View Full Version : I wonder?
The meat bird thread started me thinking...if there any meats we can't eat? I mean, I know culturally there are meats we won't eat, cats, dogs, etc...but are there any meats that are harmful to us? There are good plants and harmful plants, so are there harmful meats? Maybe turtles? I don't know. I know snappers are used for soup, but tortoise? Maybe some snakes are not good? Any thoughts?
Yes well, I intentionally left out fish cause I know there are some that are not good for us. When we lived in Japan my daughter was obsessed with fugu, kept talking about it and thinking about it and was just thrilled when one of the Japanese 'going places and eating stuff' shows featured fugu. No, she never tried it. I couldn't afford it!:0!
Jellyfish? Maybe if you spread them on toast....hahaha.
Eating human meat is bad, because of the whole prion thing.
Eating the liver of some polar mammals can be a bad thing - too much vitamin A. Seals, polar bears, walrus, sled dogs, and so on. Probably best to avoid the livers of any big carnivores. Apparently our predecessors ran into this as well:

LOL! Just had a thought of people pushing their grocery carts through the local zoo =)
Yes, you can eat fugu. It simply needs to be properly cut before being served in it's usual raw form.
You can eat reptiles & amphibians. Of course with poisonous snakes, the poison sack needs
to be separated intact from the meat before eating.
I would have second thoughts on eating a Komodo Dragon though...
Habushyou (Habu Sake) is very popular in the Okinawa area which is a poisonous
snake in alcohol, like the worm in tequila. It still contains the poison and we've drunk it
down to the bottom with pieces of it's scales in the shot glasses. No problem.
I did stop the really drunk people from BBQing it to see how it tastes =P

I remember seeing that sake. Creeped me out. So did the little dried fish in the cracker snacks but my son liked them OK. Never did get used to squid-on-a-stick but boy did they smell good walking down the street. What part of japan do you live in? We were in Fussa just on the edge of Tokyo.
I never thought about the innards of animals but I could see why some parts, like the liver, would be not good considering their function. You never hear about anyone eating lions or tigers, but I know some eat house cats.
My sister was saying that in W. Virginia they eat groundhogs. I guess it would be like a rabbit. I wonder about vultures? Eww...!

I remember my mom saying we only eat meat from a vegetarian animal...pretty ironic I suppose. But mainstream Western countries we pretty much follow this-we eat cows, pigs, chickens, lamb, etc.

Haha, I remember my Grandad looking at a salad and telling Grandma that was what food ate. Times change, sometimes for the better.
