Our friends shamed us into buying a dining room table, a bigger one. I thought that I was beyond peer pressure, but I guess not.

Anyway, it is miraculous that we found a dining room table that both DH and I love. I am stunned. There is not one other piece of furniture in this house that BOTH of us love.

This table is Victorian. We think it is made of chestnut wood, it's a pretty red color. It is round and small without the leaves and works in our dining area for every day. For special occasions it has 5 leaves that extend it out to 7'. It has been modified several times (the extenders have been rebuilt, the table top is wonky, the legs are built up) and is not whole, like most of my furniture, but the finish is original and it is pretty and I love it.

That's fantastic!

'Come on Iris Lily, everybody's doin' it. Look at the detailed inlay and craftsmanship, just try it. This stuff doesn't come through town often."

Fantastic. I am still learning that the right furniture is important. It can make or break the feel of your house. Congrats on your success!

I go with my gut. I have a gut feeling that turns on when I see something I love. I still analyze it intellectually, but it's gotta make my gut happy. I am still amazed that DH likes it. We REALLY do not see eye to eye on furniture.

One thing that I really love about trying to follow simple living (however you interpret it, as we can see from board there are a boo-koo (sp) of ways).... is that what I DO CHOSE to bring into my life is thought out and intentional and ADORED and LOVED

Great you found a table you love, instead of just a table you could live with. I am very picky about most of our furniture (except the upholstered stuff. If I can throw a sheet over it, it will do, lol). But the table, cupboards, shelves, benches, straight chairs, chests - those have to really speak to me - sing, even! Congrats on finding something that you both love, I know how hard that can be.

hey, it's true that there are some in my crowd that buy, and I am not exaggerating, museum quality Victorian furniture. Our friend bid on a walnut secretary across the country, and he didn't get it. He walked into the St. Louis Art Museum the next month and there it was. He travels all over the country buying this stuff, and he's since turned on many in my 'nabe to it. He consults and advises, and then some people buys his old stuff as he trades up.

But the Iris Lily household doesn't go after that level of collecting. I like re-built pieces that are missing limbs but with pretty finishes. IMy furniture, with one exception, is well under $1,000 each.
