Tiam had some great suggestions for Day Old Bread:
In my community there are of course soup kitchens and crisis food banks available to some. But there are also many places that just put available food out for whoever needs or wants it, first come first serve. The local Salavation Army puts out bread from the stores that are past on racks. Free to anyone who wants them. Often times they have fresh garden vegetables, fruits, baby food, travel hygiene products, canned food just to those who need it. So it's possible to get at the very least, a loaf of bread nearly every day. A creative cook could take even the stalest bread and cut and toast it and serve it with onion gravy or butter. Or an Italian bread soup. or french toast.
These are also useful for day 2 or 3 of a number of homemade breads.
So I wanted to note Tiam suggestions, add a few good ones that I know of, and ask what other things people like to do.
1) Toasted with onion gravy
2) Toasted with butter
3) Italian Bread Soup
4) French toast
5) Tomato Bread Salad: Cube and toast bread. Add diced tomatos. Also good with a bit of salt and pepper.
6) Cut cinnamon raisin bread into croutons and toast. Makes a nice snack. Good with other flavors of bread as well.
7) Pizza toast: Spread one side with tomato pasta sauce. Bake or toast (flat). Sprinkle with cheese and bake a bit more. Add finely sliced basil.
8) Creamed vegetable on toast. Make a white sauce with a cooked vegetable in it such as spinach or celery. Pour over toast.
