If you heard the first segment of This American Life on NPR today, it was about our local politician Jeff Smith who went to prison for carrying out, and then lying about, a minor campaign funding thing. Jeff was a gifted communicator, and he lived and campaigned right across the highway that divided our districts. I was happy that he was in another Congressional district because he was so cute and charming that, had he been in mine, I would have been conflicted about voting for him. He's a Democrat. His campaign where he did the illegal thing was a primary against another Democratic, a lame-o guy who eventually went to Congress only because his family is big into statewide politics.

I'm always amazed that you get a longer sentence if you cheat at politics than you do if you kill someone. At least that's how it seems to me. Rod Blagojevich and all...

Heard the story, love the show. Kept thinking about Jeff (Jefferson) Smith that was Jimmy Stuart's character in "Mr. Smith Goes to Washington".
