Quick! I need some help!

A full time job has opened up in one of the libraries where I work part-time. I really want and need this job!

My boss told me I need to go through the formal application process, and that's where I'm a bit stuck.

How do I word my cover letter? So far I have told them that I don't need extensive training, I've gained more experience since the summer break began, and I can perform the job well since I'm already doing it. (I don't know if that's the proper way of putting it. "Perform the job well" sounds awkward" to me). I'm sort of in a minor bog here!

Can anyone give me some suggestions asap? Sometimes when someone else thinks something like this over, they come up with good suggestions since it's not THEIR job on the line! ;)

Thank you so much!

there are good examples of this online, just do a search and customize the wording for your situation. Good luck!

Yes, check out "What Color is Your Parachute?" for amazing lists of verbs to describe what you did, and great lists of adverbs to describe how awesomely you did it! Good luck!

Check for on-line templates and verbs as suggested above. Start writing and put everything down with variations. Then start pruning. Stand back and admire. This shotgun approach usually works for me when I'm bogged down.

"Duties described in the job ad are part of my daily work routine. Proven competence, recent and ongoing experience," blah blah blah.

Thank you, everyone!

I am still working on it. I appreciate your help and good wishes, and will certainly let you know the outcome.

Fingers crossed!

Exactly, just write it all out as you normally would, just like you explained to us. Then research resume terms to help elaborate and explain your accomplishments at the current position. Let us know how it goes, especially if you get the position!!

Thanks! As it turned out, HR told me I just needed to send my application to the dean of the library, which I did. Then my boss asked me to come in for an "interview" w/him, his boss and the dean yesterday. It's very, very promising!

Now I am wondering if I ought to send three thank you notes. It feels a little silly since it's all very informal. What do you think? Just a line or two by email, I'm thinking.

Definitely send thank yous! Even if this doesn't work out for some reason, it will leave a good impression that you recognize and appreciate them giving you this chance.

GOOD LUCK! I hope this means not only a full time position for you, but possibly a whole new career that you find more suited to your personality and interests. I would so love to work in a library again (my first job was as a page...)

Thank you very much!

I did send three thank you notes so it's "wait and see" time!
