View Full Version : Few nature pics from my yard

The first is of a red squirrel at a bird bath outside my kitchen window. Those guys are sooooo hyperactive!

The second one is of a couple deer that were drinking some water out of the kids' old sandbox. I put it out and filled it with water during the drought. Have you ever seen fawn's jump around? They are so spastic.......and cute! This one was jumping backwards, like the moon walk, and it was so funny.

The third is a pic of a tiger swallowtail caterpillar. They are usually green, but turn dark when they are about ready to pupate. They turn into beautiful butterflies.
I love living in the country!!

Those aren't real eyes on the caterpillar. They are fake ones to scare predators off. Aren't they cool? And when you scare it, it sends up orange horns that give off a bad odor. Ain't nature grand?

Really nice that you get to live out in the country and to see these things. That was sweet of you to supply water for the animals during the drought. Thanks for sharing...

Great pix, especially that last one. I haven't seen lots of deer in my little corner of heaven, but I do spot one occasionally. I have a picture shot through tree branches where you can almost see one of a family of three that ambled past my house one day. Squirrels, raccoons, and an occasional cat pick their way along the fence outside my window. And the other day, on the way home from the library, I looked up to see a gull and a crow escorting a bald eagle away from the lake like a pair of scrambled fighter jets.

I have more swallowtails than monarchs but don't think I've ever seen a caterpillar to one.
