I need to open a credit account with a company that gives some kind of cash back reward. I've been wasting reward points for 20 years on "GM" points, a car that I will never, even buy. EVER. I don't even remember how I stumbled into this credit card but it is useless for me.

I want a no annual fee card that pays cash back. I currently have MAsterCharge but perhaps could get a Visa card. I don't really know the different between the two.

Suggestions?

Iris Lily, we have used Discover ever since they began and really appreciate the excellent customer service. Several years ago, hubby started an Amazon affinity card (VISA I think) and he gets good discounts for things we use like Barnes and Noble gift certs and Amazon purchases.

But my favorite is Discover (although not 100% accepted everywhere).

I also think that Discover has great customer service. We also have a Visa from Chase that gives cash back.

Sorry, I won't go to Discover because too many places don't accept it. DH has a Discover card which he always tries to use first.

http://www.mrmoneymustache.com/ has a rundown on cards he recommends. He's the one folks on here recommend for his early retirement advice. Basically, he is playing around to see what is out there. Part of his criteria is what do they pay as an affiliate fee, but he seems to be upfront on the benefits of the cards as well.

When I get back to the States again, which will hopefully happen at the intersection of debt payoff and credit rating restoration, I will be looking for a good credit card as well. At one time I wanted a Southwest card as I like to fly and I would have used the free ticket that the yearly fee gets you. Now, I don't know if I'd use it, and can't anyway right now. So, I keep wondering what business I use enough to want the points. The REI card maybe, but I already have the camping gear I need. So, best of luck and let me know what you find.

Discover is my choice, and I have hardly ever run into a place that won't accept it, even I do in my tiny art business! I carry a Visa for those places that don't, and end up using it only 2-3 times a year. I love the extra cashbacks Discover features every few months, currently it is on gas purchases, and since I drive a lot in the summer I welcome that extra bonus.

I use a Capital One Mastercard as one of my cards because they have a decent cash back rate and also do not charge foreign exchange/transaction fees. But they don't give you a very high credit limit. So I have a Visa through my credit union, and get points with that (which can be redeemed for gift cards from target, barnes and noble, starbucks, etc.). I also have an AmEx blue which offers cash back, but the rate sucks unless you use it a lot.

We get anywhere from $100-200 back a year typically, depends on how expensive our international flights home to visit family are, as that represents the majority of our credit card spending.

I recommend the Chase Freedom card. It's a Visa - Tons of bonus points and because Chase is also my bank I can easily transfer payments like I would from a checking to a savings account. I pay off my balance once a week. I like their app as well. I can transfer money to my credit card via my phone.

I use Discover. Rarely am I not able to use it. Have a VISA card for those days, where I rack up points I don't use.

Fidelity has a 2% back American Express card we are thinking of getting. However, I just realized Visa has been bumping up our credit line without us realizing it. So we called to have that credit line lowered before we apply for any new cards. Now I think I need to wait until the next statement hits the credit bureaus until we should apply for the Fidelity card. Right now I have an Amazon card - 1% back most places and 4% back at Amazon.

Some people play the credit card games where they use one card to get 5% back on groceries (plus they buy gift cards at the grocery store to basically get 5% ack everywhere), another card for 5% gas, etc. They have an ongoing thread at fatwallet on all the latest deals and signon points.

For overall rewards, 2% cash back is the highest amount I know about right now.
