I just purchased a cool pair of new (aka: never worn) vintage Alain Mikli eyeglass frames from http://www.eyeglassboy.com/mens_vintage_eyeglasses.html. I like the look of vintage frames. I also purchased a new pair of Marc by Marc Jacobs frames. I plan to use one pair as regular prescription eyeglasses with tinted polarized lenses w/ flash mirror and will have Transitions Drivewear lenses in the other pair http://drivewearlens.com/task.php. I love that my optician will do free tracings of any vintage eyeglass frame to fit new lenses and does not require me to purchase new frames from him.

Do you like and/or have you purchased vintage eyeglass frames?

Don't care for the vintage look at all. Of course, I worn many of these styles the first time around!

I have a collection of vintage eyeglasses from as far back as the early 1900's. I display them with my collection antique cameras. I told my niece that I had the same frames as she has when I was in high school and had to produce them to prove it. My husband recently used a pair of frames that belonged to my father in the fifties for his new glasses and they look mighty handsome on him.

@goldensmom: Very cool! I've often thought of keeping my old eyeglass frames, but I usually donate them to a charity via my local optician. I love that your husband is wearing eyeglasses that belonged to your father and that he looks handsome in them. :)

Thanks for posting this link. I like having options, especially when it comes to accessories. I'm strangely drawn to these:

You're welcome, JaneV2.0!

I like to be unique. I have never been one to conform to others' standards of fashion. I really enjoy vintage and alternative eyewear. As someone who has worn eyeglasses since the 5th grade, I really appreciate having options, too. Here is a great source for alternative eyewear. I have owned 3 pairs of SEE eyeglasses and can vouch for their high quality. Their website is nifty! http://seeeyewear.com/index.aspx

Very cool idea. I don't wear regular glasses, but I do wear reading glasses. How fun would it be to have a pair of vintage for reading glasses! My only questions is the durability of the plastic material used to make them. Plastics can get old and brittle just sitting around. How long do you think these would wear?

Based upon my own experience, vintage eyewear has been as durable, if not more so, than new eyewear. I have owned several pairs of vintage eyeglasses. One pair was made of Bakelite, another pair was made from a combination of Bakelite and metal and a third pair was made exclusively of metal. My optician gives the same warranty for vintage and modern frames, as the vintage frames he sells have never been worn.
