My DH was just diagnosed with bursitis in his hip. His doctor gave him some mild pain pills and a short course of cortisone, which he started today. DH wants to get a referral to a physical therapist and learn some stretching exercises. His only exercise has been bicycle riding daily--which might have caused the bursitis with repetitive stress over-use.

Does anyone have any tips, useful info on this condition that worked for you? Especially anything wholistic such as hot baths, herbs, supplements or other? His taking cortisone troubles me...

I've been Googling, but there's so much out there--some of it conflicting.

Hi HappyHiker
I had this problem a few years back and was given a shot of cortisone right into the hip and it was amazing how much it helped.
Also, had something called dry needling in the 12-15 muslce knots from hip to knee in the left leg, those helped a lot.
Dry needling is a type of freezing in the muscle knot that allows it to relax so the knot loosens.
But, was told if the problem was coming from the back it would return and doing the stretching exercises would be needed to
stop it from coming back. It has never returned completely but, is always there a bit.
Now I am dealing with a similiar problem from the knee to foot (same leg/left) and again they think it is the back and a pinched nerve. Having a MRI in May
to see if any other nerves are being pinched.
I was told that cold was good on the bursitis because it is an imflamation but heat is good on the tight muscles to loosen...
Very confusing problem and believe him it is very painful.

Hi happy hiker, just pulled out one of my holistic reference books "Prescription forNutritional Healing". By Phyllis A. Balch. There is a section on bursitis in there where they recommend vitamins, diet and herbs and go over some other considerations. It's all too long for me to type out, but I think the remedies in here you would find very helpful. This book is available at a lot of health food stores...good luck to your DH...

Thanks for your replies...DH just got an appt. with a physical therapy group two weeks from now...that's good as we're big believers in exercise and diet as cures for what ails you...pills alleviate symptoms, but we want to prevent a re-occurrence as it's so very painful...let's find out how to keep it from coming back.

I have bursitis and get shots twice a year, which clears up the pain immediately. My doctpr suggested I get some physical therapy; I asked what this entailed. He said mostly stretching exercises like the pendulum swing. I started this exercise in the deep end of the pool. Within 2 weeks, the range of motion in my legs was improved by 100 percent; I feel so much better. I aslo started taking Celebrix, which I said I'd never take because of possible side effects. Well, I gave in and within 10 days of starting the drug I'm pain free with no side effects. For me it was a choice of being miserable 24 hours a day or getting on with my regular life. Everything is going very well right now; of course, if things change, I'll reevaluate.

Well, as for natural treatment for the pain you have a few good options. Herbal remedies - There are scientifically proven herbs that are as effective as pain killers, you can find how to use them here: http://www.natural-alternative-therapies.com/natural-pain-relief/

Another good option for natural pain relief is red light therapy (infrared to be exact), it helps with the pain but also helpes heal tha area (that applies for the herbs as well, they help treat the inflammtion as well), you can read more about light therapy for pain here: http://www.light-therapy-reviews.net/light-therapy-for-pain/

Hope this helps!:)
