Hahahaha! I saw this list of old 1970s Weight Watchers recipe cards today and almost died laughing. Check out the Fluffy Mackerel Pudding and the Frankfurter Spectacular.

Thanks Peggy! The weird forum censor edited out the t-w-a-t in weigh****chers. Let's see if this works.

Oh, Stella! I think the calorie-saving part came when you looked at it before you tried to eat it....

Also in that vein ... James Lileks (familiar to us Twin Cities members) on old cookbooks: http://www.lileks.com/institute/gallery/index.html

Ooh, how nasty!
Interesting that they all look really low carb, though.

mmm...jellied tomato refresher! Second only to snacks on a stick!
Is it just me or does a lot of these look like they just dumped a bunch of ketchup on stuff? The roast chicken looked like it was positively slathered in it!

Nothin' says party like tossing back a couple slender quenchers along with your Caucasian Shashlik! Fluffy mackerel pudding? Snappy mackerel casserole? Mackerelly? Finally (!) a way to use up all that mackerel hiding in my freezer!!! I had forgotten how totally weird the 70s were.

LOL. I noticed the over use of ketchup and mackerel too. <<<That is at the very least the weirdest sentance I have written this week.
