View Full Version : Things that come to mind in the middle of the night

While laying awake unable to fall back asleep last night, something came to mind from my childhood and I am turning to you who may have been a child in the 1950's/1960's to see if you remember too and if you know the name of this toy. As I recalled during the wee hours, there were little plastic (rubbery feeling) cutouts like a pink flower in a pot, etc. that would stick on a board to create a scene and you could just peel them off and move them around. Sound familiar? I cannot remember what these were called, only the cutouts themselves are fairly clear to me. I don't even remember what the board looked like. Hoping someone can help. I have tried googling, but with no more to go on than what I have now I have been unsuccessful. :help:

I remember those. The background was usually black. I thought they were still around about 10 years ago. The name escapes me right now but I'll look.

I remember them, I'd decorate my window with them instead of the board that came with them. Vinyl clings type of thing. I remember thinking they should smell or take like lifesavers because the first ones I got were transparent bright colors like lifesavers. Then I got poofy ones. Can't really much about the shapes I had - just the texture and wishing they tased good! lol

Thank you JaneV2.0 - that must be it! Colorforms! I had no idea they were still around, but probably much more advanced now than the ones we had back then. Vinyl. Yes, that is what they were made of. Mine were the flat kind, not poofy ones that Float On mentioned. You guys always come through for me when I have something like this!

Yup, colorforms....loved 'em. It is kind of cool that your middle of the night thinking is about colorforms!

Younger people are not familiar with Colorforms - they must have gone the way of the dinosaur. My sister and I were on vacation several years ago with a friend's young daughter (about 10 yo at the time). We somehow got talking about Colorforms, and Alyssa didn't know what we were talking about. We walked by a toy store and decided to pop in, and said to the clerk, "Do you have Colorforms? Alyssa has no idea what they are, if you can believe it!" And the clerk (about 18 yo) asked "What are Colorforms?" On the other hand, I'm not sure they're missing much - kind of a boring toy, IMHO.

I totally remember the Colorforms once I click through the link. They were still around in the early 70s.

Here is a question along the same lines....

When I was small I loved looking at a children's book of my dad's who was born in the early 40s.
It was a cute little house and there was a large mouse looking in the windows.
It was velvety soft to the touch, the pictures - and the colors were different hues of deep blue.
I haven't done anything more than Google around to try to find it, but I can't come across it that way.
Does this ring a bell to anyone?

I could spend a whole afternoon with that book making up scenarios in my head- I'd love to find it for my kids while they are still small.

I had a Colorforms Mary Poppins, with clothes and accessories that stuck on her, and a Colorforms grocery store and shopping cart, you could take the items off the shelf and stick them to the cart.

We called them Clingforms but yeah, I remember them. I remember getting them for my kids, but haven't seen them since. Seems to me I saw a tutorial on the web once on how to make them yourself. Pretty easy I think.

You can still get Colorforms. If you go to Toys R Us website they have a bunch of sets.

Hey Kathy, Sounds like they were already teaching us to be good little consumers with Colorforms, no less!

Colorforms are the commercial version of felt boards, i think. Teachers used to use those to illustrate basic language and math exercises. (Apparently, some still do: http://www.artfulparent.com/2010/04/alphabet-fun-for-the-felt-board.html )

My Colorforms was a kitchen, I think. I remember the oven door opened and you could stick a turkey inside it.

My favorite thing to do was to peel off all the stickers, then put them back EXACTLY in the lines. Kinda like a puzzle to me.
