View Full Version : Superstitions. (Anyone live by them/believe in them)?

You know what I'm talking about, like when you gift a wallet or purse to someone, you should always put something inside. i.e. A penny, etc. That sort of thing.

My grandmother always used to say "don't tell your dream before breakfast or it will come true". I guess this was assuming it was a bad dream. Anyway, although I don't believe this with one shred of my being, I still make it a practice to keep my dreams to myself until after I've had breakfast. Of course, this could have something to do with not being a morning person and barely able to utter words for awhile!

I'm generally not superstitious, and I can't think of one right now that I follow, whether I believe in it or not. I'm sure there must be one, but it doesn't come to mind now. I'll have to give this some thought.

Nope. DH and I are both scientists.

Nope. Never believed in that stuff.

My grandma knew all of them. Course to her the world was flat and man had never been on the moon either.

The one I remember the most is when you and someone else accidently bump into each other's back ends (like two women trying to cook in the same kitchen) that that's a good sign that you meet in the same place next year.

Nope. DH and I are both scientists.
Everything is connected to everything in ways unknown to us. We can only witness the results of these subterranean currents and deduce the existence of such currents from the observable result.

The planets influence our lives, dry coffee sediments contain information about the future, black cats portend disasters, certain dates are unlucky, certain numbers are to be avoided. The world is unsafe because it can never be fathomed. But the fact that we, limited as we are, cannot learn about a hidden connection, should not imply that it doesn't exist.

"The most beautiful experience we can have is the mysterious. It is the fundamental emotion that stands at the cradle of true art and true science." ~ Albert Einstein, The World as I See It, 1931

With that said, no, I don't believe in superstitions either.

Agreed, Alan. I don't believe that scientists know everything. However, having an understanding of science does preclude one from believing most superstitions.

Not superstitious!

I don't really believe, either, b-u-t... there is a side of me that still gets creeped-out when I think about it.

Not the least bit superstitious. I'm completely convinced that nothing so silly could ever have any impact on my real life. Knock on wood.

I behave according to this odd superstition that says if I treat others the way I'd like to be treated, perhaps they will return the favor.

I'm with Einstein; in fact, a fervent love of the mysterious is a guiding principle in my life.

"I have no doubt that in reality the future will be vastly more surprising than anything I can imagine. Now my own suspicion is that the Universe is not only queerer than we suppose, but queerer than we can suppose." JBS Haldane, geneticist and evolutionary biologist

IMO, the best scientists have a mystical streak. They're not afraid to leap to conclusions (historically fostered by everything from dreams to drugs) then apply the scientific method to bear them out. All the best advances spring fully-formed from the Head of Zeus, figuratively speaking.

That said, I think superstitions are just for fun.

Lots of fun hearing from everybody! Thanks a bunch for stopping-by to post. :)

I love the variety of superstitions out there. Our Italian neighbours have a few I never heard of before, one of them being, "no cleaning the house on Sunday".

P.S. Gregg, "knocking on wood" seems to bring me bad luck... :)

I am a slave to my superstitions. I REALLY wish I didn't believe but there are a few that I am compelled to follow

1. I always get up on the same side of the bed as I got in. This is a huge PITA when we are on holidays at a hotel-if I sit on a bed must I then slide off the same side? Argh, I have modified this one to only be about sleep..but I never get out the 'wrong side'

2. I ALWAYS put on my right shoe first. Even if I am in a shoe store trying on shoes, if they only hand me the left on, I will ask for the right one

3. I used to have a big thing with the number 13 but since my son was born on the 13th I have deemed it my lucky number and now can stop reading a book on page 13 (or page 213, 413, etc)

4. I never start anything new (a hobby/task) on a Friday

5. Never open an umbrella indoors-actually I sometimes do in a store if I am looking to purchase it, but I don't put my head under it

I hate having these superstitions and wish I could stop. Sometimes I get the nerve to say 'screw this! I am putting my left shoe on first. Really, what difference could it possibly make?" but I always chicken out.

And I understand this is irrational and how could what shoe I put on or what side I get out of bed, or if I stick my head under an umbrella actually change the course of my life, but I am too scared to prove my sensibility correct:|(

I hear other superstitions but I refuse to adopt anymore. I consider them 'their issues' just as I consider others religion-fine for them but I refuse to adopt it. Like my niece won't step over someone, and my ex-boyfriend wouldn't pass anyone on stairs...fine for them but I will do these things

Sadly, my dh now does the right shoe thing because of me-eek. But I refuse to allow my sons to be sucked into this and let them put on any darn shoe they want to;)

I do realize I am a bit nutty

Oh, I love your list, Mighty Frugal! Lots of fun!

OK... I realize I mentioned, "I'm not really a superstitious person", but like yourself, I also (still) practice certain things related to superstitions. One of my biggest superstitions... no whistling in the house. That's a big-no-no in our home. (Supposed to bring bad luck).

I broke an old dressing-mirror when I was a kid, and that silly breaking of the mirror haunted me for seven whole years after! I kid you not. I used to check-off the year come New Years Eve. Silly, huh...

I'm not, but I will "knock on wood" so I don't jinx myself, just in case.

LOL! Lots of different takes on the matter, that's for sure... This thread is a lot of fun.

He He! Me too - no superstitions at all. Wish I could say the same for my crazy sister who MUST have the toilet paper roll facing a certain way or believes the world will end!

Not superstitious at all. I walk under ladders and lived with a black cat for 18 years....

Wildflower--way 2 live on the edge!
Gregg--knock on wood--+1
Mrs M--If there were no whistling in my house (and everywhere I go 4 that matter) there would be no music in my house & that would be a drag!

LOL, Wildflower! The more I read this thread, the more convinced I am that I really do have a superstitious side to me...

Bunnys. It's OK... you can call me a party-pooper! :)

My mom always taught me that when you give someone something sharp for a gift (e.g., knives for a wedding present), you're supposed to put a penny in with it so the gift doesn't cut yoru friendship.

I like it when my right palm itches, supposed to bring money. I just ignore when my left one itches (bills/debt).;)

I haven't been able to think of any superstition that I believe in or practice. I do walk under ladders, unless someone is standing on them, painting, but that is because I don't want to be dripped on. Have had black cats and liked them. Stepped on cracks, never broke my mother's back. Stepped on lines and never found a dime. But I do beilieve that prayers are answered (not always in the way we want or expect them to be), and that God is never far from us, though we sometimes stray from him.

Those are great ones, Beckyliz!

Domestic Goddess. No under-ladder walking for me. I attribute that to either superstitions, or traditional childhood teachings. Don't know which one to choose now... :)
