Even though I'm keeping the garden alive in this severe drought, I think the water I use on the plants attracts animals.
My tomatoes have looked gorgeous.......about 3-4' tall and lots of beautiful foliage (and green tomatoes). But last night I went out and one of the plants was totally wilted.
I checked the ground around it and it was pushed up (under the layer of straw). So I think its moles. Even if they aren't eating the roots, they move the soil around and leave the roots just hanging, and they dry out very quickly. Anyone else have this problem in their gardens?
Usually, if I have some mole tunnels in the garden, I just put some of those daisy pinwheels into the ground and they vibrate the ground when they turn in the wind. But I really don't have room in the garden for them now. I'm thinking of sticking some sticks into the ground under the tomato plants, in hopes of just discouraging the moles from being right under the tomatoes.
There's always somethin'!
