View Full Version : Summer shorts. Has your short-wearing season started yet?

Here, in our neck-of-the-woods, I thought the summer-short season, was underway (as of last week), but the rain and cold weather moved back in again, pushing short-wearing season back another week or two... That is for scaredy-cats like myself.

I wear shorts until the snow gets too deep in the winter and bring them back out when it melts to below boot top level in the spring. One of the joys of self-employment. This "winter" I never put them away.

Holy smokes, Gregg! :) I'm always mortified when I see school-kids trudging around in shorts (early winter). I always think to myself, "where are your parents, and what are they thinking".

Yes, we are way into short season here. Tuesday I went for a run after work (5 pm!) and it was still 90 degrees out, whew!

We keep shorts out year round as well - even in our coldest winters it seems to hit 50degrees every three days.
I don't wear them to town though - that's what cropped pants and skirts are for.

Well, depends on if you mean shorts season for ME or for DH. I wait until June or July to wear shorts. Actually, I don't wear shorts anymore. I don't think they're very flattering on me, so I wear casual skirts (like denims and khakis).

OTOH, DH wears shorts almost year round in the NE--we always joke that it's because shorts are closer to kilts than trousers are, and he does love his kilt.

Same here, Gregg.

Heck, I wore my safari shorts into the secret room on the secret 3rd floor of the Beretta Gallery on Madison Ave. in Manhattan yesterday to look at $120k custom-fitted rifles and shotguns, and they didn't blink an eye.

I switched over to a nice kilt for Götterdämmerung later in the evening though.

All you guys who get to enjoy wearing shorts all year/nearly all year round, I'm envious. I like shorts, and although it takes me a few weeks to get used to wearing them again (after our Canadian winters), I enjoy the carefree and relaxed feeling of wearing something simple and easy.

Too cold as of yet for me. I mean come on even temps in the 70s are TOO DARN COLD for shorts wearing!!! Let it hit the 80s and 90s, THEN that is shorts weather.

Rarely shorts here except maybe in the yard. Its skirts or skorts in the summer for errands, and (long) hiking pants when out in the woods due to ticks and mosquitos.

Living near a university town I see college kids wearing shorts all year 'round. I wore shorts last month in the 80 degree weather, put them away for a month now they are out again. Upside of shorts/ tee shirt weather is the ease of dressing i.e., denim shorts and any top and less bulky laundry. Downside of wearing shorts is that I have to shave my legs more often.

I've only just broken out the short-sleeved shirts, and it's not always warm enough for them, yet!
I rarely wear shorts. My summer uniform is capris, fitted tee, and sandals.

Wore shorts in the warm days of March and then yesterday again. Birkenstock sandals as soon as I can.

I've been wearing shorts for weeks.

I just bought a pair I love at Goodwill for $2.

I cut grass in jeans, boots and tee this afternoon with 85 degree temps and 90% humidity. You can bet the shorts are coming out tomorrow!

And a skirt for hanging laundry after I got home.

I don't wear shorts. There are certain things that no one should have to see, and me in shorts is most of them.

I don't like wearing shorts so I put it off as long as possible.

I might add, I have found great shorts at Target. They are pajama bottoms in the Gilligan & O'Malley line! They're more comfy that "real" shorts.

I wear LLBean hiking shorts which come almost to my knees. There was a time when my shorts were shorter...long time ago...

Awww... I like to think nothing is ever that bad, Domestic Goddess. (Hugs). P.S. My mom despises wearing shorts. And I do mean despises! She thinks she's the ugliest person in the whole wide world when she wears shorts, but she wears them anyway. :)

Ladyinblack1964. I totally agree, comfort is everything.

Florence. I much prefer longer fitting shorts, too. Keeps my bare legs off things.

Usually wait until it is really warm here in NJ I haven't felt the need for it yet. I tend to be cold so until it is really warm I won't be "shorting it."

I was just reflecting on my seasonal "short pattern", Tussie. I sort of have to work myself up to get shorts on, but once I've been wearing them for a while, I dread going back to pants (fall).

Here in SoCal I wear shorts year round for the most part - even in cold weather as it's never really cold here. I use to even wear them in winter when I lived in Alaska to go to the gym (at Elmendorf AFB - former "home" to Alan). I would wear my sorel snow boots and a big full lenght wool coat over my bare legs. I actually miss living somewhere that I can wear pants part of the year (especially jeans and boots and big sweaters).

Spartana. I have missed you so much! It's so good to see you back again! Yay! :)

Thanks Mrs. M!! One of these days I'll buy a tabley computer so I can take it with me on trips and yap here ALL the time :-)!

The weather seems to have taken a permanent turn for warm temps here so have been in my shorts, capris, and sandals this week. :) These days I only wear the shorts at home and the capris to town. ;)

One of the things I do miss about my old job is the dress code -- ie. there wasn't one. I managed the office, so I pretty much set the tone, and that meant shorts and tshirts from about April-October. My new office is less formal than the head office in NYC (where even business casual is somewhat frowned upon), so as long as there isn't anyone important coming to the office I can wear jeans in the winter and denim capris in the summer, but I haven't dared to try wearing shorts -- my boss is a mensch but he's old fashioned enough that I think it would not go over well.

Shorts are out for evenings/weekends at home, though. And we're turning on the AC pretty regularly -- it's about 90 F and very humid here today. I do keep the AC set at around 80 F as the low temp, about 5 degrees higher than the first summer we moved into this apartment.

I like your way of thinking, Spartana!

Great to hear your weather has turned (for the better), Wildflower. Seasonally, we're still behind.

Lhamo. My husband could talk your ear off Re: the informal/casual thing. He tires of always having to be dressed up, and actually longs for days when he can leave the house dressed in a pair of jeans or cotton casuals, and a relaxed shirt.

I hate shorts. They don't look good on me (or I don't look good in them??) I prefer summer dresses or skirts. I hate the way my thighs explode when I sit down with shorts-ugh...Plus they're always riding up my butt and make me look like a box.

Down with shorts!

Mrs-M
5-23-12, 12:08pm
LMAO, Mighty Frugal! Re: shorts and my mom, she hates the way her legs look, too! I tell her, "quit being silly", but she doesn't buy it.

I've worn shorts a couple of times this year, though we're having a cool spell now. I don't really feel comfortable wearing shorts in public anymore - stupid varicose veins. But swirly skirts feel lovely on my legs.

Mrs-M

I second the comfort (and style) of swirly-skirts, too, Gardenarian! So carefree.

Ha ha! So true. Sitting in shorts and standing in shorts is a WORLD of difference. I posted a pic of me sitting in shorts on one of my notorcycles somehere around here and they rode up so high, look so tight, and my thighs got so squished out that my legs look like a couple of stuffed sauages - even though, in the same outfit where I'm standing, my legs look nice and the shorts look long and even baggy. So maybe skirts are the way to go!

I think cargo shorts are the best way to go! They are not really "in style" anymore, so there are plenty to be found in the thrift stores. Plus, they have lots of pockets for stuff, as I HATE carrying anything that resembles a purse.

A side note: at my new job I will be covered up by an apron or smock-thing and no one will see what I have on underneath. No more wasting time thinking about what to wear to work. Now THAT is freedom!

You need not worry, Spartana, your legs look just fine. :) A wonderful picture of you!

SiouzQ. I envy those who love their Cargo Shorts (and can pull-off wearing them). I tried a pair on, once, however, being pear-shaped, they seemed to only add to my size, so they were a no-go... But what a super-way to travel!

Thanks but as a "kind-a thin person who wears big baggy shorts" I'm like Mighty Frugal and don't like my shorts riding up and getting tight - or looking at my thighs all squished out like that when pressed against the gas tank of the bike - UGH! But i like the pic just because it shows all the mega-junk I carried on my bike when i travelled. Too Much! I'd never bring all that much stuff on a road trip nowadays.

I also love cargo shorts and wear them all the time. really like all the pockets. I also have several pairs of those cargo pants that zip off just above the knees to make them shorts (by Columbia). Those are great for travel or just running around in when it's one of those hot/cold day like we get here in SoCalif. They aren't exactly figure flattering but very, very practical!

That's my problem with Cargo shorts, too, Spartana, the whole figure-flattering thing, or should I say, the lack there-of.

Freeon05. Must be making it's rounds, because we're getting the same.

.

I always wear my cargo shorts with a feminine figure flattering top (I'm a fan of fitted hot pink tank tops) so that helps. But I don't always like figure flattering things anyways and prefer big baggy stuff as it's more comfortable. but at least I look more like a 12 year old boy then a crazy bag lady. Although I do like to channel my inner bag lady sometimes ;-)!

Tussie. It's still hit-and-miss with us (for the most part). It's May, yet there are still days where we need to turn the heat on in the house (first thing in the morning). Imagine...

I think my shorts-wearing season ended in September of 2002. Skirts are much more forgiving!

5-30-12, 3:40pm
Maribeth, I think long pants are even more forgiving! Havent worn shorts since dd was a baby, and she is now 31, so I can't see myself making a change anytime soo, unless I completely lose my mind.It is cool enough here today that my long pants won't cause any comment, though dd still bugs me about the short thing from time to time. Not gonna happen. What I would like for around the house wear, I think, would be a long, loose dress of some type, but I'm not so anxious for it that I'm ready to spend the money.

Domestic Goddess. Is part of the stumbling block Re: shorts (and you), relate to having the same figure as I do (pear-shaped), and feeling as though you don't want to accentuate your bottom half anymore than it already is? Or are you like my mom, who is convinced her legs are the whitest legs in the whole wide world?

I wear long pants probably 11.5 months out of the year. But if it's really hot enough that a skinny, young, tan person would wear shorts, I will wear a knee length skirt or dress instead.

I also have a few cotton maxi dresses which are really comfortable. But I wore them when I was pregnant, so now I am slightly paranoid that they make me look pregnant. It's probably all in my head.

Comfort (and confidence) is important, Maribeth. :)
