I got some of these last week, they seem pretty handy so far. DMT credit-card-sized diamond sharpening "cards". It is their regular quite effective diamond surface, continuous instead of the normal honeycomb pattern, on top of a robust metal backing. You get course, fine, extra fine in a set of 3 for ~$25. They are not super-light weight.

Sharpen or touch up small knives, chisels, or various other sharp/edged things. The beauty of these is they fit handily in a pocket or wallet, and so are easy to always have with you. Also I suspect they will be terribly convenient during various Trips To Relatives During Holidays, as my relatives tend to have terribly dull knives, and I think they invite me over mostly so I will sharpen things for them :-)

For serious sharpening, I usually use a machine, and a machinist's granite surface plate in combination with sandpaper, but this isn't a very portable solution:
