View Full Version : Today's site hacking
It looks like the forums were hacked this morning. Somewhere around 8am EST, all attempts to load the forums resulted in a white page with the notice: "Hacked by nr_elove". By 9am, everything was back to normal.
I took the time to research the hacker's handle today and found that there are easily a thousand sites which have had the same treatment, by the same person(s) over the last couple of months, with a majority of the victims being hosting providers.
This, and the fact that repairs were made very quickly, causes me to speculate that our forums were probably not targeted specifically, but rather that our hosting provider was the target and our forums were ancillary damage.
I'm impressed that the host was able to correct the damage as quickly as they did, but now wonder, if we had been specifically targeted, who is the appropriate person to contact once we notice the problem and how do we contact them? Do all of the administrators have the ability to interact with the hosting provider or is it only someone from NRM?
I also found many, many Google hits on "nr_elove". The admin did a great job getting the site back up. Honestly, I'm not even sure who to thank. As you probably know Alan, I don't have anything to do with the hosting or admin areas so I'm also not sure who talks to who in the case of an attack. Rozie, can you fill us in on any details? Alan and all other tech savvy members: I'm sure any suggestions regarding how to improve security in a cost effective manner would be sincerely appreciated.
I wondered about that Alan. When I tried to get on, it had the "hacked by....." The only person's email I had on here wasn't home all day, so I couldn't tell if it was just me. But it didn't take long and the site was up and running again. I'm very appreciative of the work involved.
(Don't people have more to do than to hack sites???)
Yes. I have a few concerns Re: MANY of the newly signed-up members I'm seeing as of late. Names, where a mass of letters (that do not make any sense at all) represent the members, and IMV there's something wrong with that picture.
Good grief why would anyone want to hack in on a bunch of folks that love discussing the merits of reusing their plastic baggies
??????

ha ha ha, that and salad spinner discussions, and now add in that thread about gun ownership and *I* will hack this site!
Seriously, I do not mind talk about salad spinners. I love my salad spinner.
Salad spinners are a bourgeois affectation, and frankly, those who own and operate spinners show their disrespect for the environment and the health of their fellow man with every turn of the crank.
For shame.

Or worse - remember the "do you fold or scrunch" toilet paper thread from the old boards? Yep, dignified reading!

To be fair, I love our salad spinner, as the body of it serves as a great handy container to fast-thaw frozen seafood in , or a quick wine chiller :-)
.....they will have to peel my cold dead hands from my salad spinner............:laff:
I love that thing!!! Mine needs new brakes though. :~)
Mntlaurel........that's funny! I wondered the same thing.
My salad spinner is registered with the government as a very useful tool and cannot be removed from my ownership without extensive legal requirements completed.:-)
Yay Rah! for centrifugal force!
I hear Obama is trying to BAN salad spinners! I'm guessing they don't appreciate the god given right to spin in Kenya!

You actually push down on mine to initiate the spin (slinking back into the shadows now).

oh peggy, don't you know that Muslims don't like salad spinners? There is something in their religious text about it. That's the source of the President's distrust of spinning, I'm quite certain. :)
I'm heading down to Bed, Bath & Beyond in my 3 mpg HummVeee to grab about a dozen spinners for the bat cave. Who's with me?

It's people like you who buy NAME BRAND shampoo and waste toilet paper!

I'm sure it's all that naked, loose lettuce in a fast world! ;)

Tread lightly peggy, we kept a list of all the scrunchers from the old site.

Ah finally, the salad spinner war has begun!
