What a great inspirational story! Imagine what a wonderful world this would be without the whirring sound of machines and things?
Second what Mrs-M said.
I ride for fun and in my mind have dreams of only biking. How happy and friendly 99% of bikers are I see. I can not say that about drivers. It is possible, yet as I think of the 80 bags of mulch I need today, I would have to make 160 bike trips :(
We have a picture of a man in India moving furniture around stacked on a bicycle. In fact, it was amazing what they could do on one. They stack it and tie it off and always seem to be carrying 150% or more of what we might even think about.
I actually thought for a moment about getting the mulch on my bike after this post. It would have been 8 miles round trip with about two bags at a time. Ok I have the time and energy. Then the sprinkling started and it is 39 :( I guess I fall into the lazy american group today. But since I only got 8 bags today, I have a few more trips to make so maybe I will get a few on the bike.
I think it is because many of us are generally used to connivence of autos, not that we really can not do it on a bike. Time is also a factor, which many do not have enough of. On the bike board I visit the commutes people make daily are amazing. One fellow is commuting 35ish miles each way in Ohio, so not great weather daily. He has to start work at 1am so dark riding too. I posted this seemed unreal to me, maybe twice a week, but everyday. The commuters there told me NO it Was do able. I ride for fun and would have no problem a few times during good weather, but daily and bad weather and wwwwork, nope could not do it.

As I sit here at the computer I hear a chain saw. It is whacking out large swaths of junk trees across the street. Yesterday, all day, and I mean ALL DAY for 8 hours, a jackhammer was running across the street.
To this all I say : YAY! Way to GO! The chainsaw is doing god's work, wreaking havoc on The Enemy. The jack hammer is operating on the house they are building.
We've lived here for 22 years where an abandoned building was the only sign of human life across the street. Now there are new houses going up and we are delirious with joy at the activity and noise that is taking place in our part of the neighborhood.
When we moved in, there were boarded up houses on my block that street people would regularly break into, start fires, hang out, use drugs. There here hypodermic needles strewn about our yard. The building across the street operated as a homeless shleter for women (and close dup soon after we moved in.) It was ghetto, but now it's not.
I say, Vive le construction and the man-built environment! Bring on the machines!

Oh I love this! It's SO Pacific Northwest!
When I lived in San Francisco and didn't own a car, I carried the craziest things on my bike. From one dozen long-stemmed roses in a box, to bags and bags of groceries on my weekly run to the store, it was always fun to challenge myself and see how much stuff I could haul using my own power!
