View Full Version : June Exercise Support

I am looking around for a 5K for this weekend. I did one in April and skipped the one I'd registered to do in May. There is a fun little paddle/pedal/run event in my hometown but mentally I wouldn't be ready for that, even though it's far from a full tri.

Did a 10 minute ab video on SparkPeople tonight. Felt very good, and not as hard as I remembered them being a few years ago.

I think doc was right, reducing my dairy is helping me to slim down. I don't weigh myself but I feel slimmer, especially through the middle.

I'm having a hard time getting out of bed to do runs in the morning. Not sure why this is but I suspect it's something with my thyroid meds because it started very markedly after I went to the doc the last time. At any rate, I have been letting it put me off my workouts. And I don't want to be off them! I like them! So hoping the group can maybe offer a few words of support on this point.

The heat also becomes an obstacle for me sometimes, so a little worried about that in June.

Let's get 'em, all!!!

Kelli, our school is having a 5k on Saturday. I'll email the link to you. We won't be there as we have several other things scheduled... but it's a fundraiser.
Good news about the dairy! I've gone off dairy several times and have always lost weight. But in my experience, the around-the-middle slimming is due to sugar more than anything else. No dairy, no wheat = a lot less sugar, intentionally or not!

Thanks, Rosemary! That would be great about the 5K.

You know, for the first time this week I was thinking, hey, maybe I COULD do the sugar cut-out, too . . . before, it was always an impossibility in my mind. But if I've done dairy and wheat, well, why not sugar, too?

A 45 minute walk-run this morning, which felt good and which I believe I only got my butt out of the house to do because of this thread :) Hugsies all!!!

Well done Kelli! I'm an avid runner, but since I moved in with my partner I haven't been running as much as I used to... largely because I used to run in the evenings, and if I put on my trainers and headed out the door again as soon as I got home, we wouldn't get to spend much time together... anyway, my little goal for June is to start running in the mornings more, which means getting up at 6am instead of 7.30am... those 90 minutes seem like 9 hours when the alarm clock starts screaming, but I know once I make it a habit it will become easier... wish me luck!

I do wish you luck, lucas. I feel it's hard in the morning sometimes, but I feel so good about myself, like I accomplished something important before I even go to work. Let us know how it goes . . .

Thanks Fidgie girl for starting this. I am not a runner at all, but my goal is to walk up the lane at least 4 or 5 times a week this month. It is a steep hill for me, I get very out of breath, but assume I will get better at if if I would just do it. It only takes 10 minutesup and back so it isn't as if I don't have the time. I think stating here that I will do it just might be the oomph that I need! One day a 5 K!!!!

Hi all! Welcome to June! :)

nswef, awesome goal. SparkPeople talks about starting a streak of 10 minutes a day. Pretty hard not to find 10 minutes, although believe you me, there have been plenty of days where I've not found it! That's what I'm focusing on, having a streak going. 3 days so far! A run this morning and an arm workout just now from SparkPeople's YouTube channel.

Who else is in with us?

5 day streak! Woo hoo!

Way to stay on top of things, Kelli!

I've been doing ok in terms of my exercise goals. Finished the 10k training program I started a couple of months ago and now am into week 3 of a 5k speed improving program. I have discovered I really dislike long runs and really like sprint intervals -- that comes as something of a shock, because when I was a kid I hated sprinting and loved running long distances. Go figure. I also prefer shorter, faster runs over longer, slower ones. It has been interesting to experiment. My speed/stamina doesn't seem to be improving dramatically, and my weight isn't dropping either, but at least I'm staying on target in terms of weekly/monthly exercise goals. Not bad considering things have continued to be crazy at both work and home the past couple of months.

I like the idea of a streak- I also put stars on my calendar for walking or any real exercise.

I did another 10k yesterday and shaved 12 minutes off my time compared to the last time, which was about 3 weeks ago! I guess I am improving, though it is hard to see on a day to day basis.

Wow, lhamo, that's awesome! 12 minutes?! Great!

nswef, I like the streak thing, too. It was the one psychological thing that finally got me to give up gluten for good. Now that I've been off for just over six months, I'd hate to mess up my streak. And I feel good!

8 days now! It was tough today in the heat. I almost gave it up, but I went on my bike up to Whole Foods. That's what I like about the 10 minute streak. There really is nearly never a good excuse not to squeeze in 10 minutes. Even in ridiculous heat one can do 10 minutes of stretching, or something. And since 10 usually leads to more, well, great!

Day 9 of the 10 minutes a day streak. Belly felt crappy tonight, so did an arms video.

Aiming for a morning run tomorrow.

Keep strong, workouters!!

Still doing my Couch to 5K and up to 2 1/2 miles now. Still on the treadmill too, since any bit of humidity makes me physically ill (dizzy, stomach cramps). When I get up to 3 miles, I'll try at least 2 miles outside and see how I do.

I'm pretty amazed at how quickly my heartrate and breathing comes back down to normal after jogging. Within 2-3 minutes, it's as if I didn't do anything. Maybe the program really did get me into shape.

That is pretty amazing, pony mom. sometimes I will be out for one of my runs and remembering when I too started C25K and couldn't even barely do the first week. Now I do a distance without even feeling winded. And I don't run THAT often!

Have you thought of entering a 5K yet?

Congratulations, keep it up!!

After a week of too inactive vacation I plan to start again..do a 10 minute walk to get the streak re started.

Thanks! I've always wanted to run but didn't know how to start; that program really made it doable. Last night I did my first 3 miles, outside (up til now I've been on the treadmill). I just ran and ran and put off looking at my watch, then made it to 30 minutes, 3 miles IF I maintained 6mph. No interest in entering any races, as I'm pretty competitive and would probably overdo it and hurt myself.

I'm beginning to see why people such as yourself enjoy running so much.

I need to get that book. Couch to 5 K...I did another day of my streak- added a bit to the walk and it was in the 80s with swampy humidity. So, if I can do that...It's nice to read how other people are progressing, Day 2 streak!

nswef
6-20-12, 8:37pm
I see that it is a web site Couch to 5 K- read it, for now I think I will just work on the walk up the lane streak. I did the same walk as yesterday and the heat is worse, so I felt quite pleased with myself. Day 3.

6-20-12, 9:26pm
Great job all!

If it hasn't been the heat, it's been the rain that's kept me from a truly, really good workout. But my 10 minute a day streak continues with strength videos. I think today is day 16.

Hopefully in the morning I can grab a run. Tonight's doggy walk will be in the rain :(

nswef
6-21-12, 1:14pm
So you are doing a streak of at least 10 minutes a day of something? I may be able to do that, even if I don't do the lane walking every day! But, I think it should be extra things, not what I was already doing. Enjoy the rain.

fidgiegirl
6-21-12, 8:18pm
Huh, wonder what happened to my earlier reply? I suppose I got up and left it, most likely :)

Yes the idea is a streak of 10 minutes a day. It's nearly impossible to make excuses for that little time, but frequently, it turns into something longer. I also do not count what I'm already doing, which in my case is dog walking. So these are runs, rides, or Spark People videos so far. I am noticing a difference in tone, but no difference in weight. That's ok with me.

OH geez, I forgot to post the whole reason I came on the boards to post! I went biking for about 2 hours and did 14 miles. That felt really good. Now I can putter around the house and know I've done what I need to do for my body today. Great.

nswef
6-22-12, 12:43pm
7 miles an hour and 2 hours. I am very impressed!!!

fidgiegirl
6-22-12, 1:41pm
Well there were some breaks in there. The total of the biking was probably approximately 2 hours but I was out of the house for about 3.

nswef
6-22-12, 9:21pm
fidgiegirl, I am still amazed!!! You could strut around a bit now! I did my evening walk up the lane- day 5! I'm doing a lot of it barefooted in grass. It's a freeing feeling. I don't think I've been barefoot outside for YEARS.

fidgiegirl
6-22-12, 9:53pm
Barefoot is such a wonderful feeling, nswef!!

Biked to the store, but probably should have had a rest day from the bike. Tomorrow I'll do something different - shoveling rock out of my yard. ;)

I managed to do 5k in 30 minutes again yesterday -- this time without any walking breaks (the last time I did it I walked a bit twice during the 30 minutes). Got a late start this morning so haven't been to the gym yet, but we did walk back from lunch, which took about 40 minutes. Tomorrow I will do another 10k in the morning. Have a long transpacific flight starting in the afternoon so I'll have plenty of time to rest and recover...

Next week will be a bit challenging on the fitness front as I am on a business trip with a hectic schedule, but trying to think of ways to make it fun. I'll be in NYC Monday, so will probably try to take an early morning run in Central Park. And the rest of the week I'll be in DC so I'll probably run around the mall in the early mornings there -- there's a route mapped out by my hotel that is about 4 miles total, which I think I can handle. there, now I've said it -- hope making it public will make it easier for me to stay on top of it!

Stay on top! Stay on top!

Seriously though now I'm gonna hand you an excuse on a silver platter, DC is a sauna at this time of year, just be careful with the heat and be gentle with yourself if you have to walk while outside on the mall. Not sure about NYC but I imagine it's about the same with all the urban heat! Have fun on your travels! I love Washington so much. I suppose you'll be working the whole time . . . but try to have some fun anyway :)

nswef
6-23-12, 12:29pm
ihamo, I would second fidgiegirl's admonishment about taking it easy in the DC area. We're about 65 miles west of DC and 10 degrees or more coole, but the same humidity. Today is glorious, but be aware as you can end up very over heated. You are undertaking an impressive plan! Good luck, but do have some fun in DC. Get on the hop on, hop off bus to tour if you've never done it. dooing a 5k running the whole time is something I think I won't ever do, but I so admire the doing! Just don't beat yourself up if 4 miles in heat and humidity is too daunting. N.

6-23-12, 7:40pm
Thanks for the warning. It has been really humid here in Beijing, too, so I'm kind of used to it. early morning tems in DC are supposed to be ok the first part of the week, but I'll keep an eye on it as the heat rises later in the week.

I went for a run yesterday morning and did NOT do well with the heat! I had visions of ending up on the path. So most of my run was really a walk. Oh well, I tried! This thread was looming large in my mind as I walked along, chiding myself from one part of my brain for not pushing, and congratulating myself from the other side of my brain for not pushing! Very weird run.

Then my friend and I went tubing for 3 hours. Wow, it was more of a workout than other tubes I've done because the river was high and moving fast. Not dangerous fast, fun fast. But that meant we had to do more positioning on the river to not get bonked into the banks at every curve, and do avoid being hung up on sand bars or scraping our bottoms on rocks. My pecs hurt from paddling with my arms while on my back. Good thing! I never work my pecs!! :) Lots of drinking (get your mind out of the gutter! water and ice tea!) is in order today. I think I'm dehydrated from all the fun.

Whenever possible I go with congratulating myself for even getting out when it is hot...so for you to continue walking even though not running is an accomplishment. How neat that the tubing was fun and strenuous!
Checking in- I skipped walking on Sunday, but am back on track. We'll see about today as I have a busy schedule, it stays light until nearly 9 though so I'll have time when I get home! This thread is helping me keep accountable to myself.
