View Full Version : Cats!
Well, now that I've figured out how to upload photos, here are my sweet companions of the fur-bearing kind...
835836
Cleo-sweet & shy. Bandit-a rapscallion!
Both very sweet looking. Is that also Cleo in your avatar?
I have an orange long-haired tabby named Cate (couldn't think of a name for her.)
No pics bc I am too ignorant (and lazy) to figure out how to upload pics.
I would like to get a cat for our house, but DH is allergical (that's a specialized, in-house term). Anyway, got a look at some rag dolls last week (the kind of cat, that is), and DH was not convinced. I think, mostly, he doesn't want a cat right now. :)
No better way to start the day than a vicarious cat snuggle. Handsome duo!
Aww, I love the pics of the cats. I confess, I love cats. We are fortunate to live in a rural area and have lots of land so I have been able to have a "Kitty City" like I have always wanted. There are about 8 cats on our property, all spayed/neutered, and they all live out doors roaming the fields and buildings. I love watching them play and snooze in the unlikeliest places.
Your kitties look adorable!
Redfox, I have a black and white Bandit too! If I knew how to upload photos, you would see their faces are quite similar. My Bandit is so full of himself that we often refer to him as Himself.

This is my kitty Puddin when she was a baby. The dog bowl looks like a comfy place to her. She is lucky the dog adores her.
http://www.simplelivingforum.net/attachment.php?attachmentid=930&d=1348514610
This is Sissie who is the world's most disgruntled cat. She always look quite annoyed. She is feral and has never let anyone touch her. BayouBoy says he would be cranky too if he had hair that looked like hers, lol. She belonged to my late uncle and I adopted her when he died. She may not be the most loveable or lovely creature but I still love her anyway.

Here they are in their "bunk beds." This was once a very nice chair, but now it is more of a very expensive scratching post/cat bed.
Humphrey is my man. I like brown tabbies.
Last week I met up with one of my favorite cats in the neighborhood. I hadn't seen him for a couple of years and didn't know if he was still around. He lives 3 blocks away. He's a polydactyl brown tabby, a guy with extra toes on his front and back feet. Like most brown tabbies he is Mr Personality, so when I saw him in the alley I rushed over and scooped him up, and he was fine with that.
What gorgeous kitties everyone has! I love this thread. I happen to love cats, as evidenced by the population of my very own Kitty City. Here is Kitty City at feeding time. I just sprinkle their food all over the steps because if I put it in bowls, they would fuss and be possessive. Most are rescue kitties. Everyone is spayed/neutered except for Isaac who showed up when hurricane Isaac did which is why he is named Isaac. Also pictured is Marlie, Fang, MeMorris, Sissie, Blue, Trouble Man and Puddin.

This is Fang. He belonged to my late uncle and is a feral cat. He always has his tongue sticking out like that. He doesn't like to be touched by will come and sit by my feet and eat out of my hands and meows to me.

Redfox, your cats look so healthy and sweet!
Bayou, I have never seen a cat that looks like your ferrel cat. Her coloring looks like rust and it looks like she has really long whiskers. She is so lucky to have you taking care of her! Your house cat as a kitten in the feeding bowl looks so sweet and like she is just enjoying the warmth of the sun.
We don't have cats. But I love to see others and especially kittens who are just so darn cute!
http://www.simplelivingforum.net/attachment.php?attachmentid=932&d=1348514817
This is Blue. He is staying with us while our daughter relocates. he loves to climb the trees and nap there. He is a gorgeous white kitty with pale creamy tabby markings on his face,

Rosaruga, your cats are pretty too -- and I also like your curtains!:)
Bayou, that is so sweet that you feed the ferrel cats.... Like the step idea for them:)
BayouGirl, no wonder Sissie looks so peevish. I'd be, too, if I had a coat like that! Agree with your fellow on that!

This is a game of Kitty Jenga. The kittens don't seem to realize that all of them can no longer fit on my lap at the same time. So they pile on my lap, on top of each other. Then the kitty on bottom squeezes out from under the pile and gets on top. The the next kitten now on the bottom does the same. And so on and so on while they are purring loudly in unison. This is Marlie, MeMorris and TroubleMan who were from a litter of 6 that their mom Puddin surprised me with. Everyone is fixed now so no more kittens but I was overjoyed having 6 little kitten to snuggle, play with and laugh at.
There are about 8 cats in my kitty city (it varies as feral cats come and go) but I would love to be able to take in more. We have hundreds of acres for them to roam and barns and outbuilding for them to claim and lots of trees to climb. It really could be a perfect Kitty City (with everyone spayed/neutered, of course)

Thanks for all the pic and the comments everyone.
RedFox, I love your Cleo and Bandit. Cute names! Is Cleo a white / cream tabby? She looks a bit like my stepcat "Blue". And Bandit with his lovely tuxedo coloring, I love that too!
Rosarugosa. Your kitties are beautiful also. I love their names, Humphrey and Ogden. The "bunkbeds" pic is so cute.
Tussie, I've never seen fur like Sissies either, She looks like she's been bleached or had a bad dye job as a rebellious teen. But she is an old lady and my gram says she once had beautiful fur when she was a young cat. She is now an old lady and so petite and delicate that that I think she is just made of butterfly bones and fluff.
I also love hearing how Kitties got their names. How did you everyone decide on the kitties names?
I have:
Fang, a black male cat who sticks out his tongue and has on fang, he was named by my late uncle
Sissie -motorcycle kitty, was actually called B*tchy by my late uncle because she is so unfriendly, poor thing but I changed her name.
Isaac -male grey tabby, is named so because he appeared with hurricane Isaac, a few weeks ago.
Puddin - smoky gray mamacat, Her name just fits her.
Marlie is Puddin's kitten and she has a lovely marbled swirled pattern
MeMorris - orange tabby and Puddin's kitten, and I have such a fondness for them because my best friend growing up was my orange tabby cat.
We also have "Bunny" who is a ghost cat and rarely appears and is spooked easily. I make special noises and calls when feeding the cats and then retreat so the wild ones will come out. Every once in a while, someone new shows up and they are welcome to stay if they follow the rules. No fighting and no procreating.

This is Dunbar, trying to look all sweet and innocent.

This is a better glimpse of the reality, taken just before he fell off backwards:

Dunbar is beautiful! I love that name. While he really does look like a "he" with his beefiness, his coloring kind of looks like a tabby/tortie, and that is sex linked to females. Interesting.

Dunbar is actually a "she." But the name confuses people so much that I tend to refer to her as "him" with people who don't know her. Otherwise I spend a lot of time explaining.
She's named after a late medieval Scots poet whose work I fell in love with way back in grad school, William Dunbar.

ah yes, the way she is coyly covering her private parts in photo #2 has her in on the scam. hehe. Also anything Scots I like, so this is a great name regardless of cat gender.
Love the pics of Dunbar! Such pretty fur and markings. I do so love this thread!
These are our boys, Chris and Everett. Chris was originally named Equus by the rescue group but we didn't like that. I managed to get SO to agree to Chris before he realized why I'd picked that name...

Allergical to cats would've been a deal-breaker when I met SO. Thankfully he's not, and quickly became as smitten with my then cat Harry. And SO quickly undid my teaching of Harry to not beg for food at dinnertime. After all, what better way to make friends with an animal (or most people for that matter...) then to offer food...
jp1, orange kittehs! :) I used to know someone who had an orange fellow she named "The Orangeman."
She even had a lovely stained glass piece hanging in her front window of an orange cat on a rug.
I'm allergic, but I can stand it long enough for a visit, if a household has two cats or less. Three is over my limit.
Stop! A biological clock was not standard on my model, but whatever the equivalent is when it comes to cats seems to be ticking lately. And the last thing I need is more responsibility.
Animal allergies or--much worse--a dislike of companion animals would--be an instant deal breaker for me too (with regard to life partners). Right up there with meanness, bigotry, narrow-mindedness, dishonesty, humorlessness...

Oh JP, I have such a fondness for orange tabbies because my best friend (and first cat) was an orange tabby and we were inseparable. He would even go swimming with me! When my dear Kitty Puddin ( a grey kitty) became pregnant (by a grey taby, we suspected), I prayed for an orange kitten and was blessed with two orange one. He is my dear little MeMorris who purrs the second I pick him up. He is best friends with his sister Marlie and they always snuggle together. Here he is with his little sister playing a game of "that lap belongs to me".

Sometimes I think when I'm REALLY old and my dogs are long gone - I just want one soft kitty purring in my lap while I sit in the rocking chair drinking my tea. Pure bliss. I remember my Grandma, well into her 90's, was happy with just sitting with her dear cat on her lap for hours....makes me misty just thinking about it.

yes, me too, I'll have a cat, not a dog, when I truly want to simplify my life.
Don't have my own cat anymore, but this was shared with me on Facebook. It had me laughing for days.

Thank you. Most of the time they are. Although pictures can be deceptive. When they want something, like dinner, they can be very demanding about their desires.

The dinner time demands are what keeps me feeding my 3 cats from a common feeder.
While there are a couple of reasons why I should be giving them controlled portions of specific foods for each cat, I just cant stand the idea of them sitting around yowling and walking all over me at night because they are hungry. My cat Rachel already become anxious when the feeder gets at a very low level. She will sit and stare at me earnestly. She is too polite to yowl and jump on me, but she follows me around to make eye contact. The other two cats, though, will no be so polite.

Wow, hungry kitty!
He looks so soft, though!
Jp1, now everyone is going to want that for their avatar. I know I do!
Kestra - ROFL, I love it!!
jp1 - That is priceless!!!
We use a timer feeder to give them breakfast to avoid middle of the night fussing. When we first got it we had it open at about 4am. Their pestering gradually pushed SO to adjust the time. Now it opens at around 1:30am. The lid just makes a slight 'whoosh' sound but they both jump out of bed and run downstairs to have 'breakfast' in the middle of the night. The only time we get bothered now is if it doesn't open for some reason like a dead battery.
Jp1, now everyone is going to want that for their avatar. I know I do!
What a great idea!
I love my cat but am feeling a Hairball sized lump of envy.

Here's a picture of my darling Angelo, who we had to euthanize last Sunday. I miss him! He was such a sweet, cool cat. You can ignore the dog in the picture, since this is a cat thread. ;) If you don't want to ignore him, he's my other darling brown, stripey, sweet boy, Enzo (these 2 had a lot in common!), who is, thankfully, very much still with us. I treasure this photo. --Kara

Thanks, everyone. It's always nice to be among fellow animal lovers. This was my first (thankfully!) experience with euthanasia, and it went much better than I had been anticipating. We knew without a doubt that it was the right time, which helps. And even though I am pretty skeptical of euphemisms in general, “putting your pet to sleep” is actually very apt. I held Angelo, in the nice, comfortable, low-lit room the emergency vet provided (we were on a comfy couch, in fact), while the kind doctor knelt beside us and administered the drug. And in less than a minute, dear Angelo’s suffering was over.
Not at all trying to bring down anyone’s day by discussing this. But it is a pretty common part of pet ownership. We know perfectly well when we sign up for this gig that they aren’t going to outlive us. All we and they can ask is that we give them a good life and then let them go when they are ready. So, I miss him, but I am not *more* upset because we had to euthanize, which I thought I would be.
My other cat, Ophelia is 4 years older (18) and has been waiting for us to get rid of Angelo ever since we brought him home as a tiny kitten 14 years ago. So, Ophelia, at least, is now enjoying herself immensely. I think she’s plotting the dogs’ demise now. ;)
Kara
I have been in the situation (as a child) with my own beloved kitty who had to be euthanized. They thought it would be easier on me for me to hand him off but I preferred him to me in my own arms when he took his last breath. It was peaceful and painless and I am thankful to have been there.
As an adult, my own mother in law had many dogs but could never bear to be there during the process and so I always offered to take them, cuddle them and soothe them as they took their last breaths. I feel honored to have been able to be with them as they made their transition from this world.
Nowadays, I volunteer as a first responder and in dealing with situations of DOA, I am there silently saying prayers, handling them with gentle loving hands and preserving their dignity, not allowing them to be disrespected as a spectacle, or treated as anything less than the loved one that they are to someone.

Some comic relief here. Fang is my feral orphan kitten left to me by uncle. He is quite shy, timid and in this pic TOTALLY BUSTED. He knocked the food can over and helped himself. I wasn't mad at all. I was amused and proud of him for being so brave and assertive! Actually i think he was framed!
When any of our pets do anything wrong I ALWAYS tell BayouBou that they have been framed. Like the time I was telling BB that our lovable Ladybug the Lab did not chase and kill the chicken, she framed, right as she came around the corner with a mouth full of feathers. That's my story and I'm stickin to it!

Willie here has his own facebook page and is often found one the road again, much like his namesake "Willie Nelson". He loves the warm air that the computer puts out, enjoys rides in the truck and even on the 4 wheeler. I will leave the old truck window open because he loves to snooze there. He is a true wanderer. I had many reports from far flung neighbors asking if that was my black and white cat. Well that is hard to tell! So I took a sharpie and colored a large green patch on his head an said "if you you see and black and while and GREEN kitty, then THAT is my Willie".

Kara: So sorry about Angelo. We've had to euthanize two cats, and Boris (who would have been the third) died in my arms in the car on the way to be euthanized in 2009. He really hated to go to the vet, and was apparently determined to avoid that last visit. I've always wished that the vet made house calls for this. The cats hate going to the vet so much that I wish I could spare them that final unhappiness. Well Boris took matters into his own paws . . .
Bayou Girl: Our Ogden loves to nap in between our two laptops where it is so nice and warm.

omg. How ADORABLE!
I can't believe I missed a thread about CATS! I love all the pictures - they are all so adorable. I even like the bad hair day kitties. :)
We lost 2 cats in the last 9 months, leaving the youngest cat, Lily, alone. I casually mentioned that it was time to find her a kitty friend when I took her in for her annual vet visit and two days later the receptionist called and said her neighbor had found a 3 week old kitten in her front yard. A kitten that needed to be fed formula wasn't really what I had in mind, but the receptionist craftily sent me a text message with a picture and I crumbled. So now we're back up to two kitties, Lily and Serafina.
