I just wanted to share my good news with everyone. After being out of work for close to TWO YEARS, I finally got a job! I have been hired as a member of the "international faculty" for an Indian company that does online English training. I can't say that it's exactly English as a Foreign Language, since English is the defacto lingua franca of India, but the way many Indians speak English just doesn't cut it when speaking to other English speakers. (Call center in Delhi, anyone?)
I start training next week. I originally applied for a job as an English teacher with them, and got to the interview stage. At that point, I was told that my hourly rate would be 110 rupees an hour. A quick Google search while I was talking to the HR guy on Skype revealed that it was the whopping wage of USD $1.98 an hour! I made polite noises about that wage not being viable here in Israel, due to currency conversions and the cost of living, and thanked him for his time. He then countered with the possibility of the "international faculty" position, and I eventually had an interview with the CEO, who used to be a major Hewlett-Packard honcho for their Indian operations. He agreed with my position, and bumped my salary up to $10 an hour. That doesn't sound like much, but in Israel it's a pretty decent wage and is very livable. It's more than Berlitz pays, for example, and is even more than my DH is making in the new job HE got last week. So within one week, we've both been hired, in fields we love and are good at. Hooray!
