View Full Version : Yikes - a $60 haircut
I have been letting my hair grow out and trying to avoid another salon visit for a while. However...it was really looking bad so I booked an appointment nearby based on yelp recommendations.
The stylist did a wonderful job and clearly knows what he is doing but I wasn't expecting a $60 tab for a simple 20 minute haircut. I am used to my $15 Super Cuts price. Time will tell if it is worth that much more.I feel guilty spending that much...

I always feel I will spend a good amount of money on my hair, although I am frugal about other things. A good haircut will look good while it's growing out and for people like me, a good haircut makes me look better! :)
pinkytoe - it's a done deal, don't let the guilt get to you....just enjoy having a great haircut! Çhalk it up to one of those life lessons - next time you'll think to ask the cost ahead of time...but who knows, maybe you'll like it so much that you'll spend that amount again!
Your next trim could be done at a cheaper place; just have them follow the "lines" of your current haircut. When it starts to get out of shape, save up and go back for another pricey one. I've found that good haircuts hold their shape and look much better while growing out.

I used to go to the budget salons, until a stylist wrecked my hair (a week before a new job) because she didn't understand clearly what I wanted. I had to go to a more expensive place to get it fixed, and it made such a difference to my thick curly hair that now I just budget for the more expensive cuts. And it does grow out much better...I do not spend a lot on clothes or makeup but a good haircut is worth the life energy to me. Now my friend who has perfectly straight, long hair that just needs the split ends trimmed goes to the chains and it works just fine for her.
i once went in to an upscale place in beverly hills and got a $60 haircut.
i hated it.
i went back to the 15 place and liked it much better. i think it is because the 60 dollar place was not keen on buzzing, which i love on my sides and back. hehe
Get some great pictures of your freshly done hair cut to bring to the budget salon or a less expensive one to replicate.
Some things are worth spending money on and if the cut is great, enjoy it!
I get annoyed at those places that don't post the prices anywhere. They don't have to be on a giant sign as you walk in, but maybe posted on a wall or something? Hair salons (not the cheapo places) seem to be particularly bad about that. It's a good idea to ask when you make your appointment just in case.
I've been to expensive salons before. The haircuts are fine (not four times better though). The problem I have is I can never replicate they way stylist blowdry and style my hair at home.
It is OK to get a great cut once in a while :) what is the point of saving money if you cannot enjoy spending some of it!
Guilty, but unashamed! I found a stylist who was able to reconcile what I like (short, layered) with what my hair will actually do (weird flippy stuff), and have gone to her ever since. It averages to less than $2 a day, and I'm willing to pay that for the convenience and hair that actually looks good.
I spent $148 (with tip) on my haircut and highlight 2 weeks ago. But I hadn't had my hair TOUCHED in 5 months and it looked like crap and I got a full (rather than partial) highlight and I think they used 3 colors.
Usually I don't get a full highlight. Next time I'm going bleach only (no color) so it will be cheaper again (something under $100.)
I agree with the other posters. Your hair should look good and while there are some people who just have good hair who can look great with a $12. cut and no color, some people (myself included) have to spend more money on the one thing about our appearance that makes the most difference in how we look.
I say spend what you have to spend and don't worry about it.
The last time I went to a hairdresse was in September 2009 and it was awfull. Because my hair was pretty long I had to stand the whole time!
Well now my hair is down to my butt and I cut it myself, or my DH is helping me, he can cut a straight line. :) Last cut was in February.
With hair that long, I never have a bad hair day anymore! Really, its great. I also found a better shampoo which is pretty cheap and my hair loves it, no spliss.
I really found my simple living for my hair and I am happy with it! :D

For me, I think a $60 haircut would be a bit much. But if it was the only way I could get a haircut I liked then I would have to bite the bullet and do it. But fortunately I am one of those people who is happy with long hair and wispy bangs. I usually just trim it myself or ask BayouBoy to hack away at it if it gets too long. For me, I'm just not very comfortable with strangers all up in my hair. All of my life, my uncle who was a hairdresser cut my hair. He died when I was 24 and since then, I have always cut my own hair because being in a salon without him there just doesn't feel right.
A month later...and I still have mixed feelings about the $60 haircut. I think with time the stylist would have been one to stay with but $60 every 5-6 weeks is not in my budget. On a lark, I went back to a stylist yesterday that I had seen several years back. I am hopeful that if I stay with her and work out any issues over time, she will be a keeper at $35 plus tip. I have found that communication skills are as important as technical skills when it comes to getting your hair cut.

I'm with Taffy on this one - I haven't hada haircut in several years, though I do have dd trim the ends occasionally. I wouldn't mind paying $60 for a haircut that made me look great, but I wouldn't do it every 6 weeks - that adds up pretty quickly.
