My garage has 3 300-watt incandescent bulbs, in the classic bare-bulb-on-the-ceiling fixture. The bulbs are very heavy in construction, and typically lasted years. They have all burned out in the past year, and I went to replace them. My stash of GE 200w and 150W "household" bulbs don't seem to last more than a couple of weeks before perishing. I replaced two this week that I'd replaced last week, so a total lifetime of < 20 hours or so... And this is in moderately reasonable summer weather.
I also have 5 fixtures that take 75w->150w regular incandescent bulbs. The clamp-on-to-beam moveable work light fixture that you see in shops and garages for task lighting. When I set those up this last week, I've found the GE household bulbs have sometimes lasted less than a couple hours of use. I am perhaps spending more time changing light bulbs than getting any work done.
Our local stores only carry the low-end GE Soft-White brand that seems to have near-zero lifespan now.
What to do?
Does anyone make easily available industrial-quality light bulbs for shop/garage use anymore?
All help appreciated.
