We talk a lot about how we can change or affect the world we live in, about how sometimes we can only affect the small circle around us.

I'd like you folks to consider a program called KickStarter. It's a way to support small projects all over the place.

I've suported several projects in the past. One was a Pacific Northwest musician and his newest CD. This is the one I'm watching now. BRIDEGROOM, An American Love Story http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/452010736/bridegroom-an-american-love-story

Here's another, Print on Fabric, Using Sunlight

And Here's one about planned living in New Mexico http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1677059429/grubstakers-wanted-for-plands-2012-residency-seaso?ref=popular

Funny, Cecilia, before you posted this I made my first Kickstarter contribution this afternoon.

It is to help support a film about plastic showing up in dead albatrosses on Midway island.

I'm not entirely sure I get the concept - seems like if they meet their pledge goal by a certain date, they get all the money, and if not, they don't?

madgeylou was doing a Kickstarter thing when she was starting her dress biz, right? Anyone remember?

You're correct. If they don't get pledges for the whole amount they don't get any of it.

I know several other people who have used the Kickstarter site and it didn't work for them, which I think shows that it's a very good way to get feedback on whether your project is feasible/rational or not.

It's fascinating, for me, to see the variety of ideas, dreams and projects that people have come up with and what a difference $10 or $25 can make.

I have several friends who have used Kickstarter to fund urban agriculture projects. They've all been successfully funded, but they also really worked hard to promote their projects via social media in order to get enough pledges. I think people who already have a large network have an easier time making their total amount because they just have that many more people they can ask to contribute.

Good points cdttmm. It's kind of entertaining to search through the projects by State or by Topic. The music category sort of throws me because I'm not familiar with the types listed as descriptions. I like watching the little films they do to explain things, though.

Just happened across this thread, and wow! So neat-O. The "print on fabric using sunlight" is over the top!
