View Full Version : The International Space Station (ISS) in the night sky

I heard on the local news that the ISS could be seen in the sky around 9:30 last night. So DH and I went out in the dark in our field in the golf cart to see if we could see it. We did! Just a light moving quietly across the night sky from NW to SE. Unfortunately, it disappeared into the lights from the city that's 25 miles from here. I would be really sad if development took all our night sky away. And the drought allowed us to sit unbitten from mosquitoes while waiting for the ISS. It was really nice.
But after it was over, I thought to myself "why did I get so excited to see it, when I don't like man cluttering up the natural night sky???" I guess I just like finding things up there in the dark. :~)
I used my binoculars, trying to see if I could see them waving back at me, but I couldn't ........ ;)
Anyone else see it floating by?

Go to www.NASA.gov/missions and you can put in your location and find the dates and times that it will be visible overhead. It's orbit isn't always overhead, nor does the ISS always catch the sun's rays and become visible, but the chart will let you know when to go out and look.

Thanks Tweety. When I was looking for the time online, I realized how many times it actually orbits the earth. I forget the number, but its alot! I guess the local weather people let us know when its going to be most visible. (that's how I heard about it). But that chart is a really good thing, if we're not sure when its best to watch for it.
Thanks!

LOL, See something up in the night sky (that isn't a helicopter or plane)? Between the street light, the house lights, the towers that have lights on them, etc. etc. etc. I can go out on my front porch and read a book just from the purple night sky. (what is a black sky?)

Been that way for years.

Heck, I can read here some nights from the light of the Milky Way.

I saw something that looked like a very slow, non-blinking plane but I can't be sure that was it or a satellite. Neat you saw it though!

Rosie.......It seemed to me to be a little bigger than a satellite.

That's how it was at our previous house (8000 ft. elevation a long way from any major light pollution). My brother's partner is from Manila. The first time he came to our house we were sitting outside at night and he asked what that all was up there in the sky. When I told him it was the Milky Way he didn't believe me. It was pretty funny.

One early evening (springtime), we watched it coast across the sky. The sun was already down for a time, yet was reflecting brightly from the station.
