View Full Version : Weight Watchers
I finally admitted that I need to lose weight--about 40 lb. Ack!! Two weeks ago I joined Weight Watchers and am pretty well pleased with it. Trying to figure out the points in my various casseroles is a bit dicey but I think I get a pretty good estimate. The main thing for me was to quit my CocaCola habit (all the sugar, all the caffeine, all the time...) and start exercising. Anyway, there were 3 lb less of me at the end of the first week.
Well done, Florence! I am envious and also proud of you :)
Congratulations on your progress! I've heard from several other friends that they've had good results with WW.
YAY Florence! Three pounds and addressing the coke issue...that's BIG. Good for you.
Congratulations! I worked at a medical facility for 16 years, and the staff that worked with patients on weight loss and fitness consistently gave kudos to Weight Watchers. My manager is currently attending and she is noticeably slimmer.
I love Weight Watchers. If I'm in serious weight loss mode, that's the only program I bother with. It's sensible and normal, and you don't have to bore the world with list of your limitations in diet because there aren't any.

+1. just rejoined, as I fell off my good food habits & regained 25 pounds I lose a few years ago. Lost 8# recently, and though I have 30-40 to go, my knees already feel much better.

To me, the best thing about WW is that their program really teaches mindful eating, learning to love delicious food, but in moderation and adjusting ingredients to reduce fat and calories, but retain taste, and having a program that recognizes that they are teaching an "eating plan" for life, not a "diet", which is why their recidivism rate of people regaining the weight they have lost is far less than most other plans. The WW plan really works. AND is easy to live with long term, as a way to eat for the rest of your life.

Well now you all have my ready to do WW! Have you all done just the points by themselves, or have you attended meetings, too?

For me it is the WEIGH IN that is necessary to keep on track, so I go to a physical facility and attend a meeting which is usually pretty good. I need to be accountable to something outside of me in order to be successful. YMMV.
But by all mean use the online tools as well. The WW site is very rich in content, I access only a tiny bit of it. I will say that the chicks on the Newbie discussion board can be hilarious, some great wits there.
Beware the WW crappy food products, though. If you go to a physical site they are always having sales and free samples of the stuff. Processed food is processed food even if made in low cal portions.
Redfox: My knees were the deciding factor for me too!
fidgie: I am attending the meetings because I need the weigh in accountability. Also, there is a lot of good information at the meetings. I am still exploring the website but it is awesome.
Edited to add:
I second Iris Lily's warning about the WW food for sale--expensive and totally unnecessary.
Have any of you ever tried to create your own accountability program, with friends? Was it successful? I think that would help me if I could find people who were interested in joining me. I would prefer that to having to pay for, drive to, and attend meetings.

Well, I think that's the value of WW--that they are always there (a commercial incentive keeps them there) when your group of friends drop out, as they inevitably will. In my group of friends who have done WW, some of us are ready at times that others are not, so it's tough to get a group together.

Good for you! There are on-line tools (both at WW site and others) where you can put in your casserole recipe, and get enough info to calculate your points. I always found casseroles hardest, because they are a mixture of so many ingredients, all with varying numbers of calories, fiber, etc., but it is possible to figure it out on-line.
And there is... Us! I am happy to be accountable to y'all. Thusly, I will say that I had a less than stellar week last week (today is my weigh-in day), and while I went over my points, including 2 over my bonus points, I lost a bit... but that could be in the variance of the scale.
I start today anew, with a pledge to stick closely to my points!
PS- I have a digital food scale, and when my DH cooks, he weighs everything & writes down the ingredients & grams on the chalkboard, so I can build the recipe & figure out how much a serving is worth in points. I downloaded the free WW Kitchens to my iPad, alongside the WW mobile app, and the recipes I enter into Kitchen show up in the app. Very handy!
Well now you all have my ready to do WW! Have you all done just the points by themselves, or have you attended meetings, too?
Like Iris lilly, I really found the weekly accountability at the meetings helped me a lot and I also had a lot of value in the website. I needed the weigh ins though to keep me on track...otherwise I don't think I would have the drive. I have also been able to for the most part keep off the 20 lbs I lost at WW.
Right now I am not working on weight specifically, but training for the grand canyon and upping my level of general physical fitness. Of course I would always like to drop a few lbs and slim down a size. My goals coincided with my employers wellness program kick off this year...DH and I have been weighing in and going to the weekly sessions. Just the weekly accountability has kept me focused...plus all the grad students facilitating the program know my goals and ask me about it every week, so I feel pressure (totally self created) to stay on track. Anyway, long winded way to say I need someone aside from myself to report to stay on track.
Definitely don't fall for the consumery part of WW - the crap food, or the cookbooks (unless you want/need a cookbook). There are tons of great WW recipes online.
I looked around online and there are several health-related goal tracking sites that allow online support. Would anyone be interested in forming a group at one of those - for instance, FitDay or SparkPeople? Or any others that you're aware of?
I heard of an accountability measure that can really work. Write a check out to some organization that you don't believe in and a letter to go with it saying how much you appreciate its work. Give it to a friend and tell them to mail it if you are not accountible for any bad habit you want to break.

OK, weighed in today--lost 0.4 lb for a total of 3.4 lb in 2 weeks. On to week 3!!
Florence, I could have written your original post myself. I, too, just joined WW last week. My issues are soda and not exercising. My first weigh in is tomorrow. I've lost quite a bit according to my own scale, but, oooww, the caffeine/sugar withdrawls have been no fun at all! My sister has lost 120 pounds on Nutrisystem, but I can't afford the $350+ a month, nor am I comfortable with the premise that once she goes off the pre-packaged food that she'll be able to keep the weight off. I truly hope she's successful for her sake. Losing the weight has absolutely been the best thing she's done for herself in decades.
In any case, I decided the $42 bucks a month for an onsite meeting and weigh in once a week was probably the most important factor for me. I like the options to be able to eat fruit and vegetables with no restrictions and that the WW plan allows you to have some of your favorite foods occaisionally. I don't mean to bash NutriSystem because it's been very sucessful for my sister, it's just that she can't ever eat out and she has almost a panic attack if she is faced with "regular" food that isn't a NutriSystem product. Joining WW really felt like a positive move in my life.
DH and I have been on WW since january 2011. I've lost 40 pounds and am still working on the last 25 pounds. The WW program is a "life" program and its easy to follow once you learn the program. We do it on line and the cost is under $18/ mo; well worth it for all the benefits.
Nella, I've never been on NutriSystem and it doesn't seem to be something I'd do well on. I like to cook my own food and we eat out once a week. I'm getting the hang of the Points Plus and the key for me is portion control. I keep a big bowl of apple slices, celery sticks, and baby carrots in the refrigerator and graze my way through it during the day.
As Glo said, it is a life program and I'm in this for the long haul. So far I haven't missed a day other than Sundays on the exercise bike; I am starting of very slowly--just 12 minutes the first week and now 14 minutes.
So far so good.
Had my first weigh-in today. Lost 5.6 pounds! Yea! However, I can't really attribute it to the diet or exercise as I've actually been in bed 6 days out of the last week. I went to the meeting last Friday, came home and felt like I got hit by a truck! Except for the one trip to the doctor I hadn't left the house until I went to the WW meeting today. I told the leader that I probably would gain weight by next week because I was finally feeling better, but she says no, that if I stick with the points plan I should come back with another loss. I'm trusting that's true!
I've known a couple people on Nutrisystem and I think it might be an ok program for a short time, sort of to kickstart you in the right direction.
My friend was on it for several months and they deliver the food in large Styrofoam containers. He's got a basement full of them.l It's rather horrifying.

I bet there's a nonprofit somewhere in his community who would be glad of these for an outdoor event they do, if they are clean. Maybe the beleagered local Komen chapter wupld use them to store bottled water for their run, or a frat for beer soaked tailgate parties...

See, that's what I told him. These containers are clean, and I'm sure if he put them up on Craigslist he'd have a taker.
He stopped with the Nutrisystem deliveries pretty much for the excessive styrofoam. He is kind of a earth hugger.
Nth that it's a good system! My work offered it as part of their wellness program - a free if you finish it kind of thing. I never bothered with the branded food, cookbooks, or calculators. But the points system itself is very, very helpful for evaluating food choices. I've still got the little book, and go back to counting points periodically.
I think the meetings depend a lot on the group dynamic and the coordinator. The coordinator at my group was not good - she nicknamed me "Skinny", which was bizarre and real awkward. I ended up just popping in for weigh-in and literature, and that worked fine.

I ended up just popping in for weigh-in and literature, and that worked fine. I think you're correct about the coordinator and group dynamics. I'm lucky in that the center I go to offers meetings every day of the week, and several times a day with different leaders. That might not be an option in smaller communities. I can see how an uncomfortable nickname would certainly put me off.

Nella, I'm glad you are feeling better. And 5.6 lb. is off to a good start!! My next weigh in is Wednesday; I'll let you know how it goes.
This week I lost 1.4 lb. for a total of 4.8 lb. Last night I used the WW cookbook to make Feta & sun-dried tomato stuffed baked chicken breasts. A most delicious 4 points.
I am down 13 since starting, and yet yesterday I stress ate sugar all day... Sheesh. So this week is not my best. However, in it for the long haul, and the trend is the one I want. When I reflected on my sugar stress eating, I learned a lot about myself... Again! So, bonus for that.

Oh no, terrible! But I do have to say, if you ever get a chance to see the comedy series Little Britain, there is a sketch in there that will likely remind you of your time at your weird WW club. And it's pretty funny.

My friends LOVE Little Britain and tried to turn me onto it, but I wasn't keen on it. Perhaps I should try it again. I remember when I couldn't stand Absolutely Fabulous but then, one day just sat down and watched without distractions, and I became a huge fan.

Hi, all, I've been away from the forums a bit and had not seen this thread. I'll chime in and report as of yesterday I've lost 35# on WW and I have never been able to accomplish this amount of loss on any other program. It seems very simple to me and I'll agree with those who attribute success to the meeting leader's quality. Mine is awesome...she's funny and TRUTHFUL. She encourages, does not patronize. And she is a stitch! I like hearing the tips that come out of the meetings from other WW-ers and their success stories. They do inspire.
After losing the first 15# or so, I felt so much lighter on my feet (duh) and I began to become more active. So it just gets easier as it goes on. I know the last 5-10 will be tough tho, from hearing that from others.

Congrats KayLRZ, that's a big accomplishment!
My weigh in today netted a one pound loss. Figure that's not too bad. Has anybody here ever subscribed to the Weight Watchers magazine? It look interesting, but I'm not willing to invest in a subscription unless it gets good reviews from others. What'cha think all?

I really doubt that the magazine has anything that you won't get from the meetings or from their website. Save your money. IMHO
Our library carries it, so I read it there. Once in a while I write out a recipe.

I don;t subscribe to it but I buy one at a meeting once in a while--maybe every other issue. I like to try new recipes, and actually, I haven't had a bad one yet. My husband has liked all of them too.
I don't read them cover to cover, but I like to read the first-person success stories.

I am going to try out My Fitness Pal. I did Spark for a while but now I feel icky whenever I go on there. Not sure where that is coming from, but no need to feel icky about this journey so trying something new. I have added a few FB friends to my friends on MFP and would welcome anyone from the boards to friend me as well. My name is fidgiegirl over there too.
I weighed in today--I lost 1.6 lb. for a total of 6.4 lb lost. Weight now 168.2. Last weekend we ate at the Olive Garden. My favorite Chicken Marsala is 19 points; so I had half for lunch and half for dinner. I passed on the bread sticks (which I dearly love). I am v e r y s l o w l y increasing my time on the exercise bike--now at 16 minutes per day, 6 days a week.
How's everyone else doing?
I weigh in tomorrow. I'm going to have to start getting creative with my meals, as after only three weeks I'm getting tired of just a lot of raw vegetables. Fruit, however, I never seem to get tired of. Plus, I'm starting to get some cravings for fast food. I know I can build fast food points into one of my daily or weekly points plus totals, I just haven't had a chance to "do the math" yet. Plus, I think I may need to be getting more protein. It wasn't too bad the first two weeks, but this last week I've been pretty hungry. Our leader says that can be because of a need for more protein. I did buy some chicken thighs this week, so I need to get some of them cooked up and prepared into dishes that will stretch the points.
Weighed in yesterday--stayed the same. Damned office cookies and not getting to the pool but once. As my leader said yesterday, "just thinking about exercise doesn't work."
Would you mind including a list of what you ate for a day? I am too chubby. My walking routine is only keeping me at one weight. My goal is to reduce 10 lbs. Today I ate:
Breakfast: Cinnamon raisin english muffin w/butter, small handful of slivered almonds w/banana and two cups of green tea (no sugar)
Snack: two rice cakes, apple and small handful of almonds
Lunch: green beans, elbow noddles and beef (all portions about a handful) (no butter)
Snack: orange, green drink, Cliff bar, tea
Dinner: chicken sausage w/salad and mineral water
Desert: one shortbread cookie w/glass of soy milk
This is a typical meal any day of the week. I have no idea of the calorie count.
cypress, if you enter what you eat into the SparkPeople nutrition tracker, it will tell you what the calorie and nutrient counts are and also how it matches up with your needs. I am sure those other trackers do it, too, but I have some experience with SparkPeople.

Fidgiegirl, thanks for mentioning the website for MFP. I joined and found it really helpful.
It gives the carbs, sodium and protein summary for my daily intake which I found really informative.
Finally I understand what I am eating in total. I can safely reduce my protein for dinner and must watch my carb intake more closely when I include more starch-type veggies such as peas.
I went digging to see what I should be having for intake and found these sites to explore.
Desired Protein intake per day - http://www.snac.ucla.edu/documents/Protein2010.pdf
Desired sodium intake recommended - 1500mg per day - http://www.cardiosmart.org/News/Default.aspx?id=3339
Not a tremendously successful week but I lost 0.2 lb for total lost 6.6lb. Weight 168 lb.
How's everyone else doing this week??
I'm finding MyFitnessPal's food diary to be very useful. My calorie counts aren't as high as I was expecting. That helps me stick with it - I don't feel like I'm bound to gain weight if I eat a little more one day. I've lost about 3# since dropping sugar a week ago.

How's everyone else doing this week??Hey, any loss is better than a gain - right? I've discovered dill pickles -- no points!!
Gained a few on my trip to Oakland, a meeting, very stressful. I ate to remedy stress... Bad habit. Need an alternative, and movement is the logical one... I hate exercise. Meh.
I went to a different WW meeting from the one I normally go to, and the leader struck a chord. The topic this week was "fiber" and that's great because I was receptive, and need to learn much more. I figured because I eat a lot of greens that I was fine, but now I don't think I have been meeting the requirement of 24 grams. I need to increase the amount of fiber. Fortunately, I like beans and they are very high. I don't like oatmeal, so no one suggest that.
Raspberries are VERY high is fiber, who would have thought!? And who can afford them except for an occasional treat.
IL, if you like berries and have a costco nearby, their frozen organic berries are quite affordable. Great in a smoothie. Hummous with a whole wheat pita is another great high fiber snack (though I can't really indulge in that any more due to the carb factor).
I'm not doing WW, but am still trying to meet my fitness/health goals. I haven't lost anything, but the fact that I've managed to maintain my current plateau range at around 65-66 kgs throughout the winter is a huge accomplishment for me. The weather is warming up, the days are getting longer, and my carb cravings are dissipating. I think I must have some mutant "prepare to hibernate" gene that kicks in around October every year! Thankfully it is counterbalanced a bit by the "must eat lots of salad" gene that seems to kick in around May...
lhamo
Lhamo, the weather also has a huge impact for me. I am glad spring is here!
I just looked at my food logs for the past week and saw that I've been averaging 40g fiber/day. The biggest contributors are legumes and sweet potatoes. Avocadoes have a surprising amount of fiber, too.
This winter, I managed to keep the salad-eating going all winter by combining it with soup instead of having bread on the side - much better from a nutrition standpoint, as well as carbs. Also I sometimes made "hot salad" by quickly sauteeing a bunch of the prepped veggies in the fridge and serving over lettuce. Eliminates the need for dressing; a little water works for sauteeing instead of oil.
After discovering My Fitness Pal, (thanks to SLF friends) I have found that following the low-carb way of eating is so much easier to follow. WW follows this portion control approach pretty much as does the diabetic and the DASH diet, I believe.
I look at the carb count of a food and then decide if I want to enter that amount in my daily meal carb record. It is both amazing and amusing that simply by the idea of writing it down, I am prevented from eating what I don't wish to write down. Of course, the protein content is carefully considered and the veggies are whatever we desire outside of the starchy types.
I am down 7 lbs, DH is onside with following this approach as well and we are both enjoying what we are eating and food prep is fun.

I was surprised to learn that raspberries have 2 1/2 times the fiber of strawberries. Who'd have thunk?
Small berries and seeds have more fiber than larger ones because you're getting more skin per serving, and that's where the fiber (and seeds, in the case of berries) are. So lentils have more fiber than kidney beans, for instance; small blueberries have more fiber than large blueberries, etc.

That's funny, that's is EXACTLY what I ate yesterday, black bean salad and sweet potatoes. Black beans a super high in fiber.
You are right, avocados are great, too! As are artichokes.

Then pomegranates must be sky high in fiber. I love them.
Hey, any loss is better than a gain - right? I've discovered dill pickles -- no points!!
me, too--bought pickles on Tuesday and have had a few. Low cal, but killer with the sodium.
Lost just over another 2 pounds this week. That brings my total for the month to over 10 pounds. I'm pretty happy with that. I went to lunch today to Noodles and was determined to have the Wisconsin Mac and Cheese. I asked for a nutrition guide and found that the regular serving is 28 points! Yikes. That changed my mind quickly. Had another Asian dish instead that was only 12 points. (Can't think of the name now, darn. But I'd know it if I go again.) I was surprised to find that I liked it quite a lot.
Wow, Nella, 10 pounds in a month is great. Go get a 10 pound bag of flour and realize that you've been carrying that weight around with you every step you made. Good job!!!
great job nella! I'm losing at the rate of .5 per week, which is slow, very slow, but ok--I'll live with it.
down 2# this week...i feel good!
I lost 2.2 lb. this week for a total weight loss of 8.8 lb. My weight is now 165.8 lb.; 30.8 lb. to go. It is easier now that I know the servings sizes and points for most of the food I normally prepare. Weight Watchers is a wonderful way to lose weight--regular meetings with a well informed leader who has lost weight on the program, all the online support you could ask for (eTools is fantastic!), and a really nutritious way to eat real food while losing weight.:)
Florence, I agree with you about WW being a great way to lose weight. I've not ever been this successful without feeling deprived. Also, I took your suggestion and while I was at the grocery store went and picked up a 10 pound bag of flour and you're right, 10 pounds does seem like a much bigger deal. Then I went to the dairy case and visuallized 10 pounds of butter. I figure that's fat, right, and that's what I've really lost. It's a real motivator. Thanks for suggesting it! My weigh in is tomorrow. We'll see how I did this week.
Gosh, everbody here is doing so well with their weight loss goals. Thanks everyone for posting. It's really been a helpful support!
me, too--bought pickles on Tuesday and have had a few. Low cal, but killer with the sodium.Yeah, they can be. I actually have the reverse problem with sodium. I'm always in danger of my sodium level being too low which can trigger heart attacks. It's kind of unusual to be overweight with a low sodium issue, but in some ways it makes it easier to use low cal foods because they are often high in sodium.
Oh doh, my math was wrong: I doing WW and am losing at the rate of 1 lb weekly, so that is perfectly ok with me.
Actually, if you are doing any kind of weight or resistance training along with your dietary changes you are probably also building muscle at the same time you are losing fat. So if you have dropped 10 lbs total, you have probably lost about 20 lbs of fat and replaced 10 of that with lean muscle mass. My weight has been holding pretty steady the past few months, but man, my shape is changing. I have noticable definition to my leg, arm and back muscles now. I'm doing a mixture of running (currently on a 10k training program, running 3-4 days a week), weights (major muscle groups eccentric workout recommended in the Perfect Science of Slim + abs and back, twice weekly,), and swimming (10-15 laps a session, 2-3 sessions a week). It seems to be giving me a good mix of cardio + strength/stretching.
I've lost about 10kgs since January last year, aim to lose about 5 more this year, if possible. But fitness is really the overall goal.
lhamo
Didn't lose anything this week. I'm a little disappointed, but my gut's been a little slow moving this week. Maybe that's the problem. I've been pretty scrupulous about following the points plan. My scale this morning shows a loss so it'll probably catch up with me when I weigh-in next Friday.
Nella, I don't know why there are some weeks when I lose more than others. I do the same amount of exercise and eat the same number of points but week before last I lost 0.2 lb. and last week I lost 2.2 lb. Go figure! But looking at the big picture, over the last 6 weeks, there's 8.8 lb less that I have to carry around with me and over the next 6 weeks, I'm sure to lose another 5 or so pounds. Anyway, we'll just keep plugging away at it.
In this last go 'round, I lose weight every 3 weeks. In week one I'll gain a few ounces, in week 2 I'll loose a few ounces, and in week 3: that's when a chunk falls off. So that's the pattern, and I'm ok with it. I'm deep into garden work now so weight loss will pick up a little in the next two+ months, but after that--I'l be happy to maintain 1 lb loss average per week.
WW Program says .5 to 2 lbs loss weekly is the average.
Ready to get the blubber ball rolling down hill.
After trip to beach......
Down 4 pounds.
Cleaning up eating, walking every morning.
Ready to get the blubber ball rolling down hill.
.
LOL! We'll bounce and roll down hill together!!
I'm at 15.8 lost in 2 months, another 34 to go! Woo hoo. This is the best time of year for me to change my eating as it's fresh fruit n veg season! Managing that throughh the winter is always a challenge. Glad to have this thread

Wow -- that's impressive! Well done, redfox. We'll have to meet up for salad instead of sweet potato fries next time I'm back in Seattle :)

I lost 1.8 lb. for a total lost 10.6 lb. Weight 164. 29 lb. to go.
After having had an Easter brunch splurge I was a little worried because last week I weighed-in at the same as the previous week. With the holiday I thought I might have gained some weight back. Achhh! But I'm happy to report a 1.4 pound loss. Woo hoo! This week's message about planning workouts was hard to hear. I haven't really been working out at all, and it's something I really don't enjoy. Even just going out and walking for a few minutes has never held any pleasure for me. I'm really an indoor kind of gal.
The key to loose weight is in two things.First thing is calorie watch:you keep a watch on your diet that you are not swallowing too much calories.Second thing is burning the excessive calories in your body. And you do it by some exercise workouts.:treadmill:
Being fit can only be attained by loosing extra weight. The problems that overweight people face are countless. You can guess the severity of excessive weight by heart problems to cancer that can take your life away. Now you can think that how much necessary it is to be fit.:D
Loosing weight is very important with respect to your health. It keeps you away from diseases.Healthy diet with not too much calories and daily exercise is so good for getting smartness and fitness.
The foods that are rich in calories should not be used while loosing your weight.Because it the calorie who is doing it so you must avoid in taking calories.
So first of all choose a proper diet with food items that are good in loosing weight.
In the very first beginning you just measure your weight and see how that how much excessive weight you have. Then make a suitable plan to loose weight accordingly.
Last week I lost 0.4 lb. for a total lost of 11 lb. Weight now 163.6 lb. :)
Today's discussion was on adding more color to our meals--by adding fresh fruits and veggies. While I am eating more fruits and veggies than I ever have in my life, I am determined to add two new berries, raspberries and blueberries, and one new veggie, eggplant to my diet next week. (I may, however, have to sell the family silver to pay for the raspberries...)
Yesterday's weigh-in: Down 2.2# Total 38#.
Today in a check out line a guy gave me the up-and-down! Woot! That hasn't happened in a while!
Florence, two ways that I look at produce costs:
1. Not so costly if I purchase what's in season. Raspberries are not in season right now. BUT frozen raspberries are great for many uses.
2. OR, the per-pound cost compared to terribly unhealthy foods. Chips, for instance, cost about $5/pound. Raspberries are probably close to that. Better to buy raspberries than chips, certainly.
Raspberries really are better if they are local and in season because they mold very quickly.
Rosemary, what a great idea! Since the raspberries will be going into smoothies, frozen should be just fine.
Last week I lost 0.4 lb. for a total lost of 11 lb. Weight now 163.6 lb. :)
...(I may, however, have to sell the family silver to pay for the raspberries...)Yea Florence and KayLRZ! You're doing great. I too have noticed a considerable uptick in how much my weekly grocery bill is. I always took pride that I could get by on $100 a month or less (I'm single - just me in the household) but now I'm noticing that I'm paying $75 a week! Yikes. Well, I guess it's worth getting healthier. I do notice I'm spending much, much (!) less on eating out.
I think that we should not underestimate the health care costs that we will save over time as we maintain a healthy weight with healthy food and exercise habits. For example, at 174 my knees hurt, really hurt and most likely eventually I would have to have knee replacement surgery. After losing about 8 lbs. I noticed that my knees didn't hurt. I can buy a lot of raspberries for the cost of knee replacement.
Extra weighted people have a high risk of getting heart attack because the fats that freeze in your valves of heart can make the valve opening narrow and that situation gives you a heart attack. So the excessive weight is your worst enemy.
If you make exercise a daily routine then you can loose weight as well as prevent other deadly things like cancer. So say hello to gym.Choose a good gym and join it.No matter you do it in morning or in evening just exercise!
I have heard that more fat you go more scared you be of gym.So fasten your tied with gym because its time to do some exercise!:laff:
You can take my example.I am a cyclist and I always keep myself smart and fit:confused:.

I've also been on WW for the last year and also am on the points plus program where you can eat all the fruits and veggies you want --that really helps me manage my hunger. I just went down one size and the last time I put my jeans on it looked like I could fit in a smaller size. I've been completely sedentary but plan on walking again soon. D H is also just starting on it. Now that I am 50 when I gained weight, which I gained 30 lbsvery quickly it was all over my body and exaggerated in places where I never had weight before! It's great to read everone's experiences here!
Tussiemussies,
Welcome to the WW thread. Sounds like you've had a good experience with WW. Perhaps you can share some things about how you've stayed motivated during the last year.

I agree about the raspberries, and I think it was someone here who offered the idea about frozen ones, good one! I did buy frozen raspberries and that works well. I focused on raspberries when I learned at WW their super high fiber content. Boy, you eat a cup of beans and a cup of raspberries, and you have pretty much reached your fiber nutrients for the day. DH grows red raspberries but his crops have failed the past two years due to dry summers.
On that particular diet, the cheapness of beans balances the expense of raspberries.
I remember, years ago, when I prided myself on spending $40 weekly for groceries, but I gained weight on that. Now I tell myself that there is no virture in economizing on groceries if it results in weight gain, and I can afford better.

Same here Iris lily, I was being penny wise and pound (actually many pounds) foolish in keeping the food budget so low.
I took Wednesday's lecture to heart. I'm trying new things this week and bulking up the color and variety on my plate. Look at this Thing I bought last night:

Dragonfruit (not telling what I paid for this adventure! I won't be buying it again.) You scoop out the white interior; the pretty pink inner membrane has no flavor and it's tough. It has the texture and flavor of a mild kiwi fruit. It needed maybe some lime squeezed on it or something. I actually drizzled a bit of honey on it. I liked it, but because of the pricetag, won't buy it again. Novelty only. Bucket list checked.
Down another 1.5 this week per my weigh-in this morning. I hit my first weight loss goal of 5%. Got a big star sticker for it. (Amazing how a "star chart" still works even at my age.) My leader this week said you can eat Kiwi without peeling it. Never thought of that before. I've always spent the time to peel the fuzzy skin off, but she says that's where the fiber in kiwi is from, and we don't always peel other fuzzy fruit like peaches. Think I'll give it a try. Thanks again everybody for your ongoing positive support. !

Hi Nella, the thing that is keeping me motivatedI hate to admit it but it is just that was always a small size my whole adult life until my late thirties when the weight has just kept creeping on although I ate very healthy and low fat. I found myself in a very large size and I am just determined to lose this weight and not get any larger!
At first giving up all the foods I used to eat was really hard, I used to do a lot of cooking and some baking on the weekend, it was like going into another stage of my life which I am and mourning letting go of the way things were. That is pretty much where I am at with my life since I turned fifty! Although it was hard I just knew I would get really really heavy if I didn't do it.
My method probably isn't as healthy as it should be but I vary a lot of different fruits and veggies and how I eat them. I have two snacks a day of non-fat yogurt mixed with cocoa powder and vanilla and stevia the yogurt is also plain. It almost tastes like pudding. Then I eat the same main meal of bean burritos, there is a tiny bit of cheese in there, but I eat these for my main meal almost every day two times a day. Lately I have been having some smoothies made w-non GMO soy milk and frozen fruit w/a little yogurt in it. Also sometimes for my main meal I'll put the Ezekial cereal into the yogurt.
Then we go out to eat on Sat. Where I ususally have a veggie appetizer and salad we go to our favorite restaurant--The Cheesecake Factory. Sometimes I'll have the cheesecake made with spenda as my weekly point treat.
Eating the same every day(I also don't eat sugar) and cutting out all sugar has stopped me from craving any foods. I don't even think about the foods anymore that I don't eat.
I did today try one the one size smaller pair of jeans and I wasn't there yet...

That is really great Nella!
Boy, I learned a lesson about my eating habits yesterday. My mechanic advised that my transmission has to be replaced ($3,500!) and after I got the news all I could think about was how much I just wanted to sit down and eat, eat, eat! I never really thought before that I was an emotional eater, but wow, I must have really been deluding myself. The good news, the only good news from yesterday, was that I didn't give in to eating any junk food at all, but boy did I down the better part of a big bag of baby carrots after work. Chomp, chomp, chomp!
Oh Nella, what a food therapy challenge that $3500 estimate must have been! And you were able to beat it back with carrots!!! Strong woman!
I don't know what kind of vehicle that you drive but before I put $3500 into it, I'd want to be sure that after I put the new transmission in, it would be worth more than $3500. You can check the used vehicle price at kellybluebook.com.

You can check the used vehicle price at kellybluebook.com.Thanks Florence. I decided to go ahead and get it fixed, as I just put $1700 into maintenance repairs a month ago. So now I'll have about $5000 worth of repairs, but I'm assured by others that it's still a really good car with many, many miles to go. I do have a lot of faith in my mechanic and his opinion, so I'm taking a deep breath and just having it fixed. Now, if I can just keep my little fingers off the candy jar that sits on top of the auto shop's counter!! Dang, I'm still having stress cravings even more than 24 hours after I got the estimate!
Last week I lost 0.8 lb. , total lost 11.8 lb. , weight 162.8 lb.
My husband has decided that he wants to lose 20 lb. so that he won't need to go on blood pressure meds. So he is joining me in my WW meals and snacks. It is fun when he asks me how many points something is. I hope he will stay with me on it and get his weight down 20 lb. which is exactly 10% of his current weight.
Lost another pound this week, even with the stress cravings. I didn't give into them but once. I really "needed" that chocolate chip cookie! Yeah, right. But I am pleased to have a loss this week. I need to start on my exercise programs and start earning those activity points, I've just not been able to get my head around it with my pending move. I'm putting every spare moment into packing. Do you suppose I can consider that an activity? Probably not...
If packing up and moving doesn't qualify as Activity Points, it certainly should!!! However, I wouldn't worry about it until the move is over and things have been sorted out. You are steadily losing and that's what is important. As the meeting last week said, be a good friend to yourself! No bad self talk. You succeeded in continuing your weight loss in spite of an upcoming move and unexpected car expenses! Atta girl, Nella!!
ack +1 this week. I believe alcohol last Saturday and pumpernickel bread are the culprits. Back on the wagon!!!!!
Went off program for 3 weeks; two of them traveling. Gained 7#. Dammit! Back on.
First, thanks again everybody for your ongoing support. I've found this to be one of the best threads I've participated in on the boards.
Next: Ta da! Big day for me. Today as I stepped on the scale, I find I weigh less than what I reported on my driver's license the last time it was renewed almost 10 years ago! And I fudged a good bit then! Whoo hooo!!!
Went off program for 3 weeks; two of them traveling. Gained 7#. Dammit! Back on.Glad you're back on track. Hang in there!

I love the quote at the bottom of redfox's post especially when considering our weight:
"Ring the bells that still can ring.... forget your perfect offering. There's a crack in everything... that's how the Light gets in." ~Leonard Cohen
travelling for work always sets me back, redfox -- usually find it a challenge to keep up with exercise and the food choices are not what I would have at home.
I'm holding steady at 65kgs. Need to really kick it in gear with the low carb thing again, but still have 3 more weeks before I hit my 10k running goal. Well, at least I'm not gaining, and muscle-to-fat ratio continues to improve. Baby steps...

Last week I lost 0.4 lb for a total lost 12.2 lb; weight 162.4 lb. I have been rewarding myself for each 3 lb loss with a manicure so I can make an appointment for my treat. I think my 15 lb treat will be a facial or maybe a massage. The best reward, of course, is improved health but some new clothes will be a close second.

As a massage therapist I can tell you it's one of the best ways to treat yourself. Hmmm...maybe I should call my own massage therapist and get a trade set up.
I'm a little worried about my own weigh-in tomorrow morning. My own scale is up a bit 'cause during the last few days I've had lunch out with a friend and then was at a pizza fundraising party last night. I held it down to lots of salad and only two pieces of cheese pizza, but that'll probably be enough to make a difference. Dang that second piece. Of course, they put the pizza tray right in front of me!!!:0!
Today was weigh-in for me; down 2-1/2 pounds; 23 to go!

Good going!!
Just got back from my meeting. I was convinced I had gained weight this week and my own scale at home showed that I was up 2 pounds, but the WW scale showed I was down 1.5. I'm a little confused, but I'll take it! Ten more pounds and I'll be at 10%. On my way!

You know, I've had that happen too--I'll just be sure that I haven't lost anything and maybe gained, but when I get on the WW scale, I'm down at least a little.
I have another 4.8 lb for my 10%. and then I will be half way to my goal weight. One day at a time.
I try to use only one scale. The scale at the pool where I swim daily weighs me 4 pounds lighter than my scale at home. So I consider my home scale my "real" weight. Of course, I can't seem to walk by that pool scale without getting on!

Of course, I can't seem to walk by that pool scale without getting on!You're a better person than I am. I'd consider my real weight to be that as determined by the pool scale. I'd probably justify in my mind that they had it calibrated every once in a while so it must be the "correct one." Plus, a freebie four pounds - you could count me in!
Last week I lost 1.4 lb.; total lost 13.6 lb.; weight 161. 3.4 lb. more to meet my 10% goal. One day at a time, 26 points at a time.
I am finding that I am a volume eater---to feel satisfied, I need volume. It can be a veggie tray, a bowl of fruit, or a bowl of popcorn. I don't like the WW food that they have for sale because 1.) It's ridiculously over priced 2.) For the points, I can make myself a much bigger volume of food. 3.) It's full of preservatives, artifical flavors & coloring, and other chemicals. No thanks. As Michael Pollan said "Eat real food, not too much." and that's so true.
This week I'm going to try jicama and mangos. Never eaten either one.
Well, I made it through my going away part last Saturday without eating, like, the entire german chocolate cake! I only had two pieces, which I think is about 25 points. We'll see tomorrow what the scale says.
I weighed in today--lost 1 lb. last week for a total 14.6 lb. lost. Weight now 160 lb. s l o w l y. s h e. g o e s.
I"ve been losing weight at the rate of 1 lb a week. Taht's slow, but hey--I've also had nice glasses of wine and chocolate many days, so I'm not feeling deprived!

Yes, that's the same with me. I'm in this for the long haul and self-deprivation just isn't my thing!
Hello eveybody,
Just came back from my meeting and I've lost another 1.4 pounds. (And that's even with having eaten two pieces of cake at my party.) My grand total so far is 19 pounds, so I've only got one more to go to hit 20. Yeah! I keep waiting for it to get "hard," but so far so good.
Wonder what the total of what all of us have lost together would be. Any interest in figuring it out? The subtotal for what Florence and I have lost would be 33.6. Iris Lilly, Glo, want to add yours in? Anybody else?
Good going Nella! I'm looking forward to getting my 15 lb. star next week and will be very glad to say goodby to the 160's.
oops, I forgot to check in for a while...at Wednesday's meeting I was down 3.2# (total 43.3).
We should share our favorite "nuggets" from meetings. Mine is, "You can't eat it if it is NOT in your house." That goes for junk or healthy food.
oops, ..."You can't eat it if it is NOT in your house." That goes for junk or healthy food.
I like that one.
One of my all time favorite WW sayings about "food wasting guilt": The food has already been produced and will end up in the garbage, why do you think it has to go through you before it goes to the garbage?
I like that one.

Oh, I love that!!
I lost 0.4 lb. last week; total lost 15 lb.; weight 159.6.
DH lost 1 lb.; total lost 3.5 lb.; weight 199.
Love this healthy eating!
Dang! Gained .6 pound this week. I think it's 'cause I didn't have my prunes the night before. Y'all know what I'm talkin' about.... I'm sure it'll be all gone by next week.
Nella, I know exactly what you mean!! I never miss my bran muffin the day before weigh in...LOL!!
Down 1.8 this week which is really good, but the class topic this week was about exercise and my gut reaction to that is always, "Ugg." I really don't like to exercise, I've never "felt better" after I've exercised, ever, and getting out and doing anything has always been a struggle for me. I used to teach water aerobics, not because I liked it, but because being the teacher was the only way I knew for sure I'd go to class! Once I get settled in Virginia I know I'll start going back to the gym. There's a YMCA very close to my apartment there that I think will take my Silver Sneakers card.
In WW this week they kept saying that you have to find something you "enjoy," and that will make you want to get up and move. Well, I DON'T enjoy walking, certainly not running, swimming, hiking, tennis, racketball, weight lifting, land aerobics, bicycling, circuit training, golf, basketball, volleyball...help me folks! What I "enjoy" is sitting at my sewing machine with a movie playing in the background. I am trying really hard to make positive changes though, so I do need to get out and start doing something.

Nella, I'm with you. I have never really felt better after exercise, or had less pain, or enjoyed myself. I would much rather read or do embroidery or beadwork. Now, I have so much pain all the time, and exercise aggravates it and makes it worse. I really don't need more pain! I have tried to look forward to the "eventually it will get better", but it never has. I don't know what the answer is, but at least we both know now that we are not alone.

Woah that's a hard one, don't even like walking. Can't use a love of nature to enjoying walking in it? (short walks in nature, even with a picnic or something - one that's not going to break your diet of course) Or pivot enjoying gardening to walking and getting ideas from other people's gardens (of course that may be unnecessary, as gardening itself could also be exercise). Can't see walking as *exploring* and learning even about history (it's in the landscape - books about this by John Stilgoe and so on). What about gentle yoga (not the hard stuff!!! The easiest most relaxing stuff?). Tai chi? Golf? That's the type of stuff slacker type B's could probably stand. OTOH if you actually are competitive and adventurous there's all the other stuff: tennis, rock climbing whatever. Could certainly just add more exercise into daily life I guess, taking stairs, walking to the store, housework, whatever. Any physical activity you enjoyed as a kid? What about doing it now?
How do you feel worse after exercise? Push yourself too hard? (walk a mile when your really only capable of a block now etc.) Feel it's a waste of time and boring? (what about exercising with a friend or your partner?) Have actual physical problems? If it's actual physical problems maybe there's a darn good reason you shouldn't be exercising until you get them looked at by a doctor (look if someone has angina, or chronic fatigue, or arthritis, or something then they have to be careful with the exercise, their body is right in telling them not to go gung ho).
I guess if all else fails yet you are capable of pushing yourself you could just force yourself to go to the gym despite not liking it.
I have seriously fallen off the WW wagon, and despite being active, can feel the weight coming back. Darn it all. Will renew again this week...
Nella, a woman in my WW group said that when she had a bummed knee, the doctor suggested that she get the Chair Dancing DVD and do that for exercise. I thought it was worth a try and it is fun. Kind of ridiculous but you get a surprisingly good work out. There are several Chair Dancing DVDs out and I plan to get the Chair Dancing Yoga DVD next.
Last week I maintained my weight, nothing gained or lost, which was as much as I had expected. Back on the wagon this week.

Florence, that might be a good idea for me, so I will look into it. I don't mind doing exercise videos, as I prefer to exercise alone and that might not be too hard on my various aches and pains.I had seen those and forgotten about them. Now I will look into them. Thanks! There was also another series of exercise tapes called Sit and Be Fit that I should look at, too. The name just came back to me while reading this thread!

Let us know how you like them. Sit and Be Fit comes on our local PBS station daily. I might give that a try.
I lost 1.6 lb. last week. Total lost 16.6 lb. Weight 158. I was holding my breath about weight loss this week because last week we went to Taste of Texas to celebrate our wedding anniversary. I was fine on points on the main course but there was a glass of wine and I split a piece of cheesecake with DH. I think increasing my time on the stationary bike helped with the wine and cheesecake. LOL!!

At the "taste of" celebrations, you are walking around a bit, so you burn up some of those calories right away.
I've been lucky; I've been losing weight without really putting any effort into it. Since I was in the hospital last year, my appetite has really decreased (look what hospital food can do for you!) and just have not wanted so much to eat. With my joint problems I can't do much exercise,so the weight comes off slowly, but it has been pretty steady. Got on the scale yesterday just out of curiositiy, and found I have lost 8 lbs. in the last 2-3 months. I can live with that!
I only lost .6 # this week. I have been pretty much on plan, but not much exercise. One other concern I have is that perhaps I am eating too much fruit. Even though they are 0 PPts+, if you eat too much, you may not lose. So, this week I am cutting back on those and increasing veggies. This morning I had egg whites on toast, a sliced tomato (with basil and a bit of goat cheese) and some asparagus. It was so good!!
I'll report next week if the fruit cutback worked.
Also, I just received via Amazon a new gadget for my bike which I hope will inspire me more to ride. It is a speedometer, odometer, plus after programming it, you input your age and weight, it computes fat and calories burned off. It took me a while to get in installed and programmed, but I'm excited to use it!

You're right, but I'm trying to lose 10 more lb. before a wedding on July 14, so losing .6/wk isn't gonna cut it!
Last night I rode 4.9 mi. on my bike at an average speed of 7.8 mph. Elapsed time was ~37 min. Burned 166 calories and 3.3 fat grams. I love this new gadget! It's pretty motivating!!

I have a similar gizmo on my stationary bike and it is fun to watch those calories burn!
I lost 0.4 lb last week. Total lost 17 lb. which is 10% of my starting weight. I have lost 17 lb. in 16 weeks. Weight 157.6 lb. I am rewarding myself with a manicure.
I have learned a couple of things about myself and eating. The first thing is that I need a certain volume to feel satisfied. I can get that volume and be just as happy with a big bowl of veggies as with a big bag a chips. It's the volume that I want. Second, sugar is not my friend. Sugar just makes me want more sugar.
Anyway, onward to the next 10%.
WTG, Florence! I missed my meeting last night due to things beyond my control.
Last week I lost 1 lb. Total lost 18 lb. Weight 156.6 lb.
Am finally in Richmond and one of my first tasks was to find a WW meeting. There's a center not too far from me and I went and weighed in yesterday morning. After a week of being on the road and of unpacking and getting settled I was happy to have gained only .8 of a pound. Not too bad for a lot of meals that weren't very healthy. Boy is it tough to find points worthy food when you're traveling! So, back on the wagon as of today. I also went and signed up at my local YMCA. It's a smaller one, but it has a pool which is what I was really looking for. I can use my Silver Sneakers plan here so there's no reason not to get moving!
How're we doin' everybody. It's been awhile since I've seen any of your posts. Today I weighed in with a .4 pound loss. Not spectacular, but at least it's in the right direction! Has summer been harder or easier on your weight loss goals?
Gosh I have found Weight Watchers to be helpful too here on the other side of the pond. It seems to be a very sensible plan. I have been going along to the meetings each week and so far, OK it has been 9 months but I have lost a total of 22.5 pounds. I feel much better and when I get my BP checked later this month I hope that the doctor might say that I can either come of the medication or at least cut down. I initially wanted to lose just the 10% of my weight that they say is good for one's health but I have managed a few more pounds as well. Slowly but surely.
I am able to walk much further and usually walk the 1.5 miles to the class each week - if it is not raining too hard!
One bonus for me from attending the meetings was that I met an old work colleage that I had not seen for almost 17 years!
Way to go iforonwy! I feel better too and my knees are much better. I have another 20 lb to go and I will get there when I get there. In the meanwhile, I am eating sooooo much healthier!
I hope you get to cut back on your BP meds; be sure to post and let us know how you are doing. It helps to encourage all of us!
Welcome Iforonwy! Good to know that if I ever get to move to Europe (someting I've wanted to do for decades now) that WW is there and waiting for me. I have a considerably larger amount of weight still to lose. It's coming off, slowly, but at least it's coming off!

I am back to Weight Watchers--I was eating much healthier and feeling better on a lower-carb diet, but not losing any weight. (I am very petite, so I do not need many calories a day and it is really easy to go over the amount at which I lose, even eating small portions of healthy food.) But the advantage is that six months of doing that made it really easy to transition to the new Weight Watchers--when I tried it before, right around the time they switched point systems, I found it really difficult because I wasn't used to that approach to eating and I fell back into old carb-focused habits. Also, I think their original revised points target (something like 29, wasn't it?) was just too high for me. Now I am at 26 points, and the first week I lost 1.2 lbs, so I think this is a good choice...
I wondered what the weekly points were in the USA. Here I am on 26 points and I have 49 "play points" per week. I must admit I do tend to use up one or three points a day from those extras. But I also keep moving. I have never been one for organised exercise but as I don't drive I do tend to walk quite a lot in a day. I was using a pedodmeter but I lost it - I think it must be somewhere on the A30 when we got out of the car to call the breakdown truck a couple of weeks ago.
I think I need to lose about another 12 pounds to get to my target weight. I will be pleased if I manage that before our trip Stateside in early September.
I will see if I can locate the WW USA website and take a look on there for a little guidance for the trip.
iforonwy, Here's the web site. http://www.weigh****chers.com/plan/index.aspx
If you know the city/zip code of the areas you're going to be visiting, you can put it in at the bottom of this page and find meetings near you. What part of the country are you planning to visit? Be careful of all the fast food places we have here in the states. They are abundant with very few healthy choices. There are some, but it's almost better just to plan to picinic for most meals with foods you've purchased at the market.
ETA: Dang the censor software. Just put "weight watchers" with no spaces in the web address...
Thanks for that Nella. Yes we are very aware of portion size. We have been visiting the USA from time to time since 1982. One trick my DH and I have is that we have a good breakfast and then we picnic for lunch. For our main evening meal if we are in a restaurant we go for the Senior Menu and then quite often share that. One has a main course and the other a dessert, two sets of cutlery!
This time, as usual, we will be visiting with family and friends so there will not be a great deal of fast food on the menu. This time we are flying into Boston and then travelling up to Michigan to visit friends and then back down to Kansas to visit family before driving back to Boston.
Well, this has certainly been a better week than the previous week when I had gained 1.4 lb. This week I lost 0.6 lb.; total lost 17.2 lb.; weight 157.4 lb.
I couldn't go to WW last week because it was pouring rain, the streets were flooded, and traffic was a mess. So this is a 2 week report. I lost 2.6 lb. Total lost 19.8 lb. weight 154.8 lb. I am certainly feeling better as the weight comes off!
You're doing great...I hope that you feel good about yourself!
Sorry I've been absent several weeks. I'm in an intensive Ancient Hebrew class in seminary (two terms of language crammed into 7 weeks) and it's been all I can do just to get to class, study, and shower every once in while. Seriously, that's about all I do. Anyway, I did get to a WW office yesterday as I had to go grocery shopping and it's nearby. I showed a 6 pound weight loss. Don't get too excited, that's over three weeks and the last time I weighed in I had gained almost four pounds. Although that was a "late in the day, wearing my heavy jeans" kind of weigh in. Anyway, I figure I've netted about a 2 pound loss over the three weeks. Not too bad considering my only "recreation" is looking for what food's in the refrigerator and my only exercise is walking to class and back.
How is everyone else doing? Are you all having a busy and productive summer? Getting lots of activity points? Trying to stay away from the high points side dishes at BBQs? Those summer cocktails are awfully tempting, not that I would know anything about that this summer. It would be good to hear again from every one who have been posting on this thread. Hopefully it won't be another three weeks before I'm able to get back to check in again!
Well I am on my way to my next 7lbs Silver Seven. Hope to get to it before we fly to your side of the pond. I am averaging just over a half and pound per week loss. Not great I know but it means that 25 pounds have gone. Just aiming for that 28 pound - 2 stone - total loss.
It's been 2 months since I stopped tracking, so of course I have gained! I am a compulsive overeater, and it's my first line of defense with stress...
So, back on the program today. Since May I have had a 15# loss then re-gain; I need to lose a minimum of 40#. Yuck. Trying not to slip into despair about this lifelong disease...
It's been 2 months since I stopped tracking, so of course I have gained!....Don't beat yourself up. You're back on track and that's what counts. Take a breath and just start from today.
...I am averaging just over a half and pound per week loss. Not great I know but it means that 25 pounds have gone... "Tortoise and the hare...tortoise and the hare." It's become one of my mantras. I've also adopted from the more contemporary vernacular of Nemo, "Just keep swimming, just keep swimming." Alright enough cutsie...but I do believe that slow and steady (yes, one more) does win the race!
Good to hear from you guys. Florence, you out there anywhere?

Thanks... It's been a week of beating myself up over many things... <sigh> one of my family of origin legacies, I am afraid. It jumps me pretty regularly...

Crap, I'be backslid as well. This hot beastly weather slows me down. I haven't attended a WW meeting for, what, 6 weks maybe? or it is 2 months? eek. I've gained some of it back.
I'm down a total of 19.4 lb but last week I had gained 0.4 lb. I can't think why I gained but the scales said I did. Anyway, Thursday is my meeting and weigh in and I hope there's no repeating last week's gain. I have increased exercise to 29 minutes and 1 set of arm lifts with 2 lb weights.
This week I lost 1.6 lb. Total lost 21 lb. Weight 153.4 lb. The best part of all this is that we are eating healthier than we ever have and learning how to cook & eat to stay healthy.
I was doing pretty well and then went on vacation with a friend who loves to eat, and not necessarily all that healthily. I did regain a pound but I look at it this way--if I hadn't been doing WW, I would have ended up even heavier, I made the better choice wherever I could (sushi restaurant rather than Italian, just one glass of wine in the evening) and enjoyed them, and to be honest, I realized how much healthier I am eating on an everyday basis than I used to.
Happy Dance---I made 50# (actually 52) loss this week!!:)

Weight Watchers Report: Lost 0.8 lb. Total lost 21.6 lb. Weight 153 lb. I am so looking forward to getting under 150 lb!
Hurdles this coming week:
Family birthday party for Aunt Liz's 89th birthday
Neighborhood Ice Cream Social
With prior planning, I can keep to my 26 points per day!~!
I made it to a total loss of 26lbs this week bringing me to a weight of 150 pounds. It has taken 45 weeks to get to this. I had hoped to loose the full 2 stones, 28lbs, before my holiday but I don't think I can do that - 2lbs in 10days -. So I will try very hard to stick to my 26 points per day and I will have a weight-in at the group on Wednesday next week.
I will be bringing my pocket guide along with me to help with meals on the road and I have 2 Weekly Trackers to bring along too. I usually track on-line so I will be focussed if I need to write everything down each day.
I was at the doctor's this week for a pre-holiday Fit to Travel check and my BP was the lowest it has been in years!
I'm finally back on track! I was really thrown a curve ball by this Biblical Hebrew class I've been in for the last 7 weeks. I passed, but just barely, so I'm off to Old Testament beginning with the Fall term. My diet, especially the last two weeks has been horrific. I don't think I've cooked for myself more than a couple of times. Group study sessions always included food, usually pizza, and most days the stress of the class just overcame my common sense. So, I need to get back to a weigh-in to see what the damage is. No meetings here in my area on Sunday or Monday, so I'll be reporting back next Tuesday. Hmm....wonder how much I can lose in 48 hours. ;)
I lost 0.4 lb. last week. I had been on a plateau-- not gaining but not losing either. We decided that I wasn't eating enough so I upped the veggies and fruit and that seems to have me back to losing again. My WW leader said that when we don't take in enough food our metabolism goes into starvation mode and we don't lose fat. Whatever the reason, I'm glad to be losing again. So I have lost a total of 22 lb. and my current weight is 152.6 lb.
I lost 1.2 lb. last week. Total lost 23.2 lb. Weight 151.4 lb. It seems to be taking forever to get through the 150s!!
Well, here it is the 20th of September and I'm just now checking in. I'm confessing to you all that I haven't weighed in once in the last three weeks. I know, I know... Had a visitor who came out to my grad school for a week and then it was right back into classes. My car hasn't moved from it's parking spot now for two weeks as I've done nothing but go to class, go to the library (where I am right now) and back to my apartment here on campus. I'm committed to getting to a meeting tomorrow or Saturday. I'm scared to see what kind of damage I've done, but I've got to face the music and get back on the horse. Okay, enough with the cliches!
Well we got back from your side of the pond on Tuesday and last night was weigh in at WWs. I had lost a half a pound and been away for 2 weeks! I also went to a WW meeting near Chicago and found it very interesting an not really very different from here. I am down to 148.5 at class and 146.5 on my home scales.
Nice to hear from everyone!
Not a good week. Gained 0.8 lb. Total lost 22.4 lb. Weight 152.2 lb. Next week will be better!!
Well, I've been off the meeting "wagon" for a month due to circumstances beyond my total control. Went Wednesday night and was ecstatic to find I had not gained anything! Didn't lose either; stayed exactly the same.
Now with the Thanksgiving Challenge, I am totally onboard and motivated again. I hope to achieve the 16 lb. by Thanksgiving goal. At that point, I will be very close--within 12 or so lb.-- of my WW goal! that almost sounds do-able now!!
ETA--is anyone else doing the Thanksgiving Challenge? (Sorry--I haven't read back in the posts)
I am doing the Thanksgiving Challenge. I am going for 8 lb in 8 weeks.
I've been rather remiss about posting my weight loss but I have not abandoned the program. This week I lost 0.8 lb. Total lost 24.2 lb. Weight 150.4 lb. setting the pace for the world's slowest weight loss...
I lost 1.8 lb. last week. Total lost 25 lb. Weight 149.6 lb. 14.6 lb. to go to get to goal weight.
How are you WW-ers doing? Are you liking the new enhancements to the program? Do you use the Active Link? I got one and I like it, although I am kind of a gadget goof.
Are you on e-tools? Or do you track on paper only? I just use a 3-month paper tracker...
I ws slightly up this week because I went to TX to visit family and overdid. Back on the wagon now!!
Wow, Kay! Woo hoo! I am back on, as my joint pain is getting to be too much. 50# gone is my goal. I'd love to be at -35 by my birthday, May 1st. This time, I am looking for an in-person group in addition to online. I'd love to hear everyone's tips. Food management is really hard for me.
I'm still at it. It is going very, very slowly. I've lost 25 lb since last February and still have 15 lb to lose. I would rather make small permanent changes in my food choices than make drastic changes to lose quickly and not be able to keep it off. BTDT. My major problem was sugar. A little sugar just makes me crave more. I really like being able to eat fruit when I get hungry--an apple and a 2point piece of cheese will really keep the munchies at bay for me. I track online. I have not tried the Active Link. Good to hear from everyone!
Sugar is the big problem for me, too. Last week I went off all wheat products again and have dropped 5# since, am now almost to my preferred weight. I seem to have a mild wheat allergy; it makes me very congested. I've been feeling higher-energy since dropping it again and am reminding myself how bad it makes me feel even when I don't eat too much of it.
The Sugar Sisters! That's who we are! This time of year it's so hard too...so many goodies around! Good job, Rosemary! I'm looking forward to the day when I can say I'm very close or at my goal weight!
The Sugar Sisters! I love it, Kay! We're just a bunch of sweeties!
Yesterday we had our staff luncheon provided by Personnel. So many things I passed on with a "No, thank you." THEN the dessert tray came by. They were so proud of it, kept urging all of us to take more than one---I tried to pass, but they kept urging, so I took ONE small one. Took one bite, put it down, and that was all. Pretty proud of that.
Everyone have a great weekend! Stay on track if you can---

Good for you! I detest food pushers... many in my family, along with eating disorders and weight problems. It sux.
Woo-hoo! I lost 3# this past week. I am determined to stay in control during the long Christmas weekend so as to not gain it back.
Like you probably did if you went to a meeting, we talked at mine about how to "deal" with all the trappings, offerings and food nemeses this week. I have decided I simply cannot deprive myself of fudge. So, knowing I am going to my cousin's on Tuesday (he always has an eclectic, exotic array of food), I am going to really look things over, eat wisely on plan, then indulge in one piece or two, eating them slowly and savoring every bite. And. that. will. be. all.
You? Do you have a strategy?
About a year ago, I was veering too far into Samo Hung territory,

Cute photos.
Okay, I need some support and this looks like a good place. I know KNOW that wheat, dairy and SUGAR are not good for me. For about three weeks I have been flirting with the wheat and dairy, with predictable results....body aches, joint pain on waking, interrupted sleep, brain fog and allergic rhinitis. These symptoms are much LESS than what I was experiencing before I went off those things but back then I had no idea that my diet was creating such troubles for me. Anyway, I seem to behave as if these things are addictive; if I have some I want and crave and seek out and EAT more. If I make sure I have enough protein, interesting vegetables and good fats, I can sometimes slow myself down but I have not been able to have a "clean" day in over a week and I don't think the next three days are going to do it for me either.
I am disappointed in myself because I had thought I had gotten past the self-delusion phase; that those holiday cookies and fudge were really not for me, but nobody else has been eating them. I didn't need to make them at all: DH is planning on NO cookies until The Day and then he will be very moderate. And DSD is with her mom, so this is really all about my food issues.
I guess I need to remind myself of no shame, no blame, and start from here but how? Or should I start from Wednesday? It is too easy and an old pattern to just give up and eat whatever arrives for the next five or six days but that will put me even further behind where I am now (still needing to lose five more ....maybe more than that now....pounds.
Arrgggghhhhh! Sorry for the angst. I am sure it will all be fine and I am grateful that this is my complaint. Life is pretty darn good if your problem is that you have too much good food to eat.

What works for me? Start today. It's easier to start and have the decision made than to think about it every time I see one of those foods. I'm off all wheat and it makes life easier, not harder. Bread? No, thanks. Cookies? No, thanks. Cake? No, thanks.
Giving up wheat immediately removes a lot of unnecessary calories and sugar from my diet. Every time I try eating it again, I gain 5# very quickly, and get very congested to boot (seem to have a mild allergy). When I eliminate wheat, the 5# vanishes within 4 days.

Thanks, Rosemary. Your elimination diet blog was extremely helpful to me (we were eliminating at the same time). Wheat is pretty hard on my system but sugar is so ..... I don't know what. I just crave it, and crave it. I could ditch alcohol for the rest of my life and not miss it but sugar....yet when I have been clean from it for a week or so I don't even want any. This is so peculiar. It so clearly is NOT will power. Well, I guess I need will power to get back to clean but the cravings are not psychological.
Today is has been the spiced pecans. At least there is protein and fat there so the sugar doesn't give me rushes but I have to stay out of the chocolate. And wheat is out; that was easier. I have avoided wheat for almost two days so things should be starting to be a bit better. I also went for a walk this morning (have been overworking and underexercising for about six weeks) despite the really miserable cold and wind. So two things are pointing in the right direction.
leslieann, i understand. I love and crave sugar, too. I have decided that I can be off wheat and that will cut out most of the sugar, but I can have some sugar and desserts that don't involve wheat, such as pudding (I make it with almond milk), pumpkin custard, fruit crisp, and ice cream on occasion (no cones). This is working for me now. Also, when I want something sweet I'll try a dried apricot, date, or fig first.

That's my approach now, give in to sugar but seldom have wheat. And I don't get crashes or feel bad from sugar much anymore (without wheat), or get as out of control around it, and my digestion seems better. Of course I have still at times consumed an entire chocolate bar, so it's not much of a weight loss strategy.
I can't eat chocolate due to reflux, so that cuts another sugar source. And when I make dessert at home I generally use pureed dates, honey, or maple syrup in place of sugar, and less sweetener than is listed on recipes; both techniques seem to reduce the addictive nature of sweets for me.
Do any of you get the Weight Watchers magazine? I do. It's currently the only magazine I receive. I haven't tried a recipe from the mag that has not been good or successful. Yesterday I received the latest issue and there was a recipe for Asian salmon patties...SO good, and very simple, baked. Only 5 points.
Hi everyone! I haven't been to visit this thread in a long time but as goal weight is in sight I thought I would take a look at how you are all doing - for some inspiration. We are off travelling in 5 weeks time and I would love to be at goal by then. Just 5 pounds to go but the leader says 7 pounds - I don't mind it would take me down into the next stone so to speak.
I put on 1 pound over the Christmas/New Year period and lost it last week.
With regard to the WW magazine I purchased a copy when I was stateside in September and found it to be a facinating read. Over here in the UK there are 2 versions. The one you buy at meetings is thincker, more pages, than the one from newsagents. I think it also has more coupons for WW products in it. I think I have only purchsed one in the UK. I like to collect the weekly booklets at the meetings. I went to a meeting Stateside and find that the UK weekly booklets have much more info and lots more recipes.
I am doing better this winter than any other. My winter weight is always higher than my summer weight because of more celebrations and no gardening, less outdoor exercise. In summer I move all day. In winter I spend more time sitting doing crafts, watching movies, reading. But by dropping the wheat and associated sugar I've managed to keep my weight gain to 3 pounds instead of about 8.
