View Full Version : what current styles do you dislike? Like?
The thread about jeans got me to thinking about how I am having a hard time finding clothes I like lately. I don't really like drapy tops, skinny pants or ballet flat shoes and that seems to be what is around right now. I do however like the fact that one can wear pretty much what they please these days.
Well, I'm thrilled about the ballet flats! I've loved ballet flats since the 70s, when I regularly bought Pappagallo flats at an outlet in Nyack, NY. Now, it's all I wear. I have casual ballet flats, fancy ballet flats, old ballet flats for around the house, nice ballet flats for going through security at the airport, I have beige, black, blue, wingtip, little bow, eyelet styles... they are so me.
As far as other stuff, I don't really know what's in style?? I guess I should. But I do like the little three-quarter length sweaters and pencil skirts. Gee, it all seems like it's a throwback from the 50s in some ways.
I'm having a hard time finding attractive shoes for work, eg 1-2" inch heel in a normal color without a whole lot of embellishment. I'm really not liking these sky high shoes, with the big platform bottom. They look so hard to walk around in.
I'm with ya on the skinny jeans, I'm just too heavy to wear them and look good. I liked fitted tops, anything blousy and I look really frumpy.
One trend that doesn't impact me personally, is the straight across strapless dress, usually a wedding dress. It looks good on almost no one other than the slender, and is usually not very flattering to the neck. When I see them on TV, there is always overage spilling out the top and sides. Or as my dad used to say, trying to put 10 pounds of potatoes into a 5 pound bag.

I hate the ways that all the 100% cotton clothes now seem to be "wrinkle free", which means that they no longer breathe, so you might as well be wearing polyester in hot weather.....I long for just untreated, soft, 100% cotton stuff......wwwaaaahhhhhh
Along the lines of herbgeek, one that doesn't really impact me because I rarely wear them: flip flops. I foresee a lot of 20-somethings with bigtime back problems in a few years. And since most of them are cheap garbage, it was always a disaster when the little girls would have them as their sole (haha) footwear at school and they would break. No backups. I thought we should have outlawed them. Not safe for recess or generally just playing around, at least in the school setting. Unfortunately, teachers/school staff cannot allow students to go around barefoot because someone could (not likely to, but hey, that's society) get hurt.
I've worn the same 'uniform' for years- knit shirts, cardigan sweaters, knit skirts/dresses and clogs for shoes. In the summer I like knit dresses and sandals. I've always had trouble finding pants that fit, except for yoga pants. I also prefer my skirts to be longer (mid-calf) since I'm tall. Some years those are hard to find.
I really wanted some simple dresses this summer and can't find any! I'll keep looking.
Flip flops I agree are horrible for feet, back, neck. Our foot Dr said NEVER EVER WEAR THEM. I do wear some that are Clark's but they have a tiny bit of heal and good padding.

Oh yes, there can be good ones and even I am guilty of the occasional use of el-crap-o flip flops, mainly around the house in summer. But never out own the town - owie. DH has some awesome Chaco flip flops.

Oh dear. I've been wearing crappy flip-flops all my life. (all 55 years of it, pretty much ;)). I am also quite overweight and a bit under-tall. My feet, knees, hips, and back are in wonderful shape though - might be good genes. DD bought me a pair of Birkenstocks, which are supposed to be good for your feet - and I cannot stand them. Different feet for different people, lol.

whoa. really? ack.
I guess this stuff hasn't hit the thrift stores yet. Cotton is my fabric, love it. I will take cotton with a little bit of stretch poly fabric, but not much.

I'm just tired of the trend of strapless wedding dresses and wish it would end.
I heartily agree that the whole strapless everything is so overdone. What's wrong with sleeves. What I don't like right now, is a very "Plasticy" look. Overly tanning booth tans, very artificial looking skin, huge eyelashes. Kind of over the platforms. Although, for me, it's moot. It's just what I see. I haven't worn any kind of heel in over 30 years. I don't own a dress or a skirt either.
But....I'm so glad to see the end, finally of belly shirts and muffin tops!
I hate the tendency that's been around for a few years for women to wear regular bras under spaghetti strap or other tops that show their bra straps in all their glory.
C'mon, if you're going to wear a top like that, get a strapless bra! I was always taught that to show your lingerie is just tacky and lacking in class. It was especially bad to see young women (who were later warned about it) showing up for work in spaghetti straps and showing their bra straps off. Yeck.
I'm fairly relaxed in the like/dislike department when it comes to apparel, however, my husband loathes summer shorts with cargo-styled pockets on them! And, he will not wear dressy shirts with button-down pockets! Shirt pockets have to be of the open design. Them's the rulz...
I really tend to stay with basic, clean lines, rather plain clothing...I don't like patterns or lots of stuff going on with my clothes like ruffles or embellishments.
Tradd: I'm with you on the bra strap thing - not attractive!
I find the current style of leggings with a short shirt and knee boots to be an unfortunate one because it looks good on almost nobody. You really need a perfect, well-toned figure to pull it off, but apparently not everyone got that memo.
I also dislike capris, although I know they are very popular. I think they tend to make women look shorter and heavier, and I don't often hear anyone say they are striving to look shorter or heavier. I won't wear shorts either, so I know I'm a minority on this one. I like long flowy dresses for casual wear in the really hot weather. Those can work well for all types of figures.

If you saw me, it would be obvious that clothing styles is probably the last thing I have any concern about or expertise in. Frankly, it is hard for me to care less about anything else. Like Tradd, I was raised with the notion that showing parts of your lingerie (i.e., bra straps) is tacky and low-class. For heaven's sake, if you have the money to buy tops with spaghetti straps, then you should have the money to buy proper lingerie, or leave the spaghetti straps in the store! I am beyond tired of young men with baggy pants showing all and sundry their underwear, though I am glad they are wearing some. Buy a belt, guys, or use a piece of rope.
Frankly, I wish everyone would keep their underwear and various types of cleavage undercover. We all have it, I know what it looks like, and I have no need to see anyone else's. When you are my age, it will sag, and no one wants to see that, either.
Remember, gravity is no one's friend.
Off my crabby old lady's soapbox now.
I think capris /can/ look good on some women (like Mary Tyler Moore as Laura Petrie in the Dick Van Dyke show), but I've never seen cropped pants look good on /anyone/.
I know capris make people look shorter and yet I pull on a pair almost every day. I just can't bring myself to wear pants in the summer and I'm having a hard time finding new skirts/dresses to wear (super tired of the ones I've had for years). And I shouldn't wear shorts to the church office - though no one would mind because I'm the only one there.
Give me simple classic pants, some good blouses, a neat vest for warmth, a good variety of pins for jewelry and I am set. I have some popover sundresses to wear on muggy days from an old pattern that I found at a yard sale.
Got to laugh. I have wanted a long denim skirt that looks good for years. I was at our local fabric and discount store and found a perfect skirt for $1 so I bought 2 of them. They fit so well and look good.
Being culturally illiterate when it comes to fashion has distinct advantages. I'm usually perfectly fine with something from the sale table that no one else considered wearable.

I love ballet flats and the flat tall boots that have been popular the past couple years. I also love flip flops and sandals. I have a super high arch and was told flip flops would actually help my feet, I guess I am a foot anomaly. The dr actually asked me if I live in heels...LOL...I've had issues with being "too tall" since I can remember so I hate anything over a one inch heel or so. I love kitten heels even though they are not "in" right now.
I hate leggings...please go away style. I refuse to wear them except under a dress (in place of tights). I see way too many people wearing them with to short of shirts for my taste. I also loathe capris, cropped pants, anything of that nature. Not flattering on me at all and don't look that great on most other people.
I loathe this return of the 80s florescent block letter shirts. All the sorority girls around here have been wearing them for the past year or so. Its hideous, but it may be a localized style. Also, for the past few years the workout short of choice among the college girls has been the nike tempo...I am always amused when that one changes. Its bound to in a year or so. Then they all go out and buy the new "in" workout short...I've been through Umbros in the 90s, Soffee late 90s/early 2000s, now Nike.
I still like flared jeans even though they are not in right now. I guess I could care less since I have been wearing the same pair of jeans as my favorites for about 8 years! I don't know what I am going to do when they finally give up the ghost. A few years ago really cute sundresses with a line skirts were popular, with little straps...I like those too. The trendy folks have started wearing spring dresses this year and I am not liking the new styles.
Also, I have naturally wavy long hair but I hate the wavy styles that are popular for long hair. I tried to recreate and it took an hour to do...I am a wash and wear kind of girl. I do not spend an hour on my hair to make it look like I didn't do anything to it, LOL.
Ha ha, fashion maven Simon Doonan calls this Porn Star Chic and he decries it too! Very LA.
The eyesore phenom in big cities is very real. I have to walk a certain street most days that is just thronging with people, and it's especially nutty right now at the start of tourist season. Young girls - and even women my age now - insist on pouring themselves into stretchy leggings, and forget to finish getting dressed. They don't seem to mind that every bulge and bump on their backsides are visible to absolutely everyone. It's so classless. Gah! Even skinny girls look bad in these. I was just looking at some after-swim skirts online - so cute - how hard would it be to just get a cheap cotton stretch skirt, or any kind of skirt really, and pull it on over the leggings? Or wrap a sweater around your buns? You're in the city honey, not in the backyard at somebody's redneck barbecue! (Nothing against redneck barbecues, btw - my family have had plenty of great ones! ;)))

I so agree. I want to run up and offer them a sweater to cover up.
I just recently became aware of the neon-thing going on (and I live and work in the middle of a large college town)! I went to one the young'uns stores the other week to purchase some colorful camisole tops to wear under my blouses and saw rack upon rack of awful neon...I really don't have much of a style anymore, since I have firmly latched onto the '70s boot cut jeans and brown harness boots look that I have cultivated the last 10 or 12 years...every once in a while I get a compliment about how "cool" I look (that is if you saw Easy Rider when it first came out)! It is the look I am most comfortable in and now that my crazy red hair is shoulder -length now, I feel like I am BACK! Last May's hair chopping is behind me.
I hate, hate , hate shopping because I can never find pants that are flattering; it shouldn't be so hard, as I am 5'9" with long legs but have a bit of the dreaded "muffin" that gets hidden under fitted blouses as best it can! I find it is very hard to know how to dress and actually find good-fitting clothing at age 50; there just isn't much of a a sub-demographic group of 50 year old female guitar shop employees...I can't stand looking like I am trying to fit into younger women's styles, 'cause that would look just so silly at my age! I just want to play up the shape I have (of which I am ever so grateful for) hence sticking with the same old-same old '70s style I've been in forever.
PS: I get great entertainment when I eat lunch and people-watch outside at work. Sometimes I just shake my head at the severe lack of style and grace that I witness. This mid-western town is NOT known for its fashion acumen....:)
Ha ha, neon, yeah, it's strong, like straight gin - not great by itself, but it can work combined with something else. I just saw something cute in a shop window - a stretchy neon tank with a pretty white crochet thing over it. Wasn't sure if it was a big scarf or a drapey top - it was knotted on the side. The hot pink looked nice peeking out intermittently behind the crochet pattern.
Your style sounds great, and since your guitar shop job is flexible on attire, you can look like anything you want. Envious!
A glance at the mall purveyors of clothing intended for my age group is pretty shudder-incuding. I'm not ready for boxy homeroom teacher cardigans in awful shapes and terrible patterns, and I never will be. (Although those places can be great place to shop during the holidays, if your fave pub is having an Ugly 70's Christmas Sweater and Moustache Contest!)

Just say no to day-glo.
H*** no, no day-glo! Actually, I found out this time around it's been appropriated by the hip-hop crowd, which is not a style of music that speaks to me. I'm just an old punk-hippie chic at heart!
Most of my clothes are old because I haven't found anything newer that I like. The shirts made of that tissue fabric that you can poke a finger through, and you'd better be wearing a decent bra underneath. I also hate underwear showing when it shouldn't.
I see many girls/younger women walking around thinking they look hot when their clothes are barely containing them. Trashy! And what was the purpose of the trend of wearing pants that look like pajama bottoms outside? And flip flops--lots of people like them but to me it seems as if they've given up. Can't be bothered to wear decent shoes so we'll just throw these on. They were originally meant to be worn in the shower. Bad for your feet, think plantar fascititis.
I do like capris. With a nice shirt and pair of sandals, it can look casual but neat. Great if you're going someplace and don't want to shave your entire leg : )
I wish the low-rise pants would die a horrible death already. Most woman have a muffin top in them, and why wear pants with a waistline that accentuates the widest part of your body? And seeing someone's thong peeking out from underneath makes me want to vomit.
To me it's such a shame that everyone dresses so casually here. No, not exactly casual, but sloppy. A t-shirt with a designer's name on it is still a t-shirt. It can be neat if it's not wrinkled and worn tucked into a nice pair of pants, but it never is. It seems that people can't be bothered to dress up for anything anymore.
I also hate underwear showing when it shouldn't.
Lol. Made me snort a little. Is there a time when it should?
Tradd: I'm with you on the bra strap thing - not attractive!

I don't wear shorts or skirts, so capris are the only option for me in summer.
Regarding flip flops. Growing up, it was di rigueur in the summer time. I never wear flip flops in showers. I prefer a sandal but then tend to be bulky river sandals not cute little sandals which are just as bad for your feet as a flip flop. I think sometimes worse depending on the support.
I like most of the current styles - except the crazy thick bottomed (platform) high heels that are out there. UGH, makes women look like they are wearing slabs of wood on their feet while they totter around on stilts trying not to fall.
I live where it's hot so pretty much wear shorts and tee shorts/tank tops year round and don't get a chance to wear most of the style that are out there. But if I were somewhere colder, I'd wear leggings (but not skinny jeans) with long tunic sweaters/shirts/dresses or skirts with boots or flats. I like the "new" '70's look that is out now - tight flare legged jeans with slit pockets, chunky wedge sandals, and those slightly off the shoulder blousy cotton bohemian type tops. But, even though I like the look, I probably am too much of a cheapskape to BUY anything that's trendy so will stick with what I have and love - shorts and tennies most days and Levi boot cut low rise jeans, fitted tee shirts, and low heeled "biker style" boots when wearing pants. I have a real problem finding pants to fit me (tall and thin) except Levis. I also wear running shorts, stretchy bike shorts and capri lenght workout pants (stretchy fitted lycra things)alot but mostly for working out in. Wear regular capri pants too but not often. Prefer longer bermuda shorts instead.
I also don't wear flip-flops because of the lack of support, so now wear firmer slip on sandals or flip flop. Cost more but last longer, looks better, feel better, and are better for you too.

Most of the time my usual uniform is cargo pants or jeans, a t-shirt (with or without sleeves), and sneakers or those outdoorsy men's sandals with the velcro straps. However, there are several styles of alternative fashion that I really love, like steampunk, goth, fairy kei, decora (and harajuku in general), mori girl, cyber punk, renfaire-type stuff, and a lot 80s inspired stuff, big chunky shoes, unnatural hair colors, and yep, neon. On the more normal side (lol), I like the look of flared jeans, cargo pants/shorts, classic camouflage, raglan t-shirts, ruffled skirts and shirts (though not on me lol), and big chunky boots. Here's a sample of some of the styles that I like (I LOVE this site): http://jmaxamillion.polyvore.com/

I like the "new" '70's look that is out now
We must truly be behind California, then, because it is all 80s here, baby! Neon and tight tight pants and yech . . .
There are styles i like more than others, but mostly I just like fashion in all its guises. To observe, anyway. The exception would be pointy-toed shoes--especially with high heels--that turn normal women's feet into hooves.
We must truly be behind California, then, because it is all 80s here, baby! Neon and tight tight pants and yech . . .
Yeah it's kind of a mix here - part late 1960's/early 70's hippy look with fringed everything, and part late 70's/early 80's disco look with tight neon everything. Target dept stores has a bit of everything - many things from all eras of the 70's.
What I like is the in-between look of the mid-70's which was a time when the "natural" look was in. Earth shoes, sandals and flip flops, hip huggers with gypsy style blouses (and no bra of course :-)!), no make-up, undone hair (wash and wear), minimal jewlry, etc... A style that didn't last long unfortunately. Guess fashion designers and make up companies can't make any money on such a easy going minimalist style! I just know that at all the stores I see VERY 1970's clothing of all different types - from the early 70's to the late 70's - platform shoes, crop tops, peasant blouses, tight hip hugger flared jeans, floor length dresses, halter tops, etc... Less disco stuff though like the wrap dresses and leisure suits (UGH). Although I have seen a couple of one-peice pant suits - the kind with the really wide flared legs so they almost look like gowns - and those were VERY disco! Watched Soul Train the other day and totally cracked up at the clothes!
I personally hated the disco fashions but I do wear hot pink alot - mostly in tank tops and tee shirts - and have one on now with gray shorts and running shoes - high fashion out here in Surf City, USA :-)!
