If you want to see how they "stand" why wouldn't you go directly to their own site? Of COURSE those sites are biased toward the candidates but it gives you the candidates' own crafted positions.
While I (probably like you) may not find that entirely satisfactory, I think it's the place to start. It's the source material on each candidate. From there you can read commentary on candidates.

A paper from the future. Their views or "stands" tend to change, and are certainly incomplete or partial truths.

Past voting records provide some useful information though. A cynical part of me thinks: don't look at stands, look at where their money is coming from, but while that contains some truth it's a bit too cynical (for one thing on a state or local level money isn't so all encompassing yet). Look at their stands, their past voting records, and where their money is coming from (if you can even find that out).

agreed. Past performance is the best tell to what they would actually do in the future. As the saying goes, actions speak louder than words.

Agreed. Where the money comes from won't tell you anything because almost all the big donors swing both ways. Gotta keep a horse in the race, you know.
bunnys, thanks I even put the app on my phone for when my mom hits me with one of the whoppers she heard somewhere, I can fact check it.
Who is checking the fact checkers?
On one of those two sites a "fact" put out by the GOP candidates was revealed to be a lie. The GOP said that they were going to overturn the legislation popularly known as Obamacare. THEY DIDN'T DO IT! Those dirty liars.
Here's what really happened, and according to the fact checking site that caught the GOP in a "lie:" The GOP controlled House voted to overturn Obamacare but the Democratic controlled Senate put a stop to that.
This is a "lie?" Ok, whatever. If I say I'm going to Washington DC to do something, and I vote in accordance with my promise--if that is a "lie" then these pants-on-fire sites need oversite of their own.
I commend anyone such as the OP for trying to suss out fact from fiction in these political times, but there are no completely unbiased sites.

Disclaimer: Fact checker sites can be wrong.
You're right the fact checkers have been wrong on both sides. But I think that, generally, they are pretty good. Just take what they say with a skeptical attitude, which I hope everyone does with everything in their lives.
CTG492--hope it helps.
It's really much simpler if you stick to the belief that nothing coming from Washington is a fact; its all lies. The trick with being politically savvy is that you have to set the bar low enough or you will drive yourself crazy.
