I catch up on these boards or surf the web. Once I'm done with all my online catching up, then I leave and am off line until the next time - which may be the next day or several days later (been almost a week since I've been online this time - check e-mails via my phone). It's pleasant and relaxing for a couple of hours yet I don't feel that I am spending all my time on the computer or on line. It does limit me - say when I want to look stuff up on the spur of the moment or discuss something further or site other sources - but for the most part I like having very limited online time.
Do I ever love the sounds of your morning routine, Spartana! And the surroundings you get to enjoy.

I often do that weekends and evenings. I might post and dash while on lunch at work, which is where I am now...
I often do it while in between things in the kitchen. However, my laptop lives on the breakfast bar separating K and LR, so it's often just a matter of turning my computer around to face with K side, so I can type something quick while standing up.
Lucky you with the layout you have, Tradd. So handy utilizing the breakfast bar as a computer area, too.
