View Full Version : Good Bye most of the garden.....
Attacked by a viscious rabbit gang who ate everything they could down to the nibs. Strange the only thing they left alone was the carrots! I thought that carrots were a rabbit's favorite. They must of done that on purpose so I'd blame some other animal gang.
Oh well....it was pretty much done for with the heat and all anyway. I'm going to turn over some of the beds today and prepare to add more soil/manure/etc... and plant soon for a fall garden. I'm really going to give gardening through the winter a better try this year.

I find it so sad when I see all my hard work ruined, no matter what project. Sorry the rabbits feasted at your garden.
By the way is it okay to add manure to the garden? We used to add dehydrated manure every year before planting but someone brought up about the ecoli aspect?
Thanks Float On.

I've always heard that aged is fine. I'm getting a load of horse crap. But I intend to start raising some rabbits and use their poo. Our Zoo sells zooanure. Lowes has bags of manure that I bought the year I built my raised beds (I used a mix of a load of garden soil, mixed in peat, vermiculite, manure, mushroom compost-which may have been too 'hot' for raised beds).
I always wash things well. I don't eat as I gather.
I'm happy with what I got out of this years garden. And thought I was being a bit dramatic they did spare the carrots, tomato plants (which quit producing on their own), and squash which hasn't produced anything yet (late planting).
I did harvest alot so I'm good.
The deer had a feast this past spring on my newly planted roses. Aaaarrrrggghhh!!
Well, I feel bad 'cause mine is doing so well (with almost daily watering). But long ago, I realized I just couldn't have much of a garden without a big fence. So far this year, since we put up a new fence, absolutely no rabbits in there. Its just too sad to lose something you've worked hard on.
I'm so sorry Float On. Can you put up a 3' chicken wire fence around it (or higher) and maybe things just got pruned, and will grow back?

That's ironic that they left the carrots! How frustrating. My tomatoes are just starting to ripen. Something took a bite out of one of them, so I brought the ones that have a tinge ofcolor inside to see if I can ripen them on the windowsill. So far so good! I just checked them, and they are slowly turning red. I had rabbits eat my romaine lettuce in the fall, but it did grow back. I planted another patch in the front yard, and they didn't eat it. I think I need to fence my vegetables, too. I'm glad you still got a good harvest. My garden is going bananas! It's very exciting!
I think you can grow lettuce indoors when it's cool. I might try that for my winter garden.
Send for Grommitt! I sounds like a case for the Wererabbit!
It is frustrating though. All my strawberries have a bite out of them - woodlice - or as we call them teeny tiny armadillos. Ants have moved in on some the raspberries but only the golden ones not the usual red varieties. And I have an ongoing vendetta with Mrs Blackbird - she can spot a ripe red currant from a great distance!
We have two lines of electric fence around our garden, close to the ground because we were having critter problems.

Gardening is such a crap-shoot; and I'm sorry that your's didn't do well this year, Float On.
We are so far having a banner year, unlike the last two years where we lost everything to the heat and the drought and the bugs.
It's true, isn't it, that gardening isn't for the faint of heart. You've gotta PRACTICE this s**tt.....and be prepared for total losses.....
Sorry to hear your garden was razed. It's weird, we see rabbits almost daily and I have a ton of lettuce that is STILL somehow hanging on despite the 90s and 100s basically from early June through today. Maybe because it's a raised bed? Maybe because it's mulch around and all over the yard so they don't even wander over? Maybe the cat hangs out nearby enough of the day to impart his scent (or pees around there when I'm not looking!)? If I figure it out I'll let you know.
I'm just glad they waited till now. I did get a lot more out of the garden this year than last year because I planted earlier this year. I'm looking forward to fall/winter gardening.
The garden is in the front yard so I really don't want to go with a wire fence but I may have to see what I can do with my pile of pallets.......hmmmm.
